This is a beginners guide and how to, In this video we look at what specializations to use for Tanking builds, which specializations to pick for beam energy weapons (DPS) and the spec you should use for Science characters. In Star Trek Online you unlock the specialization system at level 50, we will talk about which ones you should do first and the benefits. We will cover the Strategist, Intelligence Officer, Miracle Worker and Temporal Operative specializations in this video.

When i started playing STO some 4 years ago, i took Pilot, (Like you) because of the barrel roll, i noticed that would get me away from the Iconian fire beam, when they targeted me with that. I didn't know anything yet, and i still don't, but i know a lot more now, thanks to you, Stu1701, and CasualSAB. So thanks for this video.... it cleared up a few questions for me about this mechanic.

Ohhh, that's a good question. I went by what clickies I wanted mostly. But the passives, that would really be cool if you get full specs even as a secondory with the limited clickies.

You are correct that only the first 15 abilities of a large Spec tree are used when a large spec tree is placed in a secondary role.

Without much of a PvP community anymore, DPS has really become less important to me than stuff that just looks awesome and feels comfy. I picked up some T5 Infinity's too, so I have been zipping around with those as well. The Lukari UFO's or the Hidrogen T5 Inf had an experimental weapons slot, they would really be off the chain wicked little boats.

I'm the same. I have my 'on meta' ship and build and rest of them are matching. herald weapons on my herald ship, elachi on my elachi, web Canon on my tholian ships etc etc. Same with boffs, my breen uses the breen set, borg uses borg stuff, etc etc. I dont care about doing content the fastest, luckily you can build pretty much anything to do advanced tfo's at a good enough pace. It goes for my alts as well. My jem hadar is in full jem hadar sets with only jem hadar ships, my romulan all romulan stuff. they all get one on theme/race t6x ship and ground set.

Entropic Rider...huh. Worth giving it a shot. Haven't played my Tank recently, as I have been focusing on my different recruit characters. Because I don't abide the "sit 'n' spray" method of piloting, I've actually been running Miracle Worker/Strategist on my DEW builds. Lets me focus other parts of my build on DPS output. I couldn't give you a comparison to Intel, as I stopped parsing (mostly). I can tell you that my builds seem more sturdy, using both the Diversionary Tactics and the Miracle Worker equivalent. Not meta, but an interesting alternative.

Nice, great advice for new players. What I tend to do for new toons is to go for MW/strategist when starting off, for the increased survivalblity in Advanced TFOs (can't do any DPS if you are dead). Then start on Intel specalist, by the time you get intel to full you should have all your Reps aleast to Tier 5 and now have access to the gear and traits to survive.

I've been playing since day 1 and I'm using Intel primary with Pilot secondary for my DEW (SS3) build because the barrel roll is so fun! Also because it lets me actually turn while stopped which is moderately helpful occasionally, but mostly just the barrel roll lol.

I'm relatively new and running a Terran Hydra, and honestly, I run pilot because it's fun and feels thematic as hell. weaving between enemies scraping shields and doing rolls feels exactly how a ship like that should play.

I wouldn't call it wrong. With Strategist you have Diversionary Tactics, which actually increases Threat when Threatening Stance is active. It's a great way to reliably grab Threat, especially during the "alpha strike" phase of the TFO. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try out Temp Ops, but you're not wrong with Strategist.

Running Intel and Strategist on my DPS toon as per advice from one of the top DPS players. Doing pretty ok, especially considering I made the toon in August lol I’ve done a lot of patrol spam to level up and learning to handle a glass cannon type build (I have no healing on it) after over 3,5 years of running meh builds with a lot of survivability on them. Do have to say it’s nice to finally have a good build! My “mentor” and I were doing randoms together a couple of weeks ago and it felt really good to finish Tzenkethi Front Advanced in about 3,5 mins from end of briefing until the 5 bases and Tzenkethi dread was down. The three randoms on the team couldn’t believe how fast it finished lol

Since your threat level goes up, especially without "stealhing" buffs, does that shift traits from one to the other or do you have to deliberately hit the clickie no matter what for the shift?

Given how meta it is, I'm surprised you didn't touch on Torp builds. Personally, I'm running Intel as primary and Temporal as secondary (for Entropic Rider's 10% chance on torps.) That may change though. I'm currently trying to figure out how to do an unorthodox Tanky-Torp build simply because my Fleet Akira is super squishy when it takes heavy threat (which it does every 60 seconds with its TPDS clicky).

A great trait also Stu is Concealed Repairs with for instance the Placate in 10km, its basically a free heal every 30 seconds with a placate and reduces CD, just wondering for a budget trait I always use it wondering your thoughts? Thanks! P.S. what are thought on Constable with Achilles for DPS? Or is that a more PvP one?

Simple terms for lvl 50-65, you get 1 spec point per lvl, then once you get to lvl 65, each time xp bar fills you get another spec point. MC Stu, if you say anything more then that you will just confuse people

I was always just slotting whatever specializations fit with the ship for example when I run my inquiry since it's a miracle worker/Intel ship I run MR as my primary spec and Intel as my sec. If my ship only has 1 spec seat I'll run that as my primary and pilot as my secondary for the improved maneuvering, barrel roll maneuver and warp core breach immunity it gives. After watching this I'm gonna have to rethink a lot of things. QUESTION, you didn't mention drain builds, do they fall under another builds umbrella or are they so niche you decided not to mention? I run a drain build on my Breen rezereth dreadnought with a few of the Breen consoles and full space set which is why I'm asking. Thanks for the great and very useful content as always.

Get Improved Photonic Officer Trait from Iktomi, get the Somerville for Spore Infused Anomalies( this is your main big one photonic officer is for CD reduce as you don't use Aux2Bat but photonic officer instead), get the Chronos Dreadnought for Exotic Modulation and the others are subjective a great just overall trait is like the Narendas for it builds up 30% damage I believe or 15% over the map for every time you are hit and its for the whole Map not just a certain time period! That should be a GREAT 5, I know stu would pick forsure the first 3-4 and the Husnock has a great science trait too it depends if your gonna use Temporal or not as well tho. As some like specialized officers I love due to it reducing CD and there's a temporal trait I use it reduces temporal traits for every science I use and vice versa really really great! Hope that helps alot!

Watch the Skill Tree one first. The Skill Tree is one of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of the game. Building it wrong can be a real problem too. You will be able to eventually respec for free, but that could take a couple of months or more to get there. Better to drill down on that sooner than later.

i think you might have made a mistake there. the improved versions of the starship traits that you get from the skill trees are from one of the recruitment characters. im not sure if its temporal or gamma recruit, but you get those from a reward box for spending a certain amount of points in the trees of one of those characters. finishing a skill tree just gives you the regular version of that trait.

or not. i saw you really do get the traits halfway through and then the improved versions when you finish the tree. i was certain youd get the improved versions from one of the recruits for some reason. there was definitely something relating to those traits that you got out of one of them.

I always wonder what the point of the ultimate maximizing is in this game. There's not much of a difficulty - in space, at least. In TFO's, I never notice the extra ten percent to anything, as everything blows up before my cannon fire so much as reaches the target. In PVP, even if I run the tankiest build I can come up with - I blow up in *seconds*. So, nah. I upgrade what needs upgrading and I like being effective, but ultimately I tend to just make something that looks cool and works rather well-rounded. Shields, torps, beams, cannons - everything on my boat. Way more fun. So. Run a big cruiser? PILOT! Rock and roll with fire at will is the coolest, most satisfying thing in the entire game.

New players: The only thing I'd suggest is to make sure you put 1 point on both Strategist and Intel before filling out Strategist. You need the 1 point in the specialization before any passive effect will be applied.

Good vid Stu. Even for veteran players. About Cryptic, we can see what they're doing now. Zen exchange has gone trough the roof and its never been over 2 Mil for 500. Also instead they create Dil sinks they even added more free Dil trough Admirality weekend today so they deliberately making things worse! and this is sneaky and forcing you to buy Zen for real money or wait for a month on exchange, maybe even more as those 2 Mil Zen won't go away that easy

They should just put lobi in the phoenix box. Even if it's just 1 lobi per green token. People will dump all that dil, the exchange will recover, and lobi ships will be affordable again.

Why not just cut dil refining to 8k per account per day? Once one character refines non of the others can kinda thing. It was mostly stable when everyone wasn't refining thousands upon thousands of dil a day. It would make me sell zen more often that's for sure
