Good job! I enjoyed this! I grew up in SW Portland at the edge of Beaverton in the Raleigh Hill neighborhood from 1983-2021 and loved the Southern Pacific

I could write comments all night about this, but that rail level camera shot at the 32-minute mark was what really stood out to me and needs it most for me.

I have no idea why UP took that line out south of Altura. Sad

After the merger, Union Pacific began routing eastbound lumber/forest products originating in the upper Willamette Valley via Portland-Nampa-Pocatello given manageable grades most of the way, as opposed to using the Modoc line, whose Klamath Falls to Wendel section has several steep grades, and the route had very little online business between Alturas and Flanigan. Even during the Espee era when the Pyramid Lake section from Flanigan to Fernley was abandoned in the early 1960s, Modoc traffic was directionally imbalanced, with the overwhelming majority of loaded miles being southbound (railroad east). As a result, the remaining southern portion of the Modoc line became expendable south of Alturas, once UP and SP operations were consolidated.

The Modoc line ended right about the same time that the Tennessee Pass line did. The Kansas Pacific rebuild changed a lot of the major routings that could only be achieved by a single ownership. This was a consideration by the now disbanded ICC years ago which prevented the Southern Pacific Santa Fe merger from taking place.

Can y'all maybe do a program with Texas railroads? I'm thinking MKT, Mopac and SP/T&NO. If anyone can find film of that it's y'all.

I really love railroading before graffiti became popular. Nor do I include on my model O and HO railroad. Cheers from eastern TN

Some neat model railroading ideas on the route. It would be interesting, and unusual, to see footage of action along Pyramid Lake before that section of line got embargoed.

It's unfortunate that the Union Pacific wasn't the road that was rejected by everyone else.
