Alot of people like me who came back post bot crisis and haven’t played a scream fortress in years are very easily overwhelmed with 2 dozen or so maps that i’ve never heard of. They should either do what CS has done at times and retire maps or atleast separate them by gamemode.

I think there’s should be two new orginization types: -By gamemode like you said -By year, it’d be cool to go back and experience each years batch individually (especially if you missed some)

200%. One-two zombie maps, the originals, crasher, perks, and monster bash, maybe maple ridge. These are pretty much the only ones I look forward to.

A vote to decide which map to remove and which to keep would definitely be appreciated. But a lot of the issues can be solved by subcategorizing most of the maps. Also let's access them all year around or so or maybe a day of the week. What's the point of so many maps we can only play at Halloween.

Honestly, there are a number of event-restricted maps that can be safely removed from circulation... Some shouldn't have made it into the pool in the first place, to be honest.

I think the issue then comes when people have spent money on map specific items like Strange filters and map stamps that they would then no longer be able to use. Even though I rarely see anyone actually using strange filters.

@@GeorgeWilkins Plus, who would get to choose and would they actually choose the underperforming maps, or just the maps they themselves don't like? The perpetual problem of some people liking the content, some hating it, and some being ambivalent to it all, with removing pissing some people off a lot while keeping not really affecting the ones who don't like the thing they can opt out of entirely as much.

I think there should be a split between the more classic style Halloween maps that are just slightly tweaked version of the original maps with hell and spells, and then the ones that just completely throw the game on it’s head like crasher and every single ZI map

Something ive been wondering for a while regarding TF2's current content bloat (which feels like its really just been Valve's obligation to give the community shiny new toys to make up for the crappy state the game just went through) will end. How many years do we think Valve'll be willing to keep up with the yearly update tradition? (Rhetorical question nobody knows) but it is something to think about i guess.

Bloated up the seasonal updates while packing them to the brim with content from the communities custom-made updates. Seriously though, they had Mayann Project, Journey to the East, Iron Gauntlet and Frontline all as full fledged community updates that they very easily could have put their stamp of approval on but haven't. Course Valve has internally gone through some significant shifts with TF2 as of recent so who knows what could happen in the future, not like they'd have to do much work.

@@SpaceGuyOnline I mean to be fair Mayann basically became Jungle Inferno, and Journey to the East was a mess. But yeah Iron Gauntlet and Frontline would've made for some fantastic updates and they just didn't do anything with them. I honestly think they're just traumatized by how badly all the previous community updates went (Robotic Boogaloo, End of the Line, Invasion)

I genuinely feel bad for the new players who will play on this Halloween for the first time, it must be overwhelming af. There are tons of maps with similar names, many weird gimmicks among those maps and weirdness of spells and pumpkins in general. if you want to experience all it could take like 100 hours

Map rotation would probably be the best, putting the main four maps in the mainstays but cycle between the maps from 2015-2023 would be the healthiest choice, alongside cosmetic crates just being dropped down to once a year and being what is essentially the summer content since Halloween and Smissmas cosmetics are beginning to be tapped dry, maybe a updated crate that features a collection to return.

I don't play TF2 for the super crazy whacky gamemodes. I just want the base TF2 casual experience. Nothing tops it.

You could genuinely remove the majority of scream fortress maps and nobody would care.If valve deleted like 60-70% of the scream fortress maps from the game and just added 1 or 2 really good ones…well lets just say I dont think people are gonna make an uproar that they cant play brimstone anymore.To be honest most people playing these maps just want free shit via the contractor.And once their contract is done they’re never gonna touch the map again.Its at the point the contractor feels like an actual contract like your getting paid to do something you dont want to.

They should rotate maps every year and cap the map pool at 10 or 12. Otherwise the player base is spread to thin and it becomes a slug to do contracts.

The maps we get are fun to play on, but it's so hard to enjoy when there are so many. You can only allocate so much time to playing TF2, and added more than 10 maps at once really divides up that time.

The answer is to bring back community driven events. The problem was that end of the line was the first one of these and was SO BAD it got the swamp themed event cancelled due to the PR backlash Valve had to handle in regards to the stuff that went down with the EotL devs. Invasion also had its flaws as a mostly community led event, but was overall good because Valve did do a little managing beyond the dead 0 they are used to doing. I think the solution would be to hire one guy to be the "TF2 Community Manager and Coordinator" to work with the community in organizing say, 1 or 2 Holiday sized themed or community updates a year around spring, or 2-3 "micro updates" about 3 times a year. This way non seasonal maps fitting for the standard map pool are actually encouraged to be made as well as general cosmetics instead of "1 update for year round stuff then 2 updates worth of workshop bloat." However Valve is very selective in hiring period and everyone who has enough understanding of Source and TF2 is already hired and even then are split between other Valve stuff with only the occasional TF2 seasonal approval and coordinating with any contractors like for the 64bit update. I unfortunately don't see a solution unless they pulled a CS2 and launched "TF Gravel Wars" just for the sake of having the game run on a system that a majority of devs or new hires can actually feasibly learn and manage.

You can blame the community for community events being dropped "One reason for this is far too often creators will get into a “private cool kids club” where they try to create a full update in private and attempt to cash it with Valve for 100% profit. There were a few updates like that, then the latest one (Invasion) caused public outrage drama that made Valve trash that system. Valve has no plans to ever accept any 100% community initiative efforts no matter how “good” it is. @@ryang996 yeah that's exactly the problem. Just look at how much EXTRA hate Zesty gets for simply calling out the "cosmetic syndicate" or even the mappers Space mentions in this video. Valve would need someone to work as a community manager to well, manage the community. Not only does Valve not want to hire someone to do that (with them seemingly not having a true PR team for anything), but that means managing, say it with me now, the TF2 community. Any greenlight from Valve for a community event would be 30 seconds of hype and wonder and joy followed by 6 months of infighting, drama, doxxing, and harassment over if 5cp should be included and how many year round furry cosmetics should be added until valve cans the event. Even "good" factions of the community have gone to shit when valve (and money) hit the table and I do want to in part blame the lack of stewardship Valve has.

If the menus were organized better I don't think it would be a problem. Who cares how many maps they add? It's not like other games where you're going to be forced to play on maps you don't like. In TF2 you can choose to queue into just 2fort for eternity if you wanted to. I think the menu problem is an easy fix as well. Instead of the holiday maps all being grouped up under a single submenu the Special Events tab should be treated like the Core Gamemodes and Misc Gamemodes tab. Clicking the Special Event button should bring up a list of gamemodes just like what happens with Core Gamemodes.

This problem was apparent last year too, being the first time that a good number of players couldn't finish their contracts in time. But when Zesty Jesus made a video about update bloat in Scream Fortress, so many people jumped on him with the counter "if you don't like it just don't interact with that content". As if that fixes anything??? Now we're gonna have over 60 maps if this pattern continues. The writing has been on the wall for some time and yet people get mad when you point out what it says.

I got tired of doing contracts cause all they do is give you halloween only cosmetics which really damper my spirits of SOME of the cosmetics looking great and barely feeling halloween specific.

I say organize the Halloween maps by gamemode with Halloween mixed in to prevent them blending in with normal maps, add permanent content mixed in with the regular stuff like with Smissmas, and maybe make more major modes/additions more year round by having normal variants, or just having modes like zombie infection get their own permanent category so they aren’t mixed in with barely played modes, also while they are at it tell the community to make normal variants of some Halloween maps to ensure their are more community events than just MVM, while also putting more of a spotlight on the underperforming modes so that new players will try them out so they can be better balanced. It’s not perfect but it helps add more permanent content without it getting swept away or just under performing once the season is over. One last thing I hope we get new contracts outside of scream fortress, maybe in the form of community events to help build hype and give out free rewards that aren’t exclusive to Halloween or smissmass. That way everyone can have a blast without needing to dump it all during 3/4 of the major seasons, also make the birthday event a week long so I don’t keep forgetting to log in to get the free stuff, I can’t tell you how much I’ve been dying to finally cosplay the one Demo that everyone says is the winglet, despite the fact that the joke is he almost always dies brutally.

They could do the formatting of Magic: The Gathering. That maps from the last 2-4 years are in the main rotation, and older maps go into a legacy category.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but OW actually does it better. Just reskin the regular maps for holiday events and have a few special maps/game modes you rotate instead of flooding the map pool with 60 maps. I haven't been playing TF2 since 2009 and it was pretty much unplayable for the last like 6 years. A lot of us in 2024 don't know these maps or what game mode they even are. I just stick to vanilla maps most of the time to avoid the frustration.

Does TF2 need an update though? For the most part, weapon balancing is in an ok space (Could be improved though), and the only thing that really needs fixing is Casual. The best Scream Fortress solution in my eyes is to simply cycle certain maps at random. so every SF, about 1/4 of the maps are are being used at one time, of course, the classic Valve ones will stay. as for regular TF2 updates, reuseing old crates from long ago would be nice, becuse a very large chunk of content (Stranges, warpaints, weapon Skins, etc) is either lost to time or very expensive. one day TF2 will receive the final update, and to be honset, that isn't bad. TF2 will last a very long time, even without updates. look at TFC, they have consistently full servers, despite being 25 years old. how? becuse the game is Good! TF2 & TFC are both good games with well balanced weapons and classes, the gameplay loop for every class is deep and satisfying. Quaility over Quantity.

I genuinely see no issue of removing at least 15 of the current SF maps, those being ICS maps (or maps that are just as low quality as ICS maps) and reskins that just take an already existing map/community map and shove SF garbage on it (like bloodwater, hassle castle, etc), and finally, and I know this is controversial, but the Zombie infection maps. If this were to happen (which won't sadly), Valve should also stop throwing 10 maps per update, the maximum should be 3, and this isn't just for SF, but also the other seasonal updates, and they should all be of the utmost quality Edit: let's not forget how our beloved casual matchmaking system makes it harder to find a decent match on the SF maps

I would move ZI into misc maps, but only if the gamemode was maintained at all cuz right now it's a pain. Because it has potential for being a fun gamemode and isn't all that offensive to the overall tf2 aesthetic. It's closer to VSH imo, then to something like prop hunt that someone tried to capitalise on during smissmass.

The "Misc Gamemodes" tab used to be reserved for one offs, but it now has multiple Saxton Hale and Player Destruction maps when they should have their own tabs now. There are more VSH maps then there are PASS Time maps, yet guess which one gets its own tab? Pretty much solely because the plant can't be bothered to do something that surely takes maybe a week at most to implement. Stuffing these maps into this category really hurts their chances of being played; Selbyen was a fan favorite map from Summer 2023 but it barely gets played nowadays because its stuck in the same boat as 2Fort Invasion and Hydro, despite Player Destruction being more than worthy of its own gamemode slot (its legitimately the best non core gamemode). Mannpower still gets pretty consistent lobbies and I think a big part of that is having its own section, so I would love to see VSH and PD get their own slots in the alternate gamemodes tab. (Honestly PD is almost worthy of being the 6th core gamemode but that will never happen under the current development cycle) In a perfect world, Zombie Infection would get one too, but that has to go thru the halloween sorting first, so its in a bit of a weird spot. Maybe there could be a separate toggle on the map selection screen that switches between whether your queuing for normal maps or halloween maps; like instead of Scream Fortress having its own tab, you get two sets of tabs, one being regular maps and the other being Scream Fortress. So you would still see the same options of Attack/Defend, CTF, 5CP, ect, but based on that toggle you would either see the normal maps or the halloween maps. This might make some of the misc maps suffer the same fate as existing maps relegated to the misc section, but I never queue for carnival of carnage anyways. You could even forgoe the "toggle" and make a seperate tab on the main menu next to Casual and Competitive. Scream Fortress has blossomed into a huge chunk of the TF2 experience, I think its more than worthy of being considered its own unique way to play the game. As for the cosmetics, I'm actually fine with the sheer number that get added, I think that player customization is the one place where you are allowed to go completely buck wild with inclusion. If I were in charge I would personally add like, over a hundred items from the workshop at the snap of my finger. Theres such a gigantic amount of quality cosmetics being made by the community, and there's a giant backlog of items created years ago that still hold up and deserve a chance to be ingame. Hell, even if I never buy them, having fun with all the cosmetics in Loadout.tf is more than worthwhile enough. Ended up yapping a lot more than I anticipated, would like to hear your thoughts on some of this. Been watching for a few years now, really enjoy your stuff.

I feel like one way to combat the contract issue is to limit contracts to only the new maps added to the Halloween pool, along with the usual official and well liked community maps.

I really noticed it last year. I played for 2 weeks and I got maybe half the contracts finished. With 50+ maps eventually it will be impossible to find a server because our player base will be spread too thin. I think they should cut the available maps in half. They could set up a rotation where they bring the retired maps back the next year and move out different ones.

Top 3 reasons to hate tf2 halloween: 1. The non pumpkin ones are slow grindy as hell contracts 2. Sudden death gamemode contract(it has a bug that resets your proguess) 3. People leaving the server making you unable to trigger damage on horseless headless man(boss contracts)

it's always too little too late for many in the community to finally realise and start addressing that there's still an ongoing issue with the game that isn't cheaters for once. This has been gradually happening since Jungle Inferno but I think it was only in the 2020's did it really start to get noticeable. But at least then you could still fully complete your Scream Fortress contracts. I do like the ideas a lot of this years maps present, but their timing couldn't be any more worse because now a lot of people are at a stage were maps are either their too gimmicky for a game that already now has too many gimmicky maps to keep track of, potentially could be rushed to meet deadlines and is then yet another broken mess on day 1, or feature some "monster of the week" that roams the maps and attacks players, which I think detracts from the uniqueness of the 30fps Skeletons and ghosts that the original Scream Fortress stuck too when it was Valve who were the ones developing the Halloween content. So on top of those we now have Scarecrows, Salmann, Mobster Skeletons, and now potentially Rat People. It's just becoming too much now.

I agree that maps should be sorted better for sure, or at least have the mode that they are tied to (cp, ctf, etc) i don't really agree with taking out maps but thats mostly because i get very easily bored of playing the same maps.

Another issue with all the bloat are the contracts. There are so many maps now where a lot of them don't really get played anymore to the point where you can't really work on certain contracts

The obvious answer is to let the people vote on quality and have the lower rated maps never return in the next season unless they get a major update and improved rating in the workshop

@@Sizzyl Problem with that is like the first 6 Scream Fortress's only have one map attached to them. Sorting them by gamemode is still the best I think, less confusion anyways unless you can recall what gamemodes Hellstone, Gravestone, Cobblestone, Brimstone all are

@@SpaceGuyOnline definitely not a bad idea to sort by gamemode, but can cause clutter elsewhere, but I guess that's also just a problem of them adding so many maps in general. maybe they could sort by gamemode in a halloween section? but then we're getting too many submenus. no real way of doing things well other than removing maps which is really hard to do once they're added (cuz someone is bound to love every map).

yeah this is the problem, I love halloween, I love scream fortress, but its getting a bit insane. Im even working on my own big map which I really hope can get in eventually but Im worried theyll just suddenly stop adding maps before its done. as it stands now though I think Id probably be happy with 4 good picks a year. this probably wouldnt be a problem in the first place if they hadnt added all the ics reDECORATIONS, as you can see a clear difference between a map that has just been redecorated into halloween theme, and maps that fully transform the map into something new even if it is still a reskin. I dont want the incredible maps to have to be stopped because of this mess

could have community vote on a small handful of maps to be featured for a week, either based on what they enjoy most or what contracts they'd like to focus on. Maybe tie it into a paid item so bots don't ruin it

One of the good solutions would be to simply EXTEND halloween time. Have it starting somewhere mid-september and ending mid-november.

I'd say you take maps out of the rotation after a few years when the usage doesn't exceed a certain treshhold. At worst, a handful of maps fall out that had a niche fan base. At best you only have the maps in rotation people actually play.

Holiday maps should be ordered by game mode, the less popular maps all around need to be taken out and put in a separate category. Maybe add a rotation "promoted maps" tab to help the rarely played have a chance.

So here are some solutions i came up with: 1) Valve needs to stop putting so much maps in every update. They should focus on quality instead of quantity. 2) Remove some of the wacky and niche maps 3) If removing maps isn't the case then create a map rotation every halloween. This Halloween you can play for example crasher but the next Halloween you can play ghost fort or whatever other maps.

Why not reintroduce event-specific crates eventually becoming unopenable after the event ends? They used to do that for halloween and christmas crates, among others, and it would probably help reduce the sheer number of hats and unusual effects running around that are either stylistically bankrupt, literally unusable for 11/12ths of the year, or both. The downside would be that these things would end up spiking in value after a while as they become limited in quantity, but that's the same thing that happened in the cosmetics from 2010-2014 and nobody's really complained that much.

I really like the halloween maps to be mixed because I like playing random game modes In regular casual you get the same 3 maps in each mode and here you get a ton to choose from, is not perfect but I rather it this way

People keep presenting new band-aid solutions to this problem when it's only a visual issue with the casual map selection. Valve could do several things but people will get mad regardless. I still believe in the pretence of reverting to old ad-hoc quickplay. You don't see the visual noise of this problem and everybody gets to vote on what they wanna play next as opposed to 3 maps only. Frankly the visual "noise" would only be when you vote on what map to change as if that's an issue presently in the default community server options.

This issue is that valve don’t update the game anymore. Scream fortress used to not be an update, it was just a few fun map reskins and a few unusual effects. Maybe a hat or two in the shop. The updates used to be weapons, high quality maps, fun events, balance changes like end of the line, invasion etc. Now the “update” is to just bloat tf2 out with more hats, effects and maps rather than real content

@@AKueh Except you quite literally can't play it since there's so much content that it causes the player base to be sporadically placed on the maps. If I want to play a certain map, I gotta wait 9 years to get into a game... just to have half the server leave it after a round because they finished their contract. Genuinely delusional if you think waiting upwards of 20 minutes to get into a game that only has 3 people in it is good

@@SpaceGuyOnlineidk what servers your on but if your doing contracts you can que like 3-4 maps at ounce its basically the same wait time as core casual and its fun cause you have a new map and game mode every 1-2 games. if you want a certain map it might take like 1-3 mins but i've had no issues getting into freaky fair consistently

Halloween needs divided up by modes. And the rest of the year there should be a seasonal rotation. Eight or ten always on maps, and then the rest divided up. So all the tropical maps, three months in summer. Winter maps, three months in winter. Maybe industrial in fall, and desert in spring?

I think the same should be implied to contracts. Instead of huge sub-categories with maps there should be just a handful of nodes to established gamemodes(A/D, KOTH, CTF, etc.) that would be accessible simultaneously after the entry contract. And they would not be restricted into specific maps beside "Event-limited [INSERT GAMEMODE] map". I would suggest the same thing to community ones like VSH and ZI... But I fear that can cause Workshoppers to bloat game even further with custom gamemodes which will get them away from idea to make a good map in first hand and not just a draft for their ambitions.
