with Perry and Porl, the Cure had a sound back then that is hard to explain, but it was soooo good. now they have Reeves, which i think he looks lost half of the time he is playing and i dont think he is any where close to being the player like Perry or Porl.

For more than 20 years I've listened to this song, at the end of it I've always thought "It's a masterpiece! Can't get another conclussion!" . Bassline is gorgeous and this is one of the finest Perry Bamonte guitar work ever. The Cure has tried to play it live with master Reeves but no guitarist plays this song the amazing way Perry does
@IntegratingReelPerspecti-od7xhАй бұрын
Well at least now I have a name behind that GENIUS arabesque of evolving guitar solo thread work: Perry Bamonte. Now that explains why I don't see cover versions of this song on KZbin. That Perry was clearly one-of-a-kind and nobody could duplicate him.

@IntegratingReelPerspecti-od7xhАй бұрын
I feel like they intended this song to be a symphony consisting of a wall of guitar and keyboard textures. That's what makes this song so unique in the entire Cure catalogue. They really reached their peak with this song. 11+ minutes of a song that seems rather simple at its core (mainly due to Smith's acoustic strumming) but those TOWERING GUITAR SOLOS that evolve, stretch, bend and progress on top of that give this immense architecture that is just hypnotic. They could have virtually created an entire skyline with the sound they manifested in this piece of eternal beauty! An eternal sunset that is cast in an orange white haze glow.

Never saw The Cure Live but thought it may be shitty just like all the other bands. I couldn't be more wrong, fucking awesome mate this is better than the studio and the performance is 100/10. I was happy to see they played live it again a few years ago and that's great but frankly although Reeves' master musicianship it looks like Perry Bamonte provided a special superb touch to this song

This has replaced End as my favorite Cure journey into darkness. It is perhaps their most definitive song of that ilk, and is a veritable masterpiece. That said, it doesn't hold a candle to the finest moments from prog-rock, which are far superior, musically and technically. It's all about knowing what to expect. The Cure were an acquired taste for this classically trained musician, but there is no questioning the fact that the can scratch a particularly unique itch. This is music for a cold, dreary and rainy afternoon, with a warm dram and a smoke.

I think it partially had something to do with Robert firing Perry's brother who was managing the band. As much as I miss Perry, it was time for a change. Perry had been with the band for a long time, since like...1984 when he was Robert's guitar tech and roadie. The band seems to be in a good comfortable place with Reeves Gabrels over the last decade. Reeves just turned 65 last month, so I don't know how much longer he's willing to play concerts.
