“The only person who’s never had Steven is Steven!” This is so true and heartbreaking because Steven had to fight tons of aliens who wanted to kill him and his friends for something that wasn’t his fault, something that he had nothing to do with. He has very few friends and as seen in “Bismuth Casual”, he doesn’t know how to make connections with kids his age. He grew up in a van and never got an education or went to the doctor before “Growing Pains”. He always has to be strong for everyone else and pick others up when they fall apart. And because he’s so focused on helping others, he doesn’t know how to take care of himself and doesn’t want to make other people worried about him, and he doesn’t want them to see the darkest parts of himself. Steven has an INCREDIBLE amount of trauma. He’s a prime example of how someone’s life can fall apart by neglecting to take care of themselves and not opening up to other people

To me, the tightest part of this conclusion is that what it took for Steven to start healing was his finally crying for himself. The "healing kiss" from Connie was a catalist, but it was Steven's tears falling in the ocean with the other diamonds' that did the magic part. It's consistent with how the other corrupted gems were healed by the combined efforts of all four diamonds, while also being just spot on, in terms of what he needed. He needed to be cried for, but he also needed to cry for himself.

@scionofshadow Жыл бұрын
I think the issue with his emotions bubbling up until his breakdown is that he needed to be actually listened since the beginning. Everytime he was confronted in this season, whoever was talking to him, enemy or friend, was talking in a way that sounded like "you are feeling this, so you must do this, period". Nobody actually tried to see what was the state of his perspective of things, they were just assuming things by their own perception and trying what worked for them, hoping that it would just work for him, just like Connie perfectly wrapped up in the 19th episode.
@Rabbitibi Жыл бұрын
Idk about that. While the main gems did give advice at first, they also did try to get him to talk to them about what was going on multiple times when they realized how serious it was
@gothicMCRgirl Жыл бұрын
That’s kind of doing a disservice to the characters, though. They were constantly asking Steven what was going on, and it was STEVEN who kept brushing them off and insisting he was okay. The gems just didn’t want to impose and were just respecting his feelings. Part of this ending series was not only about Steven confronting the trauma he suffered, but also about him accepting that he NEEDS help sometimes, too. That he doesn’t always have all the answers, because he’s used to having all the answers. He was the emotional center of the gems, but once the gems became truly responsible for themselves, Steven was left adrift, suddenly with no purpose. And that’s no one else’s fault.

The reason there's such toxicity in the Steven Universe fandom is because while a lot of people got the actual message this show was trying to portray, media like kids shows tend to attract holier than thou, self-righteous people who use the good messages of the show as sort of a "Good person competition", plus a lot of younger fans can get worked up and toxic online. One thing I really liked about the finale that doesn't get talked about much is that while the plot is somewhat simple and cliche, it actually tells us a lot about the progress Steven has made by the end of Future. One of Steven's biggest issues throughout Future was his unwillingness to tell his loved ones how he was really feeling. He hid his unflattering thoughts and worries from them. And at first, he does the same in the finale. Steven tells the Gems he's leaving and when he doesn't get the response he expected, he is disappointed. But he doesn't share with the Gems that it's bothering him. Instead, he talks to Greg about it. He even asks Greg if his feelings are petty (which also shows us that Steven and Greg's relationship is now strong enough that Steven can share these kinds of thoughts with him). And if you really think about it, this is exactly the kind of scenario where the old Steven would have kept his thoughts to himself, both to spare the Gems any extra sadness and because they are unflattering. But at the end of the episode, instead of swallowing his feelings like he's done throughout the show, Steven turns back and tells the Gems the truth. He shows them a petty, unflattering side of himself in order to be honest with them about what he's really feeling. That's something he would not have done prior to Future. And for that act of vulnerability, Steven is rewarded with an honest, supportive, fulfilling goodbye from the Gems. I'm always impressed by how this seemingly cookie-cutter finale was used to tell us very specific things about Steven's progress with his issues. We get to see with our own eyes that he is getting better at telling his family about what's bothering him. We get to see that he is in a better place now than at the start of Future. And we get to see that Steven is truly on the road to recovery, although the journey isn't over yet. What an amazing show this was.

This scene @5:33 is actually VERY dark! Turns out he hadn't fully forgave the Diamond's for what they did. So when Steven took over White Diamond's body he wanted to ram her head into that pillar so hard that it would've shattered her gem, basically killing her! Also kinda a missed opportunity not to update Spinel design of removing her black tear marks and turning her heart gem right side up to show that she's actually feeling better now. Also also also I remember many people was kinda upset when it was revealed that the big pink monster was just Steven because it was teasted Heavily throughout the intro like they was gonna face a new big bad! Also the ending was very sad. And I liked how they did a reprise of the first Ever song that they did in the series! Also @37:14 actually luckily they was airing 2 episodes for a week in November. First, the colonization of planets was terminated and the existing colonies were liberated, only for the Diamonds stepped down as absolute rulers of Homeworld to let the gems choose their own leaders and to focus on helping gems in the best way they can: Yellow uses her power over form to undo all the forced fusions and to give each gem the form they want; Blue uses her power over emotion to make gems feel better and recover emotionally; and White uses her mental powers to allow other gems to control her so they can see themselves for what they are through her.

I like how each of the Diamonds get a new power that works opposite to her original power as they overcome their toxic traits. Pink Diamond, from what we can see, had a lot of anger issues, and therefore her powers were very destructive, a scream that could crack walls and all. It is possible that since she was in so much pain from being mistreated by the other Diamonds, her powers reflected that and helped her cause the pain she wanted to inflict others as retribution. As she overcame her immaturity and anger and became more like her Rose Quartz persona, she left her destructive powers behind (to the point our Pearl wasn't even aware she had them) and instead gained healing powers. Yellow Diamond also has anger issues and is very emotionally unstable, and therefore her power is to destabilize any gem's physical forms. As she got over her repressive, unstable and irate nature, her powers changed, and now she's able to stabilize any gem's forms, being able to permanently alter them, which is basically unheard of for gems (they can shapeshift, but never forever, and if they take a new form after poofing, there are limits to how much they can change). Blue Diamond was constantly very sad and depressed, and she wanted to make other gems just as miserable as her. Therefore, she had the power to make gems cry, emotionally disabling them even during battles except for the most strong willed gems. This probably got even worse after Pink's "shattering". But as Blue got over her need to make other people miserable, her powers also changed and now she can make people happy. As for White, she was very perfectionist and had an insane need for always being right and always being in control, and therefore she had the power to mind control other gems, puppeteering them. But as she let go of her need for control and understood that she doesn't need to know everything and be right about everything, her powers changed, and now, as Spinel puts it, they work in reverse, and she's able to make other people control her and project their thoughts onto her, which gives her a new way to understand others. Pink = Wanted to hurt people, now wants to heal people Yellow = Wanted to destabilize people, now wants to stabilize them and fix the damage she did Blue = Wanted to make everyone miserable, now wants to make everyone happy White = Wanted to control everyone, now wants to understand everyone

The gems and family freaking out with steven while knowing the truth is so real. People sometimes don't know how to react to this breakdowns. And Steven being stronger than the cluster is just like how people suddenly become hella strong and not even 5 or more people are enough during those moments. Even in my city 15 yo kids are to much for almost 7 adults holding them.

A lot of people didn't like It the finale because It was "Rush" and because they wanted a big great fight. But I think It was perfect for what the show is in Essence. As a person who struggle with depression I find the finale very beautiful and warming! People think everything resolver with the power of love and that was unrealistic, but they didn't seen It through. Not everything resolver with love but It does help, Steven mentions he seeing a therapist and he Is working on his emocional problems! But the great big hug they all give him It help him to acknowledge his problem and recive the help he needed. I love Steven Universe so much, this show accompanied me during my adolescence, It help when I was confused about my sexuallity, acept It and gelp me to grown up. And when I was struggling with my depression It help me to acept the fact I needed help too. I'm so glad you enjoyed the show as much as I did and a love seeing all your reactions, Peridot Is my fave too she Is the goat! Btw, you should watch the little sketch or courts of Steven,they very nice and funny ! Steven trying to be youtuber! You would love them!

I actually thoroughly enjoyed Future a lot more because you guys did. I previously thought it was just good, but these have elevated it to great! And maybe that's due to seeing it much more closely off of rewatching the original series, and seeing it as one complete story. I'd love to see you guys finish DuckTales! It's my favorite show after Avatar and Korra and you have one more Season to go!

Yup. I was a SU Future hater. But these dudes just changed my mind. SU Future is different from the classic one, but that doesn't mean it is bad. After rewatching by their reactions, i can understand this now.

Steven Universe is my favorite series. It was emotional to rewatch parts of the show and see your reactions. Last time I saw some similar reactions was when I showed the series to a friend I lost to covid. Thank you for the ride, guys. And I hope you guys watch Frieren!

I think a big part of the tone shift comes with how future follows in the same trend that Adventure Time and Avatar did in maturing the show with it's audience. Steven Universe premiered in 2013 and Future ended in 2020 so a lot of fans grew up with the show. It definitely provides great closure and catharsis for the stakes to be raised and tone to shift in that way over time, but I can definitely understand how for someome binging it all together it almost gives you emotional whiplash.

I'm really grateful for you guys watching this series. I went through my early twenties with it, and it was a huge deal for my girlfriend and I (our engagement rings have a ruby and a sapphire). The negativity around the show's ending soured it for me pretty badly, and I viewed it as something important, and game changing, but not all that good. Watching you all become so earnestly invested in this show feels like it's melted the ice around my memories of it. It was so good, and tried so hard, and was so beautifully, brutally sincere. It was wonderful all along and I'm so lucky I got a second chance to see that. I loved hearing you make predictions that I remember making myself, and your tangents always make me laugh. This series has been something I looked forward to every week, even as I've been going through some rough times lately. From the bottom of my heart: thank you, thank you, thank you.

Oh man lemme tell ya-Watching CN from elementary school when Steven Universe was a new show getting shoutouts from Uncle Grandpa, to seeing it become its own beautiful series that grew up /with/ us- ending with a grown up Steven making his own way in the world- I mean shit it hit hard. I graduated two months ago, and seeing all my childhood shows move on and encouraging us to do the same, I’m practically always bawling my eyes out.

It is tremendously difficult especially in this day and age to find a show, an animated show at that, that can genuinely make you feel EVERYTHING and be at peace yet left with longing at the end. Any continuation from now would def be best as a YA or more Adult Swim kind of turn from here out seeing as the biggest theme of Stevens story is Change. We’d likely come back to a young adult Steven probably doing something similar to Space Dandy/Rick & Morty type things …(At least that’s what I would find to be the best scenario)

And that... concludes Steven Universe. It was an amazing time to experience the whole thing with everyone, for literal YEARS, and say goodbye to our childhood hero, inspiration, and comfort, Steven. I'm so glad you guys watched, laughed, and cried tears of both sadness and joy at the end there. Steven Universe really is something special.

Hear me out, Steven Universe but it's in the style of the TV show Monk. Start of an episode visit the therapist, end of the episode visit the same therapist. Dealing with difficult life problems that Steven is encountering.

Sincerely enjoyed this reaction series. After so many years of people trashing this series just because of the fanbase or their own perception of the show based on the earlier seasons, it feels good to know that there are still people out there who can watch the whole series and see what a gem it is in spite of its flaws (no pun intended.)

your commentary and reactions throughout all of steven universe have got to be my favorite, of course there was some stuff i didn't agree with (pearl and rosepink defender XD) but it was consistently great and something to look forward to every friday. you guys always have something interesting or deeply insightful to say, and the rare moments where you managed to predict stuff that ended up happening was always amusing. so sorry to hear fans can't be normal even after all these years but i'm so happy it didn't deter you from continuing the series and enjoying it. thanks so much guys, i'll miss these videos. have a good one

I love "Being Human" so much. One of my top Steven Universe songs because it's a song about and for him in an emotional seriousness that's usually reserved for the gems. Obviously there's the whole thing about grieving for yourself and all that's happened, but the song is subtler form of that. It's a song about healing for yourself too.

No matter how many times I watch this show and get to the end, it always gets me. Steven universe ended right as I was leaving for college and it hit so close to home. What an emotional and brilliant ending to what I initially believed to be not a remarkable show but goddamn was I wrong. I'd definitely rank Steven Universe + Future in the same category as Adventure Time, Ben 10, Regular Show, etc.
@geekyjulia6053 Жыл бұрын
I love how Future ended things, there are so many series with child characters who goes through something scary or traumatizing yet it doesn't really stick to the character like with Steven. Steven might be half gem, but he's the most human character i've ever seen in cartoons. It's not solely seen on Future either, when they went to save Greg from space and the gems got poofed from the space ship warping, he was all alone crying for his dad.

What i loved about steven universe as a kid that grew up watching it was the timing and the inclusion of future. Im 22 years old now but the original steven universe premiered when i was around 10/11 years old in 2013 and then ended with Future in 2019 (making me around 16/17 when it came out) and it was so impactful to have a show that everyone my age could project and relate to. Having Steven go from a cheerful kid to a teenager that struggled with his family relationships/ not bottling things up/ and seeking/refusing help at his lowest low at the same time I was was so freeing because at that age you feel like you have to keep up an image to make everyone around you happy even though you're growing up and dealing with the anger and sadness of what you thought were little things in your childhood now coming back to get you. I know those who aren't LGBTQ supporters hate the show but it did normalize queer people in general, and mommy issues, as well as a slew of tons of problems someone has growing up. Steven Universe was such a human show despite only having the humans play second to the gems and I am so grateful that I was able to experience it when I did.

This is the kind of stuff I live for. Steven Universe was something else when I was a kid. Believe me there were plenty of other amazing shows on at the time, but this one was different. This show had smooth animation you couldn't help but get a warm feeling from, and a character who was everything I needed. Steven was a positive character in my life, because I grew up in a home with parents who were miserable in their lives, and only continued to live for the sake of me and my brothers. The constant empty broken feeling my house gave off was often too much to bear, and sometimes I just wanted to curl up and die on the floor to make it stop. But then this show came along and gave a positive spin on things I really needed. It was my escape from life. As an autistic person Peridot was, and continues to be the greatest representation of autism ever made, and still my favorite animated character. This show is my argument for the 2010s being the golden age of animated television, and I"m proud and thankful to have grown up with such amazing programming as this. Thank you for reacting to one of the best parts of my childhood.
