Hey so Malaysian here, if you enjoy this as our MRE food, can you imagine our normal meals? We here are EXTREMELY proud of our food because Malaysia have 3 main races (Malay, Indian and Chinese) with their own food and styles than learn and adopt from each other. That’s not mentioning the British heritage, the close proximity of Thailand, Indonesia and now more Korean and Japanese influences. You can literally eat something different everyday for every meal. What you just eaten is a simple malay dish and they do love their spice and chilles Anyways Glad you guys enjoy it! And yeah you are welcome to visit anytime!

"Food is fuel" there is some truth to that but on the flip side ice cream was so deemed so critical for ww2 sailors in the pacific theatre that the navy built an ICE CREAM BARGE. If you force your enlisted men to just eat slop day in and day out there might just be abit of a morale problem.

Am Malaysian, have had this multiple times. I think it's the best offering of the Kembara Meals (fun fact, Kembara means Adventure). On the FRH: the original version of this MRE came with an FRH, but sometime around 2021 or so, they started selling the FRH seperately. No idea why. Cost cutting, maybe. Brahim, the company that nakes these, also supplies combat meals to the Army - albeit the Army meals are basically saucy mains that are supposed to be eaten with rice you cook yourself. Also, "Masak Merah" literally means "cooked red" 😂. Ayam Masak Merah and tomato rice is a traditional malay meal of chicken in a spicy chilli-tomato sauce that gets served at weddings/special occasions.

OK, this is for people who don't know, not those of you in the services/outdoor sports enthusiasts - an MRE is NOT a good general-purpose meal/meal replacement, it's tailored for the lifestyle of soldiers, hikers etc. It isn't healthy for people with a sedentary lifestyle to eat them regularly, but they should provide a high protein content (for muscle growth and repair), high carb content (slow-release energy so that you can keep working hard), and a high electrolyte content (typically salt, but other minerals are important too). This is because as you exercise hard, you typically sweat out a lot of minerals, and your body will shut down rapidly if you lose too many. Unlike civilian alternatives, military MRE's also often have a binding agent in them, so that soldiers don't need to excrete as often - that can be useful in the field, where going to the toilet is either risky or unpleasant - but it isn't a good idea for civilians to mess with their digestion. They also are processed to make them very long-lasting and resistant to temperature/humidity changes, which is awesome for Quartermasters, less so for the soldiers themselves. That can radically affect the taste/texture of food. Civilian alternatives tend to be shorter-life, but less processed and tastier. Given the packaging, I don't think this is a military ration, I think it's a civilian version.

Our (Malaysian) MRE is a bit left behind tbh. Foods are not packed in self heating pack and we still use hexamine fuel to heat those food. But the dishes are very good except lack of energy bars/snacks like the US MRE. Should try the brick hard biacuits with pineapple jam or the papaya w syrup.
@gattonero2915
@gattonero2915 Жыл бұрын
"except lack of energy bars/snacks like the US MRE" This is actually "compensated" with having that large sugar packet part of the Malaysian MRE lol. The idea is that even if you consumed the coffee/tea sachet and you still left with a lot of sugar, you can still get your glucose consumption for that energy by diluting it in water and just consuming it that way LMAO

If you are talking about assembling a duplicate of the kit they were issued with and talking about it, that's never going to happen. The clothing, backpacks, helmet, body armour, food and med kits are readily available on the civilian market (even if they cost a lot i.e. around 8k dollars for a full set). However, the radios/comms, NVG gear, GPS kits, weapon and attachments are either not available for civilians (so they'd have to use similar stuff, not actual kit) or they cost SERIOUS money. We're talking 70k plus to replicate what they were issued.

"Chicken Masak merah" is essentially translated as: "Chicken cooked in Red-Curry", "Masak merah" is Malaysian derivative curry that emphasize heavily on the chilli it uses. Actual Malaysian Military MRE is more than this. Having uncle(s, two of them actually) that frequently brings me surplus MRE back when i was growing up, my favorite is always those Rendang Chicken. Funny thing is, the MRE dimension i identical to the british one, so you can take Malaysian MRE and drop it in British Boiling Vessel and it'll cook normally like British MRE. And in actual Malaysian army MRE, they provide you with meal course for Breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 24 hours consumption, including biscuit, coffee/tea sachet, one kilogram-worth of refined sugar, one MRE pack for one meal (which then accounts to 3 total of meal), and a pineapple jam. Such MRE while defined as '24 hours meal', are often time rated for 3 days worth of food, as Malaysian MRE history stem back to the cold war era when Malaysia was still in its infancy after gaining independence in 1957, and Communist insurgent forces PKM (Parti Komunis Malaya = Malay Communist party) love to use jungle as their battleground in ambushing Malaysian Army and Police force. Malaysian SOF group like VAT69 or GGK "Green Beret" often time had to fight these enemies in the jungle for prolonged time, and often time they are supplied with 3 months-worth of food that has to last for 4 to 5 months of counter-insurgency operations in the vast Malaysian rainforest.
