On the one hand, it's kind of silly, because... having as much info on Starfleet as they do, 8472 likely knows Earth doesn't have a defense against them. (Voyager being isolated and unable to communicate their intel.) However, if they are somehow unsure about a confrontation with the Federation, this speaks of the mindset of 8472: immediately retreat when you don't have a full advantage, then brainstorm and come back with different methods. Stealth, in this case.

Think of it from their perspective prior to the Borg invasion. They were the only thing living in their universe. A new type of life from a completely different type of universe suddenly appears and tries to exterminate them. They stop the Borg invasion and go into the other universe in order to put an end to it once and for all. They find out that place is full of different life forms and the Borg are a collective version of them. Obviously this means that in order to remove the threat completely they should kill everything. A separate collective called Starfleet/Federation is also out to get them and actually has the means to do it efficiently with just one ship. They also notice that the two groups are enemies with each other, but are willing to set aside that in order to focus on the extermination. They call off their invasion and decide to reassess their knowledge of the other universe. First thing is to understand if this Federation is really something to worry about and if it can be removed. Next thing is to check out the local area of where they came in. While doing that they also find at least one other life form that is trying to hunt them down and seems rather good at it. That’s what’s shown of them and it seems perfectly logical.

Species 8472 had a bad experience with humanoid lifeforms, thanks mostly to the Borg. After encountering Voyager, it is more than likely that they gathered their information from the Collective. However, given that their replica uniforms were still early DS9, the Borg had yet to assimilate any Federation vessels with the newer uniforms that were seen in DS9, First Contact, and Insurrection. They also didn't know that Voyager, and later confirmed the Equinox, had no way to contact Starfleet, let alone bring more Federation ships to their position. The first clashes Voyager had with Species 8472 were more akin to knee-jerk reactions. Voyager saw the bioship on the Borg cube, an away team was beamed over to investigate, and Harry Kim got hurt when the team was attacked. All very rational reactions by a being who never encountered such individuals before. It was frightened and angry, and it thought the team was an ally of the Borg. With this episode, a proper understanding was established between Voyager and Species 8472. No other ship crew can say that they entered fluidic space along with purposely going into the Q Continuum, without a Q snapping their fingers.

A major flaw in the makeup of the Federation is revealed here: It's centered on Earth. The correct response to this shortcoming is to expand and diversify and distribute the Federation's fighting power among many planets, and also, spread the cultures and populations among many planets, to such an extent that the complete annihilation of any single planet, or several planets, is not fatal or even crippling to the Federation as a whole. And I point out that only having a single primary shipyard (Utopia Planitia, Mars) for the Federation is a major strategic misstep. The Federation should have not less than three shipyards all capable of producing all types of ships. They should be dispersed widely within the Federation's territorial space. In general, anything the Federation has ONE of, is a problem. A problem that can be addressed by creating more of them.

Unless you suggest that 8472 jump out of fluidic space every so often to attack, I'd have to disagree. DS9 was pretty much set entirely within a specific region with some episodes entirely confined to the station. In contrast, Voyager was a long journey home. The only way it might have worked is if Voyager was entirely travelling through their space and their space would not be interesting enough to do that for an entire series or even more than two episodes. Probably the better Voyager episodes involved them having to traverse hostile alien 'normal' space (Kazon, Borg, Hirodgen) - regions with hostiles but also friendlies, neutrals and quiet areas. And once they were past it, they generally didn't experience much more from the residents of such areas (aside from the Borg who are everywhere of course).

I suppose, in hindsight, it was a good thing Voyageur got lost. They singlehandedly saved earth from at least two catastrophic alien invasions.

that's funny......Species 8472 looks like the Chaos God "Set" from Ancient Egypt, the head shape, the long snout as a mouth and "ears" there is a kid with an extreme bacterial infection that somehow developed the same exact look.

There won't be no invasion, it'll be them putting a 1/2 dozen ships together and taking a sniper shot from space.

Actually that wasn't the problem, the actress playing Janeway was insulted they went the sex appeal route with 7 of 9's costumes. They did eventually get along better.

Given the Lore that has developed for Trek since this episode. Here's a question. At the end of season 3 of Picard, we see they are now scanning during transport for Borgified people & shapeshifters. HAS the Federation finally learned to up their security game enough where they now scan for ALL potential hidden entities that they know of currently. Species 8472 is a prime example, and this episode happend long before the end of Picard season 3. So we have species 8472 Further back than this we have the worm eating things that took over Admiral's and captains in TNG and then theres Picard season 3 Borg & Shapeshifters. (Im sure there is more that i cant remember) IS Starfleet security finally getting the memo that there's ALOT of wolve's in sheep's clothing.

while i get that the federation was at war with the dominion at the time voyager was treking across the delta quaduant, however janeway left one vital flaw: they stated they would purge the galaxy of all life, so think about it, they wouldn't just put a bullseye on earth. bajor, qonos, romulus, and many other homeworlds would be effected in the beta, alpha, and gamma quaduants.

Humans are arguably the most powerful race in the universe (aside from god-like entities), in such a short amount of time, look how powerful they have become.
@quoniam4265 жыл бұрын
Problem is, Voyager and subsequently Earthlings were the only one who could come up with a weapon that would make the 8472'sdefenses worthless. Imagine being part of a superpowerful species that can chew on anything but one day, some puny race comes by and reveals to be the first ones ever to destroy one of yor ships and kill some of your species... You'd consider them as a threat to be delt with ASAP. Apparently 8472 are very coutious in their approach, they could have invaded the Federation months ago and destroyed everything, but as they didn't know if Voyager had informed them about the 8472, they take their time to study their enemy to learn how they think and more importantly how could such a simple species could have come up with a weapon effective against them.
@Dougurasufilm2 жыл бұрын
Even though this scene was pretty cool, I can't help but feel that the idea behind this episode just brings down species 8472 completely. This seems like a Romulan or Cardassian plot if anything. Species 8472 wants to infiltrate Earth? By disguising like humans and learning our culture? That's so "meh". Give me the episode "Prey" over this one any time.
@Turboy652 жыл бұрын
"To defeat them, we must become them." And end up so alien, that your connection to your own species is all but lost? That's hardly a victory for ANYBODY.
@alphanerd72212 жыл бұрын
Romulans and Cardassinas couldn't pull this off.
@DavidKnowles02 жыл бұрын
It because they didn't know that Voyager was stuck in the Delta Quadrant they thought the nano probe weapon was in Starfleet/Federation hands. An any when they last encountered a Federation ship they lost dozens of vessels. They would have considered any open attack on the Federation suicided. Plus their primary goal was to discovered the secret to the Federation weapon.
@Dougurasufilm2 жыл бұрын
@@alphanerd7221 The Federation itself could do this easily, kinda even did with the Ba'Ku, why wouldn't the Romulans and Cardassians be able to?
@Dougurasufilm2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidKnowles0 no it's because this episode was written badly. Now Species 8472 is schemer. Unlike in Scorpion where they were a big invading species infecting other creatures so that they would eat themselves from the inside out. They were scary, they were a swarm of wasps that could take out the Borg. After this they were just "we have to try to understand their culture" dropping any sort of mystique.

You know I have thought about this but what if species 8472 and the founders were the same race in kind of the same way vulcans and romulans were the same race. I mean think about it both species are shape shifters and exist in a way that's really alien to humans and other human Like races. They just evolved differently plus in there natural state they seem to be connected psychic powers to at the very least communicate with each other. That being said I could be totally have no idea what I am talking about.
