I've been driving an EV for the last 6 years and it is brilliant - over 75,000 kms. It has got easier but the country is doing a poor job of getting the infrastructure out there. On the motorways there are hardly any rapid chargers. You would think that would be the first places to install them. In the towns where there are people living in flats there need to be places where people park the car over night and leave it plugged in ready fully charged for the next day. The car dealers need more incentives to sell the EVs. How come all the advertising they are doing is for the ICE cars??? EVs are a better technology and a better experience to drive. The answer is not hybrids. You just make cars more complicated that way . All the hotels and restaurants have car parks, where are the chargers? I want to plug in and have the car charging while I am enjoying the facilities of the hotel. There must be other blocks on the necessary progress. There is a town in Catalonia - Setcases there has been a charger installed for the last 4 years and still it is not actually connected to the electric??? Don't they want car drivers to use their hotels and restaurants??? France in contrast has been doing a much better job of installing charging points for some time. So I'd say it is a political thing. EV's are cheaper to run over the life of the vehicle. per KM cost is much better and need very little maintenance compared to ICE cars. Total cost of ownership is lower. There needs to be more effort by the country to educate people of the benefits, because targets have been set for not selling more ICE cars with the filthy, poisonous fumes. It really is bad to have all those fumes hanging around the towns and cities for people to breath.

Do you think the extraction of lithium is good for the environment? ICE/hybrids will remain the preferred option until the infrastructure and the electrical grid capacity catches up. Even then lithium mining like every other extractive industry has its own set of environmental and geopolitical issues. In the medium term better mass transit based on renewables and more research into alternative non lithium technologies is a good option.

And my house has an efficient solar system, and could never charge an EV.
@_TheRealGod3 күн бұрын
@@ourfarmhouseinspainWhy would that be?
@ourfarmhouseinspain3 күн бұрын
@_TheRealGod Because rurally, power supply can be quite minimal, sometimes only 2 or 3kw. Cities and towns, the very places where EVs are most practical, have an adequate power supply. It will take a decade or two of upgrades to bring rural Spain into full power levels. I'm off grid with an excellent system, but I'll never be charging an EV here, and the thought of having a non hybrid EV in the countryside here is a pipedream, whatever Madrid or Brussels might mandate.

Electric cars have ridiculous resale value in Spain. I have a June 2023 Tesla Model 3 LR AWD with enhanced autopilot. I checked a few places to sell it in November 2024, and the price I am getting is 50% less than what I paid for it. So buyer beware, buy an electric car if you are going to use it for 7-10 plus years in Spain. Many used car dealers even tell you they won’t buy electric cars outright.

On EVs....Bought a Tesla 2 months ago, based inland, towards Zaragoza, my observations are as follows. Even rurally, there are enough charging points for current demand,albeit quite slow. The optimum domestic setup is to get an EV with long range battery with solar PV and battery setup in the house. This enables charging at home for nothing, occasional topping up at local chargers and enough range to get you to the big cities and airports. There definitely needs to be more fast, superchargers that are widely available. Repsol gas stations often have an installed charger, but of course, not working😂!

great video Stuart. In the west coast of the EEUU they stopped offering free charging because of the higher cost of electricity and because of inconsiderate people who leave their vehicles there all day or night and therefore being very inconsiderate of other electric vehicle owners. IMHO plug in hybrids are the interim solution. you can charge overnight at your home and most every day trips for the average driver is less than 60 miles so you would operate on battery 90% of the time. No range anxiety on longer trips because the regular combustible engine goes on after the 60 mile battery runs out. Thank you for all your work Stuart. Feliz ano nuevo.

People don't like change, and electric car batteries are as expensive as an entire car. Plus, they need to be replaced more frequently than most Spaniards would replace their cars with new ones. I live in Spain so i hear people talk about this every now and then, and this is pretty much what i gather from it. Well, and the fact charging stations aren't as common here so you need to pay for one to be installed.
