In this video Sarah delves into the often overlooked psychological aspects of overeating, offering concrete and actionable strategies to break free from habitual patterns and regain control over your relationship with food.
The discussion begins by emphasizing the connection between psychology and overeating, challenging the conventional advice solely centered on behavior and nutrition. Sarah highlights the importance of understanding and calming the lower brain, where emotions and primal drives, including appetite, reside.
The first key insight involves calming the lower brain by both ensuring adequate food intake and developing the capacity to process emotions effectively. Sarah introduces a fascinating connection between deep sleep and emotional processing, advocating the use of bilateral stimulation - particularly through the simple yet powerful "butterfly hug" technique - to enhance emotional well-being.
The second psychological strategy revolves around shifting the mindset of scarcity. By reframing decisions around food from a binary "yes or no" to a nuanced "now or not now," individuals can alleviate the fear of food scarcity and create a healthier approach to decision-making.
The third stop on the psychological journey focuses on disrupting habitual patterns. Sarah explains how repetitive cycles strengthen neural networks, leading to a sense of inevitability in overeating episodes. To counter this, individuals are encouraged to ask a powerful question - "What happens if I don't eat this food right now?" - prompting the brain to imagine alternatives and break free from the cycle.
The final destination in this psychological exploration is the implementation of reverse psychology. Sarah introduces two approaches: planning to eat more, leveraging the law of reversed effort, and, paradoxically, accepting the possibility of perpetual struggle with overeating, thus releasing the internal battle.
In conclusion, this video offers a holistic and actionable guide to address overeating by exploring the intricate interplay between psychology and behavior. Sarah's unique insights and practical techniques provide viewers with a roadmap to transform their relationship with food, promoting emotional well-being and balanced decision-making.

Another good psychological method is to state positive personalized intentions around weight and food, like…I only eat when I’m hungry, I make healthy food choices, I prioritize protein, I lose weight easily. It gives your mind direction. It works for mood and anxiety as well, like…I’m capable, I’m calm, I’m confident, I like myself, I’m grateful, I’m happy, I’m going to have a great day

my answer for the question was: But then I will not be distracted from myself. Then I'd have to sit with myself who I (at the moment, not always) hate. And that led me to think about why's that I hate myself in this moment and through having a discussion with myself, I came to the conclusion that I can just love myself and being with myself doesn't have to be so hard

I just need to say, you're a very educated and very caring professional in the overeating world. I appreciate your videos. I'm in my 60s. I'm proud to say I come from a family of obesity, and Ive been "around the world" with strict diets, heavy exercising, worked for a gym, ballet, dance, aerobics, became aerobic instructor. But what I did this past 18 years is I create my own program of 10-30 minutes depending on how I feel. I also say with foods: " I COULD have that, but I'm choosing to have something else because I need my energy".

I noticed that sometimes my answer is (to the ‘what would happen’ question) that I can’t breathe, I wouldn’t be able to breathe. It seems that what I really need in those moments is not food, but rhythm…breath work, maybe a relaxing song and swaying my body to the music (when dancing would be inappropriate)…Thank you, and also for the bilateral soothing method - it works!

Sarah, I love how actionable your videos are with lots of practical advice. And at the same time you manage to bring across the complexity of eating challenges, that are not solved by "eat this, not that" - at least not for many people. The older I get the more I see that what we eat can change with age and with the situations we are in (challenges, illnes etc.). And that a "black+white" approach is usually not working well. So thank you for another great video and the hope you give that change is possible - one step at a time!

Very very good ! I have recovered from anxiety by researching & understanding what happens in the brain & body prior to & during a panic attack . By understanding the process I could see it was nothing to be scared of & just a process triggered by thoughts . I learned from Russ Harris to become curious & investigate your thoughts - to recognise them & name them - but I hadn’t worked out how to apply that to food . What you are teaching here is so so good & you are dynamic & fun & exciting & non judgmental in your teaching. Keep up the good work - i love this stuff & you are so good at your job . Thankyou so much

i actually only have trouble with sugar and carbs. If I indulge, I binge multiple servings and have extreme cravings for more for days afterwards. It takes 3-4 days before that goes away and then I'm fine, no cravings what so ever. So, I generally don't allow myself to indulge in the first place. Sugar/carb addict.

The last point you made about finding the middle resonated with me SO much. I do want to recover. I Just don't see either extreme (HAES or diet culture) to be healthy. It's so frustrating that I feel like I have to pigeon hole myself in order to seek help. That I have to be in total agreeance with HAES and body positivity. It seems that's all the therapists in my area jive with. Maybe that's just my eating disordered thoughts coming in and totally disagreeing with that stance. Who knows lol.

Don't keep these foods in the house... worst advice ever: I take my car direct to the closest grocery's. ...
@sarahdosanjh252
@sarahdosanjh252 3 ай бұрын
There doesn’t have to be a one-size-fits all approach. Most people I work with have binge eating disorder or switch between binge and restrict cycles and so habituating these foods to be able to be around them is a part of recovery and making peace with food. The scarcity mindset can be very complex for some people. Of course some people will prefer not to have the foods around and everyone can decide what works best for them. I’m glad you’re doing what makes sense to you. I did a similar thing in my recovery (not having it in the house but ‘allowed’ to go to the shops to get it) before I gradually felt more able to have the foods around without eating them compulsively
@kta0702
@kta0702 3 ай бұрын
I like that advice . Keeping the food in the house makes it easier to eat. So without having we are less likely to wonder in the night grazing . As far as getting in the car and driving to get them. I don’t like being around people that much or spending money a lot so it’s easy for me to not get dressed and drive all the way for temporary pleasures. As far as fast food I can drive past it without an issue. It took a while for me to get to that point but I made it.

Right now, I'm in South Carolina with my family. We are staying at a hotel. A couple of hours ago, my family and I were at a restaurant. I ate some fries, some bread, some salad, some lemonade, and some chicken wings. I got very full right after it. I was so full that I didn't want any Dairy Queen. My brothers got Dairy Queen, but I am still in pain from eating too much. On the elevator, my brother, who is in the Navy, told me that I need to relax and go to the bathroom if I have to. Thank you for the video. My question is this: What would you recommend to somebody who has a history of eating disorders and is in great deal of pain? I do suffer from excruciating pain (fibromyalgia) and seizures on a daily basis (caused by childhood trauma/C-PTSD) and eat/overeat to relieve the pain, both physical and mental. My brain does answer the question "what would happen if I did not eat this food?" with "you will be in pain/you will have a seizure". I am terrified to start eating because I *know* that once I begin, it's almost impossible to stop (I rarely feel full). I live alone and this makes the situation worse because there is nobody to stop me from overeating (or more like, stopping myself because I feel ashamed).

Dear Heart, you sound utterly miserable. Having had similar issues (but nowhere near as severe) it sounds like starting with calming the nervous system and her butterfly technique could be a good place. This therapist and Therapy in a Nutshell channel has a lot of good videos on addressing the brain issues. By the way do you take magnesium supplements? Some people have good success with decreasing the pain I’d FM with it. Also highly concentrated epsom salts baths is said to be a big help. May God bless you with very good and perfect gift from above🤗🙏🥰🌟!

Sarah, I know you took a YTT. So you know about yamas. Did you ever realize that "satya" means "truth" , and it begins like "satiety" ? (Please consider that I'm french and translate from sanskrit to french to english, so I may be not accurate). My problem is sugeri and fati stuff. I eat a lot of vegetables, i walk a lot with my three year old Hauntingdog and i have a big Garden. But my Brain cries for sweets and unhealthy stuff. And if i ask me why, i'll get so nervos and anxious, then mostly i giff in... It's a addiction.
