I find adapting to Spain very easy more so than Portugal. My favorite cities are Seville and Salamanca. However, I want to get EU citizenship via Portugal which only takes five years and I’ve made a lot of progress in the Portuguese language. It wouldn’t hurt to get a little place in Spain since it’s very affordable.

As a Spaniard living in Orange County CA. and knowing my country well I will recommend Asturias (Northern Spain) for the summers (The wealthy Spaniards spend their summers there) and Malaga region (Torrox has the best weather of all Europe) for the winters

Here another spaniard , great channel , I also wanted to recommend that in summers you stay in the north of Spain ( regions like Galicia, Asturias , Cantabria, Basque country and Navarra )maybe two months July and August , because now due to climate change the summers are hotter in the south and Central Spain , so rental a house or apartment in the north is a good way to escape the heat , in winters the South ( Andalucia ) and East ( Valencia region ) are great with good wheather,so you have the north for summers and the south for winters Good content and channel and take care.

Thank you for featuring some southern Europe alternatives. We plan to take 3 months to explore Northern PT, Galicia, Asturias and Costa Blanca for a 2025 move. As mentioned above, increasingly like the idea of dividing our time seasonally and with needing to spend so much time in country due to residency rules, Spain offers a lot more geography ( and high speed rail) to explore.

I just saw your video and Malaga has been my first choice for the past year & a half. It’s getting more expensive & will continue for many reasons including climate, no wealth tax, climate/sun. It was just named the #1 place for expats in some publication. There has been a drought and a big concern in Andalusia. Still interested - I really liked while I was there. Portugal still an option though since I will be retiring abroad/not working. Thank you for this video.

Can you make choices any harder? We want to make 'THE MOVE' as soon as possible. #1 for me has always been Funchal. I am a 1 language speaker, my wife is muti. Her fear of Portugal was speaking Portuguese. We had heard as well witnessed the easy in Portugal. English spoken almost everywhere. I feel Portugal has a great future in growth. But we are in retirement stage of life and want it all now! If our finances will be almost the same in either, then Spain would be it. Housing is more abundant and newer builds. Málaga is very beautiful, but there is another side to this city and this southern coast in general. Just walking around as a tourist it's unlikely that you'll notice it, but this area is well-known in Spain as a location favoured by members of organised criminal gangs. It wouldn't necessarily be something to stop someone going there on holiday, or even to live there, but it's something to be aware of. The drinking water quality is very poor, so most people have to drink bottled water. This is often the case with water supplied via desalination plants, as opposed to hard rock filtered rain water sources found in the central plateau areas and northern regions of Spain. PS. I've lived and worked in Spain for over 10 years and I've travelled extensively in Spain and Portugal during this time.

Yes it´s true that this region is well know as the retirement place of some important gangs, like russians and moroccans, but its not something generalized. Normally they live in rich luxury areas like Marbella, Puerto Banús and so on. As for them this is their dreamed retirement, rarelly they cause disburbs because they don´t like to create problems in the place they have their mannors.

Ola Mark, Great to here from you. Interesting question with somewhat complicated answers. So remember double check for you Spainish or Portuguese tax attorney. For Portugal contact Filomena Silva [e-mail] she is fantastic. She can set up a video can with you. Please let her know we sent you. Portugal-no longer has a Golden VISA through property ownership. So you may just want a d7 anyway. Spain- you should be able to after a year but this could be effected based upon the area you live in. Hope this gets you started! We would recommend that if you are planning on 1600 euros you build your budget in an area located somewhat outside of the main cities. I am curious on your views on Medicare Part B. Those services are not available outside the USA and one must apply at/around age 65 and pay a monthly premium. Expats can opt not to sign up for Part B, but would face a 10% premium penalty for each year out of the system if one returns to the USA. So, do you gamble that you will never return to the USA and pocket the premiums? Or pay the premiums as a risk mitigation in case you unexpectedly have to return to the USA?

Ola Mitchell Good question and the answer is different for each person. We choose to maintain part B for the first 1 year. And then once we felt we were safe in saying we weren't coming back cancelled it. So for a couple hundred a month you may just want to keep it. Hope this helps. Hi Alan. I listen to your videos often. Why Malaga is #1 in Spain for retirement? You did not mention much about it in the video. IMHO Valencia and Alicante are strong contenders too. We too are from US and considered for retirement (in maybe 5 yrs) Portugal first (until it killed NHR), but after visiting both Portugal and Spain, liked Spain more. A question about taxes in retirement: is it possible to live for 6 months in Spain and another 6 in Portugal, do we still have to pay those high taxes in both or maybe you become non-resident for tax? How much taxes do you need to pay for SSI and 401k? Please give us an idea.

Ola, You would need to get a Visa in either Spain or Portugal and set up tax residence which means you must stay just over 6 months consecutive or 8 months non consecutive. Then the remainder could be in the other country as non tax. You would still need to pay your US taxes or at least file. As for how much you really need to contact a tax attorney in the country you want to get your Visa in. It's best to rent first before buying, to make sure you are happy with the area. As far as recommendations for Your investment, best to contact a professional. Make sure you do all the research about Spain first. For example, in most cases dual citizenship is not available to US citizens. But it still is a good option if you don't require a second passport. Hola! We will be in Malaga in March for a month. This will be our due diligent trip. I will most likely apply for the passive visa because I will be living on my SS. In Europe, taxes are generally higher than in the United States, although there are differences between different countries; however, the medium and long-term trend is harmonization. I believe that all those who want to settle in Europe must first understand that the price to pay for enjoying good public services, security, good infrastructure, social equality,... is paying taxes. The "ultra liberals" are right, nothing is free, here we have chosen to pay for these services with progressive taxes, so that we can all enjoy them..., it is not a perfect system but perhaps it is less bad than others. In any case, I believe that what characterizes European society, there being many differences between countries, since Nordic countries are not the same as Central European or Mediterranean countries, is our lesser individualism and also that we must work to live, not live to work.

Unfortunately if you have retirement income beyond social security, Spanish income taxes are punitive beyond belief and basically not compatible with American pensions. If you have substantial retirement income you’ll owe half of it to the Spanish government.

It's funny that those who call themselves expatriates instead of immigrants talk about xenophobia... In Spain there are racists, xenophobes, classists, stupid people, ... in the same proportion as in any country in the world. Now if you come to Spain to live, just as if you are going to live in another country in the world, my advice is that you learn the local language and adapt to the local customs, if in Spain you live and behave like a foreigner, You will be treated as a foreigner, it's that simple.
