Without a doubt, Soundgarden are true pioneers of the whole Seattle rock sound. Thayil's guitars produce a thick wall of sonic sludge that can't be escaped nor denied. This was the birth of grunge!

I've had this song stuck in my head for about a year and I had no idea what the name was - its that damn catchy. Just the chorus. I was starting to wonder if I imagined the song xD. Glad I re-found this video on here! Thanks for posting it : )

Dude, I remember that movie, it was awesome. Beautiful house in SF. Brought me back memorires of when I was there. I totally forgot about this song playing. Good observation. Who knew that this obscure song would be one of the harbingers for the coming wave of Grunge. Very cool dude.

Man, this takes me back. I saw Soundgarden in a tiny, packed club on their 1989 tour. They fillled the middle slot on a bill with Voivod headlining and Faith No More opening.Odd mix of a late 80's metalhead and punk crowd. Fucking awesome show.

Far and away my FAVORITE Soundgarden tune, and one of the best of the entire 90's era! Don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but this came out not too long after Exxon Valdez...which begs the question...Who's going to update this video with footage of the BP disaster?!?!

Ive met Chris a couple times(I lived i West Seattle for years) pretty cool guy. Once we were both buying beer @ Charlestown 7-11 at2am(last call till 6) must've been late 90's, so he was at the heighth, and dude was still down to earth enough to laugh with me about making it JUST before 2

i agree. I'm not too fond of his new music but he didn't sell out he just wanted to do something different musically. You have to realize that Soundgarden formed in the 80's so Chris has been singing rock n roll for a while now. If he wants to do something different than more power to him!

I have seen many bands live Tool, Slayer in the 80's, Danzig, Slipknot, Metallica also in the 80's, Primus, AC\DC, Meshuggah, Ministry, and many more, and for Soundgarden being one of my favorite bands " old stuff " I regret never seeing them. I hope these guys get back together. They put together some great tunes. I'm sorry but anything Chris has done since sucks! I quit listening to Rage after he started singing for them. He can only redeem himself by rejoining Soundgarden.

And both songs owe a lot to the second major riff in Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" from 1970 ... and probably to a few other songs from that late 60s/early 70s period that Seattle bands from this era drew on so much.

Grunge wasn't a media term. It was coined by Mark Arm of Mudhoney. It's a genuine critical category as it defines an organic movement in music that reflects a definitive sound and culture. Just like Blues, Jazz and Rap does. I think that it's perhaps the last organic musical genre. It's all post-modern now as movements and genres are all intertwined and very little culture comes from the ground up these days. It's all top down.

What does Kim Thayil know?! The video's aesthetic personified grunge. Kept in it's context, which is a backdrop of hair rock video's with people prancing about with make-up in close caption shots of bands on stage with symbolic parades of expensive car's and etc, this, with it's warehouse, fluid rythmic motion of band members and lights and symbolic representation of the lyrics i.e. a mother and the earth, you can see that it's a stark change. With that it became the prototype grunge video

Of course, being the great muse that he is, he also observes his limitations in that you can and will turn the meaning of the song into whatever you want to (like balls of clay). Just as long as you put your hand away. Philosophic enough for you?!
