SoundGarden is one of those bands that with RARELY exceptions ALL the members are top level musicians, just like the Beatles or PinkFloyd, where all the members were talented and multifaceted. The bassist (Ben Shepherd) is a monster, the drummer (Matt Cameron) is a killer, the guitarist (Kim Thayil) is breathtaking in the tuning and complexity of the riffs, and Cornell sings like a God of Olympus, as well as playing very well, it's a band that has everything in terms of music, composition, chords, sonority, it's like a classical music show where the Maestro is rock n roll.

In watching this, I take back every criticism of Cornell's voice I've had in the years since Euphoria Morning. When the dude gets it right, he really, really gets it right. To pull off an Ultramega OK track and have it sound so fresh, with vocals that, in my opinion, make the original pale in comparison, is wonderful; maturity, depth and a fuller sound than back in those days. He's still up there as having one the most outstanding voices of the last 30+ years, not to mention his, and the rest of the band's, outstanding songwriting to support the whole thing. Awesome.

This is a great song. I love how Kim Thayil is such a calm mellow player. He just lets his guitar play do all the talking. I never get sick of Beyond the Wheel. This is what happens when a really good band works on their craft, even while apart, and then comes back with a thoughtful interpretation of their older material, underlining the strength of the material and the power of their musicianship. Then, on top of that, Cornell comes in with a voice as clear as it had been in years, and improvises that high note at the end. They were at the peak of their power, and there was no telling what might have come next. Miss you, Chris.

This performance shows Soundgarden's supremacy, even after 20 years as a band they haven't become generic and in a way the masses have made them change their essence; they remain the same, obscure, quality intact, and have only improved year after year. They are untouchable in artistic terms, they are totally underrated since they became the greatest grunge band and one of the best rock bands that ever existed. Cornell with his potential vocals, matt on drums and kim on guitar are legendary when together.
