We start with Honduras
The catracho people. That’s how we call hondureños a very particular way of speaking… They have a significant use of vos instead of tu. They say they use it for maximum familiarity, so to me they are a bit confianzudo. They are friends with everybody. Catrachos also changing some sounds, so like many countries they sometimes drop the s and make it j, como estaj?
And sometimes they drop the d at the end of the words.
I would say Honduran accent is very clear, maybe more clear than Colombian… What am I saying??? They have very particular expressions that almost always go with ch. Chuco is dirty, Chepos are the cops, chingo is when a piece of clothing is too small, estar chorreado (tener miedo) Maje!!! . A fun fact about Honduras. Did you know that Honduras has the 2nd largest coral reef in the world after the great barrier reef in Australia? It is shared with other countries but it sounds really cool.
Now we move to Bolivia! And guys when people ask me about my favorite place when I travelled south America, I have to say Bolivia. It was literally like being in another planet. There were salt deserts that make the planet look like a mirror and red lakes… anyways. Bolivia has many regional accents that are very unique but for the foreign ear hard to distinguish. Two things characterize Bolivian Spanish the influence of indigenous languages like Quechua and Aymara, and their unique expressions. A big percentage of Bolivia does not have Spanish as a first language and some words have entered the language. For example, they say estar kh’encha (to have bad luck), ch’aqui (hangover), and my personal favorite (kh'orotón) Idiot.
They also have very particular expressions like cojudo another way of saying idiot (You can tell how advanced a civilization is by how many ways they can say idiot) and the legendary YAAAAAAA from la paz. And I am going to ask bolivians… what does that mean.. They say ot all the time. Yaaaa. You get into a bus in La Paz and it is like YAAAAA YAAAAA
Now Let’s talk about Paraguay… Not a lot of people know much about Paraguay… It is a fascinating place. It is one of the only countries in the world where almost the entire population is fully bilingual. 90% of people speak Guarani and Spanish. And the mix is evident. And even more than Bolivians they switch back and forth between Gurani and Spanish, a mix called Jopará, they way a lot of Latino Immigrant switch in Spanish and English.
Sometimes Paraguayans sound like Argentinian that moved out of the country and developed a foreign accent. So they use vos like argentinians, they have a slightly different sound for the Y LL, Argentinians say She, they say JE and they also have a rolling of the r’s that is different like in between an English speaker and a Spanish speaker from another country. They also seem to be less italicize and deeper than Argentinians. Correct me if I am wrong, Paraguayans! :)
And even more than Bolivians they switch back and forth between Guarani and Spanish, a mix called Jopará, they way a lot of Latino Immigrant switch in Spanish and English.
Another fun fact about Paraguay is that in the mid 1800 Paraguay lost a war to Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil that almost decimated the population. Although it is contended they say they lost 60% of the population and 90% of the males. Apparently this caused a change in the dating dynamics of the country where polygamy became the norm and incentive European immigration, making it a country with mostly European descendants.

An actual Bolivian here, although not from La Paz, (but married to a Paceño) the "Yaaaa" is an idiomatic expression with a huge variety of meanings, and believe it or not, those meanings change depending the context, intonation, pitch and length with which you say the Yaaa. It can mean, but not limited to: "Really?" Or "Are you kidding?" "Nahh, I'm joking" "Is this for real?" "Wow", and tons more, you can express surprise, sarcasm, disbelief, exasperation and so on and so forth.... I've heard it said almost as punctuation..... totally madning and hilarious!!!

As a Bolivian, let me tell you that it definitely depends on what part of Bolivia you’re in. The people from La Paz speak extremely different than the people from Santa Cruz.

@@abadonservant so true. I am curious as to what you may have heard. Bolivia is the only Latin American country I've really gotten to know. I will write two identical groups of sentences. One from Cochabamba and one from Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Santa Cruz: Como eJtaJ pueJ. Grandango mis zapatoJ. Chiquitingo tuJ zapatoJ. Voy a correr. Cochabamba: Como eSHtaPs pueSH. GrandoTS miSS ZapaTS. ChiquitiTS tuSH zapaTS. Voy a coZHer. SCruz- takes out the final S & replaces the S with a breath. -ito becomes -ingo & muy ___ becomes -ango. Coch... adds letters like a P to esta to become estaps. It really pronounces the s sometimes making a shh sound. Many vowels gets eliminated like the -ito becomes -ITS. Grandote becomes GrandoTS. Entonces become EntonSS. Si or yes in English is always SiPS. My last name is Vea. The people there always said my last name was Bates (rhyming with "gates"). Finally, RR is pronounced like the Argentine LL or Y. Sometimes the RR is pronounced like S. I know, for example, Cordoba and Buenos Aires could be very different. I'd like to hear what kind of extreme differences you have heard in different countries. Thanks. Or the extreme differences of dialects in one particular country.

So in Ecuador - Guyaco is more just how the people who live in the city of Guayaquil are referred to as. Costeño is the name all the people of the coastal region are referred to, as well as the accent that Guayacos and other costeños have. The differences between the accents of Guayaquil and other cities on the coast are very small. Same goes for Quiteño. That really just applies to the people of the city of Quito, whereas the name Serrano refers to the accent and and the people of the mountainous highland region that includes Quito.

As a Quiteño, I have to say you did a pretty good job with the expressions hermano. So i wanted to help you out with a some interesting things about the local dialect. The "fff" sound at the end of some expressions is a substitute for "pues". So if I said "Yaff!" it would mean "Ya pues!". "¿Entonces qué mismoff?" would mean "¿Entonces qué mismo pues?" It's used in a very similar way as in Medellin-Antioqueño spanish where they say "pues" after a statement. Also many foreigners, when hearing Quiteños speak casually they think that we "sound" Mexican. I can see the similarity, but the Quiteño accent is way less pronounced and also incorporates so many Kichwa (Quichua Ecuatoriano) words and expressions to an extent such that some words are pretty much exclusively only used in the Kichwa equivalent. Like "ñaño or ñaña", which means brother or sister and is commonly used to mean friend throughout Ecuador. But if you're referring to your actual siblings you would pretty much never say hermano or hermana, only "ñaño and ñaña". Also, we roll our Rs in a very weird way, it kind of sounds like the Argentinian "sha" sound, except it replaces the "Rs". So, "Ven corriendo rápido." would sound like "Ven coshiendo shapido". We also use "Vos" a lot informally, except we don't conjugate our verbs according to "vos" as in Argentina. Hope that was helpful. Saludos desde Quito!

The y sound in Guaraní is not present in Spanish or English. On top of that there are also nasal and oral vowels, creating the even weirder ỹ sound, which is common and a constant struggle for me. Guaraní is a fascinating language.

Another topic right here) me dijo que porque no pronunciaba bien la palabra pollo? Y yo muy confundida le pregunté y como lo decís vos pues? Y me dijo POLLO y luego le pregunté y como lo digo yo? (Chapulin episode vibes right here) y me dijo: POIO. Mi cerebro explotó, porque es verdad!!! Yo dijo: quiero poio juco y su cara es de: “como somos hermanos centroamericanos, vivímos tan cerca y hablas tan diferente? Ahora vivo en USA y en algún lamento traté de tener un español más neutral, lo logré perp no está yo!! Ahora le dijo majes a mis amigos y aunque no me entiendan, me alegra haber conservado mi acento. I work at a Mexican restaurant in the U.S and one of the chefs is Honduran. I don’t know if he uses street slang but I have never heard anyone speak like him. I really understand almost nothing he says whereas I can understand other people decently.

6:36 el significado del "yaa" puede variar levemente, pero en general se traduce como: "Pará de decir webadas, estas mintiendo cojudo" o "no te lo creas" o "te estoy troleando" "me estas troleando" "nos estamos troleando" "... lo digo a manera de relajarnos" etc. Es una respuesta a un troleo, una mentira, un hecho o dicho absurdo o una reacción ante algo gracioso seguido de una carcajada (en mi caso y de algunos amigos) "yaaaajajajah". Asi mi agradable amigo, cuatecito, cumpita, yuntita, duquecito.

As a Bolivian from La Paz, another expression is « que macana » which means that sucks. The « yaaa » is like saying: yeah right. If you hear: « ya pues » that means come on. The rest u got it exactly. Thanks for the compliments. Bolivia is a beautiful gem.

Thank you much! Please listen to some of the voices used by Duolingo to each Spanish to English speakers. There is a woman who comes across as a tweaker in her excessive speed and dysrhythm, a diaper face mask, and endemically illegal accent (gringo "j" for "y" and "ll", no concluding "s", etc.), a woman who sounds Italian, and a man who sounds like Count Dracula on downers. It's supposed to be representative of Latin American Spanish not the minority dialects.

Lol “ yaaaaaaaa” in Bolivia specifically La Paz doesn’t mean “now”…. It has no meaning… you just say at end of every joke among your friends kinda like saying “for real?” “Are you serious?” “You joking” at the end… Bonus: a better way to use the word “Cojudo” is “Si Cojudo?” Note the question mark at the end and use proper tone

La "y" en guaraní suena similar a como se pronuncia "4 (四)" en chino (ignorando la S). Lo curioso es que con esa misma pronunciación, en guaraní significa "madre (sy)"
