so does the venom in the spine only affect humans or something? Fish never seem to be bothered by eating them. Went snorkeling saw a grouper eat one of these lion fish. They didn't even kill it, the grouper just ate it
@WhiteGangster4009 жыл бұрын
SirtraineeWHAT I don't think the toxin affects large fish like that but it does get absorbed into the fish and you might contract some of the toxin if you eat the fish. I think cooking it though gets rid of most of it though. That's why its risky to eat large barracuda.
@CynicalPanda10176 жыл бұрын
The lionfish is venomous, not poisonous. The only place venom is resides in the tips of the spines. It doesn't "absorb" anywhere. If you cut the spines off the entire rest of the fishes flesh is edible as sushi if thats what you want to do, or you can filet and cook it. There is no harmful substances anywhere but the tips of the spines.

Venomous spines would not have evolved unless they deterred predators. The lionfish that these videos portray act like they have no predators. Whatever controls lionfish in their home range, it probably is not a larger predator.
@jessedijkstra12205 жыл бұрын
it affects all animals, but some species of shark are just to big for the venom to be effective and some groupers and eels learned to avoid the spines

My thinking is that the venom really stings and hurts a much larger animal: the human. Therefore, I’m wondering what it does to a smaller critter like a shark or grouper?

No most sharks are unaffected by the venoum by a gland in their mouth as with some groupers.

Lionfish hunting is stupid and a waste of time...the period this could have worked has long passed... training other predators to eat them could help but it will take a long time...and there's the vemon issue on top of that.
@venturera_3 жыл бұрын
What's the immediate solution you propose? I mean, if divers just give up and say "Nah man... This is a waste of time" and stop hunting then it will reproduce faster than it actually does, isn't it? (I'm asking seriously, what do you propose, I'm not trying to be rude/mean/sarcastic with the reply)
