Paddy Considine gave an Emmy worthy performance. From the moment Viserys walked into the throne room to his last breath, he was just stellar. You could see Daemon was hurting seeing his brother like this! When he picked up the crown for Vicerys, it was so beautiful yet heartbreaking. Just a great episode!

I wholeheartedly agree. That was a performance of a lifetime. His last walk to the Throne gave me chills, and Daemon helping him up the last few steps and placing his crown on his head. I finally lost it during his speech at dinner. I couldn’t hold back the tears any longer. It’s heartbreaking knowing that he’s gone now, because for the first time this season I realized how much I loved his character.

Just to clarify Daemon and Rhaenyra’s kids ages, it’s been 6 years since episode 7. Joffrey was already born so he’s 6-7, Aegon was next and he looks around 5, Viserys is about 2-3, and now they’re on their third kid together. So basically they had a kid every 2 years since episode 7.

That’s the whole point. Blood doesn’t come from the patriarchal line, the name alone does. Jace and Luke are both dragon riders. They both inherited Targaryen blood magic from their mother. If the realm believed that blood only passed through the patriarchal line it still wouldn’t matter. Rhaenyra and Rhaenys share the experience of facing doubt in their ability to rule due to their gender. These two characters understand their solution satisfies both name and blood.
@vkn798
@vkn798 2 жыл бұрын
Let’s not forget Vaemond did not even know that Rhaenyra would betroth Jace and Luke to Baela and Rhaena when he decided to make the petition. The betrothal further strengthens House Velaryon and rights the wrong done by Laenor by ensuring the offspring of Jace and Baela (which the casting makes CLEAR is Velaryon) will sit the iron throne. Furthermore, one of the main themes of the show is the ambition of second sons - Daemon, Vaemond, Aemond, etc. even Aegon is second born. Daemon cuts Vaemond in half for doing exactly what he himself attempted to do. A big part of this story is the entitlement and double standards of Targaryens.
@robboaron
@robboaron 2 жыл бұрын
@@storyofm6820 Plenty of people in the realm supported Rhaenyra's claim as ruling queen. And the mother's blood matters. The boys are dragon riders because of their mother's blood. Same for Corliss and Rhaena's children who were dragon riders because of their mother's blood. And for the name: Luke and his brothers are acknowledged as a Velaryon by their 'father' Leanor, by the Lord of house Velaryon Corliss and by King Viserys. A king can legitimize basterds.

Also, making the Velaryons black for the show is a great casting solution. Instead of wasting time explaining why people don’t believe that Jace Luke and Joff are Laenor’s sons based on rumours hair colour and noses, the casting gets the audience “in on it” immediately, without even showing the relationship between Rhaenyra and Harwin. This show doesn’t waste time explaining what the audience should care about, it shows you, the writing, casting and cinematography are fantastic.

What a pleasure to see how you two IMMEDIATELY understood what was happening in the last scene, and all of the implications. So many other reactors didn't get it at all, even ones who have watched all of GOT. You hit the nail on the head by stating how annoying and ironic it was that Viserys (who had all the best intentions and wanted to heal the rift between the families more than anything in the world) accidentally set it off again by thinking he was talking to Rhaenyra in the last scene. Also have to give the showrunners major props by writing the episode this way. In the books, this never happens. In the books, Alicent and Rhaenyra were never close friends. They're 9 years apart in age in the books. When Viserys marries Alicent in the books, she is 18 and Rhaenyra is 9. Also in the books Alicent was more of a Cersei type character and far less sympathetic than in the show. By creating a friendship between the characters in the show, everything plays out with a lot more emotion. Good on you guys!
@suddenimpulse030
@suddenimpulse030 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure I agree with that setting things off again, it just further gave Alicent further justification after she had a reprieve from the earlier dinner. A moment like that does not wash away years of history, or what it has done to the views and thoughts of their children, which as we can see from the dinner, were still at each other even when the parents had been more cooperative. It certainly is a tragic situation all the same, and certainly didn't help in the slightest. It may well do extra damage.

@@suddenimpulse030 In my opinion, the show chose to make it appear that Alicent and Rhaenyra were on the verge of a reconciliation of sorts after the dinner. While their toasts were probably just said to give Viserys some peace, the writers added a scene where Alicent takes Rhaenyra by the hand and entreats her to stay at the Red Keep longer. When Rhaenyra says she'll see the children home and return later on dragonback, the writers clearly want to evoke a feeling of hopefulness in the viewers. After all, the King had already gone to bed and there was no need for either of them to say things they didn't really mean. I quite agree with all you say about not being able to erase years of bad blood in a moment. My point is that the script was clearly structured to make the audience hope that the two women *might* find peace with each other. It's great writing for TV for the script to be so layered. Of course we, the audience (especially book readers) know there is no way this conflict is not going to happen.

What I find so sad and tragic in this episode is that the parents seemed to be genuine towards one another. Perhaps it was only for Viserys, but I believe that Rhaenyra and Alicent were honest towards each other and missed their old friendship. Unfortunately, the conflict has already passed to their children, who learned all their life to hate each other, due to bad parenting and the ambition for the throne. That’s very sad, but at least Viserys enjoyed a last day of peace.

I also felt Alicent was sincere. When Alicent spoke up, I also got the feeling that she was feeling remorse for the first time at the way she treated Rhaenyra and her children. I think everything could have turned out differently if Alicent had not been so bitter and angry at Rhaenyra. It would have been so different if Alicent called Rhaenyra out on her lies. Instead she let it fester and her hatred of Rhaenyra and then Rhaenyra’s children grew.

The thing is with Vaemond, that his blood line would NOT have been lost, since Jace would've married Beala (or the other one idr), "true Velaryon Blood" would've passed to the next generation. So while his initial disagreement was justified, his explosion at the end was straight up stupid. Especially since this went AGAINST Corlys' wish, his brother.
@waitingforgodot466
@waitingforgodot466 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Late to the discussion but I agree regarding the "true Velaryon Blood". 100%. If that REALLY was his goal, he should have backed down. He didn't. They were right, it was more to do with ambition. I do understand why it looks like a stupid decision, and in many ways it really really was. But I think he knew what the consequences would probably be. He made a choice. He realized that while he had FINALLY been given at least a chance at getting Driftmark, with Viserys taking the throne to speak publicly to support Lucerys, and his sister in law and Rhaenyra publicly stating the marriages would happen, he knew he had now lost Driftmark. Within a span of minutes. He was SOOOO close, at least to the possibility. And then it was snatched away. That can be worse than pining for something but never really having that chance. A pipe dream vs. a real possibility. From where he stands at that moment, I think he quickly reassessed and realizes that besides having Driftmark sort of snatched away, he has now also "shown his true stripes" so he will probably never be be trusted at Driftmark, if his brother does manage to survive Lord Corlys may be upset with him, if Rhaenyra becomes queen she will never trust him nor will Daemon and he is losing his argument based essentially on a lie, regardless of the marriages. I think he made a conscious decision in that moment to lay out the truth publicly for all to hear, regardless of the cost. The people may "know" the truth, but now it has been clearly stated out loud in a room full of important people. He must have known in committing treason, and with Daemon right there, he would die, or at least suffer a serious punishment. But he got in "the last word" . The actor kind of said as much. Vaemond may die, but he didn't 'go quietly into the night'. I think his ego kicked in. In other words, I don't think it was a stupid decision from the POV of not realizing the danger he was in. He knew. It just seems to me he thought it through and chose to do it anyway out of anger and frustration and crushing disappointment and knowing there may be long term consequences for what he tried to do. He wanted to punish those who had stolen his possible future and was so selfish he didn't even care that in doing so he might be harming his nieces, who ARE of true Velaryon blood. Sorry I rambled a bit. I just liked your post and wanted to follow up.
@yasmina3999
@yasmina3999 2 жыл бұрын
@@waitingforgodot466 even though their blood will be saved by marriage, Rhaenyra still dishonored his house by giving birth to 3 obvious bastards. Moreover, she kept Luke for 6 years on a Dragonstone and the boy didn't know anything about the sea and the fleet (remember that at that time almost everyone was sure that Corlys died, which means Luke could already become Lord of Driftmark) +Rhaenyra's marriage to Daemon after her husband's death looked suspicious.
@waitingforgodot466
@waitingforgodot466 2 жыл бұрын
@@yasmina3999 I guess I'm a bit confused at your response, since it seems you may be thinking I would disagree with you? I actually agree. We may be talking a bit past each other. I agree, Rhaenyra dishonored his house. Yup. I honestly don't blame him for being pissed at the circumstances. As I said, he would be losing Driftmark essentially based on a lie. A lie everyone knows is a lie but the King has declared it treason to speak of. I was agreeing with the other post that if ALL he TRULY cared about was the "true Velaryon Blood", then in the end he should have backed down and protected his nieces once the succession was reaffirmed by the King AND the betrothal had been publicly stated and acknowledged. His nieces ARE of true Velaryon Blood. Stating publicly that the boys they are betrothed to are bastards is not only considered treason, it now puts his own blood kin in a very difficult, dangerous and tenuous position moving forward. But what I was also really trying to point out in my original response was that I don't think he made a stupid mistake due to ignorance of the danger he was putting himself in. I know some think he made a bad choice out of ignorance and stupidity. I disagree with that sentiment specifically. I think he knew he would likely die. I think in that moment he thought through everything that had happened, the situation as it now stands, and chose to state publicly the boys were bastards knowing he would likely die. He probably did it for a whole host of reasons, but I do think he was VERY aware that once he crossed that line he might not survive. Therefore, I didn't think it was a "stupid" decision but an informed choice. And an emotional one. Was he angry? Yes. Was his house being dishonored? Yes. Did he have a right to be upset? Of course. It wasn't JUST because his house was being dishonored, though, and it wasn't JUST because he wanted to protect the "true Velaryon Blood". I don't believe that for a second. His own ambitions were also being thwarted. He overplayed his hand and lost. And he did not seem to care one iota how what he was saying would affect his own nieces (TRUE descendants of his own brother) once he made the accusation. Unless he was hoping this would stop the betrothals, but I think he was deluding himself if that is the case. (As for Luke's lack of training at Driftmark, I'm assuming Luke wasn't on Driftmark because, with Lord Corlys not there for 6 years, Luke wasn't really wanted on Driftmark, especially with the suspicious circumstances of Laenor's death. Rhaenys certainly wouldn't have wanted him there after she believed Daemon and Rhaenyra had murdered her son. And definitely not Vaemond. I'm betting bringing Luke to Driftmark to "learn the ropes" was simply never even offered, possibly even actively rejected by Rhaenys and Vaemond, even if they probably did not publicly state why). Hope that clarifies my thoughts.

The symbolism in Viserys wounds were from his missteps as king. Because he could not keep his own house in order, it ate away at his power and the future. He forced the burden of childbirth onto his wife and was suffering carrying the burden on his back as well, he trusted in his hand that was manipulating him and so his hand began to rot. Towards the end, he refused to acknowledge or SEE that his daughter clearly had bastards for sons and thus his eye was removed. Now that the king is dead things will no doubt get worse including the fighting in the family as well. Knowing Alicent she will no doubt think the king's last words meant that he wants their son to take the Iron Throne because she always hears what she wants to in these situations, which in it's own right will cause war I think which sucks because I really wish Alicent and Rhaenyra could be friends again.

I was with you guys last episode. It didn't insistent click that Damon's laugh was meant to redirect the heat at himself. Though it now makes sense, I originally took it as him simply laughing at the mention of unsighted Valeryon blood while knowing it to bed farthest from there case. Totally agree with Pudgey about Aemond in previous episode. Laena's kids probably haven't fully-processed yet that their mother is really gone and anyone can ride Vhagar now. And people want to invalidate their reaction by hammering in how wrong they are cause of technical dragon-riding laws. Wanting to confront the person who in their eyes disrespected their mother on her funeral day is perfectly normal. Aemond was being insensitive and also the first one who hurled insults and acted all superior. His bonding scene with Vhagar was really cool but what turned me off was his attitude right after. And yeah he's a kid too who prob grew up on bad parenting, that's understandable. But in that situation he's definitely not the victim a lot of fans are making him to be. About this episode, I really get Spartan's frustration about that last scene. I felt like there was a glimmer of hope for Rhaenyra and Alicent's relationship, but I'm afraid it has been snuffed out. Alicent will use what she heard from Viserys as justification to put Aegon in the throne and go against Rhaenyra.

In defense of Aemond, he had been bullied by his siblings for not having a dragon of his own and was picked on for being small and weak for most of his life at that point so he saw his first chance at claiming THE powerful dragon and took it. Also, not sure if it is canon to the show, but Viserys to a degree, also put Aemond down for not having a dragon. Still, I agree about his being insensitive. As for his attitude, it's a classic TV and writing trope, weak kid that is bullied and weak suddenly gets a huge boost to his power and ego so he goes a little crazy over it. Plus could you imagine the sheer adrenaline you'd have from riding a literal dragon? I would still consider him a victim though. You forget that the other kids started the fight and all four of them were beating him when he grabbed the rock to defend himself. He stopped fighting them but then Jace drew a literal blade and that's just an escalation you cannot back down from.

He couldn't even dismount his horse properly and was already in pain. He continued to decline for years and was barely functional the last years of his life. Rhaenyra had two healthy parents for most of her early years. And I'm betting Otto was pushing for Alicent to have control over the raising of the kids, not Viserys.

I’ve just realised Alicent says ‘especially today’ because the petition is questioning Luke’s parentage and Rhaenyra’s virtue, and Aegon running around fathering bastards would put a dent in the crown’s authority in this matter. Good to see Alicent at least holds Aegon up to the same standards that women are judged by.
@suddenimpulse030
@suddenimpulse030 2 жыл бұрын
Eh she cares more about the appearance than the standards. It seems this "behavior" of laying with women without their consent has happened a few times before based on how it was presented, especially how quickly the moon tea was brought in, which is a complicated concoction only made by maesters.

@@suddenimpulse030 Yeah that’s true. The seven and ‘upholding decency’ are the only weapons she can publicly use against Rhaenyra, and Aegon was undermining that I guess.

I'm laughing at the "courtesy" part about Aemond not taming Vhaegar. In what world would you think that way when your House is at war with another for the highest position in the realm. Alicent and her children have targets on their backs. Aemond taming that dragon when he did was the smartest thing he could have done, and gave Team Green a massive power boost. Also in the fight scene last episode, Aemond didn't use violence first...it was self defense AND he still lost an eye. He also held back from hitting the kid with the rock. Alicent acting out as she did was fully understandable as well, you gotta put yourself in her shoes. Meanwhile Rhaenyra says "Aegon should be sharpy questioned" meaning tourtured. I like parts of both sides, but they are both the villians lol. I'm a bit late on this reaction, but wanted to give my two cents. Loving the reactions so far! Also really enjoyed The Witcher ones. #TeamGreen

It's impressive when someone who knows the story from watching the original show can pick up on almost everything, but it's even more impressive that people with little to no knowledge of the main story can pick of on little things so quickly. These shows don't hold your hand one bit, so an important piece of dialogue can be over in 5 seconds and it's on to the next thing. Like when Aegon and Aemond were talking about marrying their sister last episode. It was literally 5 seconds of them saying that and then that was all we heard of it.

It was said right at the beginning that 6 years have passed. There are disadvantages if Alicent's and Raehnyra's sons sharing the same name. It is very unfortunate that Alicent now really believes that she has the king's consent to ascend the throne herself. Or at least that she believes she is part of the prophecy on which the future of the house depends. This means that she has to have Raehnyra and her sons eliminated, because officially the king gave her the support again. There is no other way. And she believes that this is exactly what the king has unofficially given his consent to. Middlefinger Strong and his assassins will probably be used again for this.

I'm not sure if you quite understood why Princess Rhaenys sided with Rhaenyra. Daemon is right that she keeps politics and her sons "death" separate. Rhaenys said it herself to Rhaenyra: "You can bargain with me all you like but tomorrow [you're going to lose]." Siding with her would have done literally nothing. But once Viserys came in and it became clear that Rhaenyra would win, she took advantage of the betrothal offer and sided with her.
@suddenimpulse030
@suddenimpulse030 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. You can see this in her face change and the camera focus on her when Viserys came into the throne room. The situation had changed. I'm sure she also respected the fact that he put in the effort to show up for this and then focused on her opinion on the matter over everyone else's as well.

If you poke a bear with a stick who is to blame when you are mauled? We typically say things like either no one is to blame or everyone is to blame, which usually leads to no consequences taken. Or more often we seek to vindicate one as the victim and lay all the blame on the other, when consequences must be taken. That is what I love about this show and the GOT world is it shows the harsh reality that in most situations everyone at least plays a part in what happens and blame or vindication all lie in just what perspective you see. How many puzzle pieces are in front of you to make your judgment, and what weight do you give to each? Really appreciate that you see it and discuss it so often when seeing both sides of each plot point and character. I'm fully on team black as well, but understand anyone that is fully on team green. Both Alicent and Rhaenyra have many strengths and flaws. Valid noble motivations and selfishly justified ones. We all have our favorite points of view from each character.

Viserys is one of the worst. He is weak, all he did was to split and destroy his house and the realm. It's such an obvious mistakes but still kept doing it because he was blinded by his love for his unfit daughter.

A consort is a monarch’s spouse, so Alicent is Viserys’ Queen consort. A regent rules on behalf of a monarch who’s either to young or sick rule. So Alicent is pretty much Viserys’ regent too, but she’s already Queen consort.
@snowforia5019
@snowforia5019 2 жыл бұрын
Daemon is already called Rhaenyra’s consort because he’s already a prince and has his own claim. They have to make it clear that she is the heir, not him. That’s also why he’d be prince consort rather than king consort.

The Hand is in the 2nd highest position, so when the king is away or sickly, usually. Hence why both Otto and Ned were sitting the throne, not Alicent or Cersei, but yes if they were officially Queen Regent it would be a bit different, but sometimes there is some flexibility in the two positions given the context, historically. Alicent would likely be the long term one making decisions if the king passed but a child considered too young was the heir. Cersei in the case of a Joffrey, normally, which is why Robert chose to have Ned take that position instead via the written letter. He trusted him more in that position as well as to course correct Joffrey as he aged.

It's funny how the characters in this story take up a "blacks vs greens" rivalry while the story shows they all have their own, actual reasons for doing things, even the horrible things they all do. Showing that there really isn't one perfect side that is "right" and yet so many of the viewers are like "yeah! Let's actually think back vs green and argue at everyone for picking a different side!" If you are picking a side, you havent been paying attention.

Of course it's better to stay out of it, but sometimes it's just impossible. There is only so much shit people can tolerate, and when it overflows you just can not keep it neutral anymore. I could tolerate Rhaenyra's shit up until the point of her mothering 3 bastards and naming two of them heirs. It's just too much to overlook even if I try really hard. It's just disgusting abomination. To equal them greens have to do something bad enough either. But they still didn't for the whole season. So I'll be hoping they would, so I could be neutral again. But for now there is clearly a better side and disgusting one.

Here is another reason Alicent believed he was talking about their son Aegon when he spoke his dying words.This is the script from episode 3 by the fire. Is everything all right, Your Grace? You know, I... I named her... to protect the realm from Daemon. She was my only child. "The Realm's Delight." I named her out of love because I no longer believed... Believed what, my love? ( sighs ) Many in my line have been dragon riders. Very few among us have been dreamers. What is the power of a dragon... next to the power of prophecy. The hour is too late, husband. When Rhaenyra was a child... I saw it in a dream... as vivid as these flames, I saw it. A male babe born to me... wearing the Conqueror's crown. ( sighs ) And I so wanted it to be true, to be a dreamer myself. I sought that vision again, night after night... but it never came again. I poured all my thought and will into it. And my obsession killed Rhaenyra's mother. Queen Alicent: Viserys. I thought Rhaenyra was the way out of my abyss of grief and regret. And naming her heir would begin to set things right. Oh, it did. I never imagined I would remarry... that I would have a son.
