We made the backlight-less gameboys work by developing the arcane art of intuiting the perfect angle for all light sources. Had one of my nieces inherit a AGB game boy advance and some games for it from her older sister, and she asked how the hell you were supposed to see anything. I proceeded to tilt it the correct way while it was still in her hands, while facing her, and had her call me a wizard because I managed to get the angle correct without being able to see the screen myself. It became pretty much muscle memory, and like riding a bike, you never really forget.
