If you Tax tourists they will have less money to spend in the local economy, but it will give Government extra money to spend on a select few.

Tourist tax doesn’t bother me as long as the money goes to improving conditions for locals ie more affordable housing exclusively for lower paid workers

That is not going to happen, the money will end up in the hands of the politicians, who will use it to try to stay in power.

How much of Lisbon's tourist tax is spent removing or even preventing graffiti? At a guess, not a cent.

Face it,corruption in Spanish politics is a tradition,on all levels from local town halls up to the "Moncloa" in Madrid

I live in a small Spanish town, and as far as local politics are concerned I´m told that several dynastic local families wield power and have an inordinate say in what happens here. It is just another, deeper level of government and perhaps more representative of local needs. I imagine at times it acts to protect local interests where it can. And yes, there is always, everywhere, corruption -- but the two should not be confused.

Mass tourism leads to housing problems for locals. What are those millions of euros from the tourist tax spent on? Not on social housing. A little bit of socialism doesn't hurt when the private sector is the problem. The money is there to be allocated to who knows.

Spain has a demographic catastrophe Jose as well as the usual low paid jobs and unemployment. Young locals can't afford those houses. Spanish social housing is garbage and where is it going to be built in a place like Malaga anyway? Mass tourism blame culture is a disguise for deep rooted and chronic problems within Spain.

@@joseantoniodavila2752 The trouble is that those solutions just paper over the cracks. Successive Spanish governments have done nothing to improve Spain's internationally recognised poor quality education system. Spanish unemployment and poorly paid agency jobs is the realistic future for so many people. They will always struggle for housing.Transforming the education system would be a real solution. Is it going to happen? No.

Around 1983, Portugal (pre-EEC) introduced an 'exit tax' of 1,000 escudos, which hit tourists hard. If you stayed more than IIRC 3 days, you had to pay it in cash at the airport. It really p-eed off tourists, some of whom vowed never to return. As a day-tripper from Spain, I didn't have to pay it.

Interesting video Stuart. The tourist tax is nothing new. I fist came to Spain in the 60's and there was tourist tax then. It was only a couple of pestas but it was there. I also came across it in the 70's when I visited the Costa Blanca and it was added to the hotel bill. As far as the Mili is concerned, I can't see any young person thinking it's a good idea especially when they can currently get paid for sitting at home and doing nothing.

Spain announced plans to monitor British mobile phones this summer. The surveillance tactic is part of a new strategy to combat overtourism. Opposition parties have criticised the plans, which will use the number of phones to measure beach overcrowding. They agree that the problem of mass tourism has to be dealt with but claim the beach monitoring proposal will not solve the crisis. People's Party defended the proposal, saying: "We need objective data, not just perceptions, and new technologies make it possible to obtain this.

It was obvious that this 'reflection' was only going to result in one outcome. Does anyone dispute that the PM's wife was involved with the airline bail-out? Does anyone really expect that a line-by-line audit would not show something remiss?

Tourist tax is not a bad idea. I would spread the costs of public facilities that tourists and locals both use to all not just the locals paying for it all. The only problem would be how the money collected would be allocated. Maybe having an "untouchable" use (where politicians could not reallocate it) like low cost housing for low wage earners to compensate for housing for losses to short term rentals like Airbnb.

If I can afford a vacation in Spain, then a few euros more wouldn’t negatively impact our stay. San Diego has The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) or room tax of about 10% - I think it’s about 12% in LA. Of course some hotels also add a “Resort Fee” and it’s not unusual to get a parking fee also. And sales tax (restaurants and bars) is nearly 8% and tipping (gratuity) is around 20% is considered customary.

So that whole( mandatory) complusory military is an answer in itself. They wouldn't have a choice. South Korea does it, I know not in the UK or EU, but it works there. Give them an incentive maybe? Who knows, but if it's mandatory, no one would have a choice. Wouldn't be idea, but it is good to get the young kids some direction and they would learn something in the military also. Military isn't all fighting. There is a lot that goes on in the military.
