SPIDER-MAN: Are Doc Ock and the Other Villains VARIANTS in No Way Home? | LOKI Connection Explained

Spider-Man: No Way Home is about to pair up Spider-Man and Doctor Strange (and definitely no other Spider-Men named Tobey or Andrew ;) ). But, since we're talking about the Multiverse here...is there another connection to Loki? Are Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, Electro, sandman, and Lizard actually VARIANTS, and not the villains we've met before? And how will this affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Exactly same character but pulled out from their universes before killed by spidey, essentially making them a variant in the MCU sacred timeline. Like how Loki stole the tesseract and made a Nexus event, this time Dr. Strange casting the spell was the Nexus event.

They are variants now no matter what part of the multiverse they came from since none of them were technically supposed to leave their own universes/realities and travel to this one.

@@fictionfan6252 If I had to come up with an explanation, I would say that when Electro exploded, seeing as energy cannot be destroyed, only transformed, Electros energy dissipated do much that he essentially went unconscious until he got ripped into the MCU, and reformed himself a new body. That or the Arc reactor gives him enough manipulative ability over his form that he can change his appearance at will

Doc Ock's lab was located on the East side of Manhattan, meaning that at the end of the film Doc Ock pulls the reactor into the East River not the Hudson. The East River separates Manhattan from the Bronx and Queens. The Hudson River is on the West side of Manhattan and separates it from New Jersey. That means the bridge fight in No Way Home is taking place on the other side of Manhattan from where Doc Ock died in Spider-Man 2. Maybe that makes it more likely he's a variant who built his lab on the West Side. Alternatively, he came out of the water on the East Side and got a sweater and sunglasses before heading to NJ.

@@yeuxdal There are signs that show they are on the George Washington Bridge. I can't say for certain if that bridge runs over the Hudson River in the MCU (Marvel moves buildings all the time, why not rivers?) But in this Universe the George Washington Bridge runs from the West Side of Manhattan to New Jersey. I read something about Doc Ock's lab being all the way downtown in the Raimi film. The GWB is uptown by the Bronx. If true that is another reason to think Ock didn't materialize on the GWB.

Doc Ock is definitely not a variant. Based on this movie, doc Ock survived the nuclear fusion reactor explosion from Spiderman 2. In one of the tv spots (I think for IGN); doc ock mentions about his machine while fighting Peter Parker on the bridge. He's definitely NOT a variant. But I think electro and green goblin are.

And i think Electro turned back to human looking form by using stark tech to harness the electricity in his body. (Made it helped his hair grow) 😂

I think you are right on. The whole point of having Loki come out when it did was to prepare us for the idea that variants can look completely different or exactly the same. Variants can be wildly different, or just slightly different. JK Simmons' appearance was the first glimpse of this, and now Marvel can do anything they want with previous studios' work. Netflix, Fox, Sony, etc. Cherry pick what you want and discard what you don't. Charlie Cox, take him. Iron Fist, discard.

It’s an interesting theory. Fans were also theorizing from the first trailer that this isn’t the same Doctor Strange because he’s being extra irresponsible with his magic. I also think it’s interesting that Strange is assuming that the “visitors” are because of the botch spell and not because He Who Remains is dead and the timelines are branching. Is No Way Home the start of the Multiversal War?

He Who Remains' death, allowed alternate universes (multiverse) to be created, then Strange botched his spell which ended up bringing characters from those alternates universes to come into HIS universe. Like he said, the concept of the multiverse is something he knows very little, meaning He Who Remains chronologically died recently.

I don’t think the multiverse we see in No Way Home and that was mentioned in Dr Strange, Shang-Chi is the same “multiverse” we see in Loki. Although they are connected by what is known in the comics as the Omni-verse ( collection of all multi verses, universes, mystical dimensions etc.). Also people seem to think that what happened in Loki happens in some sort sequential order with the Mcu reference frame. Once Loki was captured by the TVA everything we see in that series happens outside of the space time of the regular Mcu. From the standpoint of characters in the regular Mcu the effects of Loki already and always happened. I think that The One Who Remains is lying about some of the facts about the “mutliversal war”. I don’t think he is necessarily the original and I don’t think whoever that is simply “met” their variants. I believe they created their variants by trying to screw with the timeline and it spiraled out of control.

When I heard Doc Ock asking “What have you done with my machine?” I started to get worried. I don’t want NWH to overlook Ock’s redemption in Spider-Man 2, he even said “I will not die a monster” so if this is the same Ock moments after that, it makes no sense for him to all of a sudden be evil again and concerned about his machine. I’m aware there could be an explanation for this, maybe the arms are back in control, or he’s been plucked from his universe some moment before he’s redeemed, but I hope NWH actually addresses this and doesn’t just undo the excellent final moment of the character from Spider-Man 2.

When you think about it, every villains can come back to their normal self if Strang push them out of their body and into their astral forms. In his astral form, doc ock is no longer connected to the arms. The goblin is no longer controling Norman Osborn. The guy (idk his name) can be pushed out of his lizard form, just like hulk. The only logical reason I can come up with for Doc Ock is that he was pulled from his universe before he turned good? But then again he seems to know that he died originally so if that's the case then why does he seem evil again? Strange said they "all die" fighting Spider-Man, which isn't true. Lizard (Dr. Connors) and Sandman are alive at the end of their movies and are on good terms with Peter. So some of them could be variants? Idk something isn't adding up.

The variant theory makes perfect sense. That way it wouldn't have to retcon the events of the original movies, and they wouldn't really have to explain how exactly they got there at each point in their respective movie and have it make sense. They also wouldn't need to go into the whole variant idea too deeply, because they have no prior connection with the MCU characters that would need their differences explained. I do hope they introduce new versions of these characters, but I am excited to see more Dafoe Goblin in particular, even if that mask is unbelievably stupid.

I think this is the version of Otto from Spider-Man 2. While he does redeem himself at the end of the fight, this could be a version of Dr. Octavius prior to him learning about Peter’s identity and have it make sense with the continuity. Otto could be stripped out of his reality when he gets electrocuted the second time, for example, and it doesn’t break the narrative. “When he finds out Spider-Man’s identity” is completely irrelevant. Why? Because within moments of jumping from the Raimi-verse to the MCU, he could easily hear a news report (audio only) that Peter Parker is in fact Spider-Man. And he already knows what his Peter Parker looks like, even if he hasn’t seen him unmasked before.

I think all these villians are ones that killed their Spider-Man, and come from a universe were they won, and I think it happen cuz Starnge's botch spell not only brought them to the MCU but altered their time lines, creating parallel universes to the ones Andrew and Tobey come from, that is why sending them back and restoring their time lines would mean they would die instead of their repective Spider-Man.

With a miscasted spell by Doctor Strange, it allowed villains from across the multiverse who knew Peter Parker is Spider-Man to come to the MCU. After having seen the movie, many fans question the villain’s fate who returned to their universes. The way I see it, I feel that the flow of time is complicated and that Dr. Strange’s hit different points in time of the Raimi and Webb Spider-verses. Green Goblin: This one is the most difficult to think about, because we all saw that Norman died being killed by the glider at the end of the first Spider-Man film. It’s unknown if he returned to his prime timeline with his Peter, Otto and Marko given how much time passed after Spider-Man 3. Presumably, the only known point in time that I believe Norman could’ve been pulled from his universe was after his attack on Aunt May’s house and before his battle on the bridge with Spider-Man. If he returned being cured of the Goblin where he last left, it would create a new timeline. Doctor Octopus: Sources from Marvel said that Otto’s story continued from his death at Spider-Man 2. In the film, Otto said he had Spider-Man by the throat, and the next thing he knew, he was in another universe. If taken literally, Otto was pulled from his universe at that time. But for me, I believe that was the Doctor Octopus persona talking because it blacked out and Otto came to his senses and retook control of his mind. When Otto was drowning in the river, I believe Dr. Strange’s spell saved him from dying but it allowed the tentacles to regain control over his mind and the Doctor Octopus persona resurfaced having no memory of his sacrifice. Presumably with how much time passed for his Peter Parker’s timeline, he returned to that timeline with him and Sandman. Sandman: After having been forgiven by Peter Parker, Flint escapes to parts unknown after Spider-Man 3. It can be assumed that after some time passed, Dr. Strange’s spell hit flint Marko and brought him to the MCU. Presumably with how much time passed for his Peter Parker’s timeline, he returned to that timeline with him and Otto Octavius. Lizard: Since after Connors was cured and sent to Ryker’s, Curt still had a patch of Lizard skin on his neck hinting that he wasn’t fully cured. Presumably before the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Curt Connors transformed into the Lizard again and broke out of prison. Dr. Strange found him in the sewers of the MCU, so Connors was probably hiding in the sewers of his native universe after he escaped. Presumably with how much time passed for his Peter Parker’s timeline, he returned to that timeline with him and Dillon. Electro: Max said he absorbed data in Oscorp’s grid before his final fight with Spider-Man. I believe that he came across Peter Parker’s name and was unaware that he and Spider-Man were the same person. When he was being overloaded, I think Dr. Strange’s spell pulled him at the very last second before he was fully vaporized, and the energies of that universe allowed him to restrengthen and what gave him his body back. Presumably with how much time passed for his Peter Parker’s timeline, he returned to that timeline with him and Connors.

The "Sacred Timeline" is just every timeline that doesn't lead to an alternate version of Kang, like a rope made of collective strands. Addition: Other timelines with smaller variations exist within the collective description of the "sacred timeline", so long as the variations aren't so major that Kang is created. This is shown with the timeline of Sylvie, which is technically a timeline without a Loki influencing things because Sylvie was completely removed. That is drastically different from the main timeline, yet it's still a part of the "sacred timeline" once Sylvie was removed because without her the timeline doesn't go in the direction of Kang. Loki and Mobius's actions showed hints towards that with their experiment on Pompeii, where they made some changes with regards to the specific events in Pompeii, but since it was still destroyed overall, it's not so major as to cause that timeline to spiral into Kang's existence. The fact that the "Reset Charges" and "Pruning devices" only remove stuff from timelines also hints towards this, they don't remove entire timelines, just objects that cause that timeline to eventually lead into one that has Kang existing. The Avengers were allowed to modify timelines in their quest for infinity stones because ordinarily each one they modified wouldn't lead into Kang's existence, or wouldn't until the Loki from one of those timelines eventually goes off with Sylvie and creates the Multiverse by killing "He who remains", and going off script.

Just because Tobey and Andrew are variants, it doesn't mean that they didn't live very similar lives to what we saw in their movies. if anything it just means the worlds that their villains are coming from are like "What if..." What if Doc Ock didn't die in that river, what if the Lizard wasn't cured, and so on... The movies all have slight differences from the comic sources so it stands to reason some of them are from universes where slightly different choices were made from the movies, like the fact that Venom existed in Spiderman 3, yet we also have a Venom that never met Spider-man at all til now. whether people watched Loki or not, people can't be so hard coded as to not accept that three different people from three different time lines could all look differently but still be called by the same name or have similar powers. Many of us saw all the movies regardless of the reboots already, so we have to accept it.

I have also considered Doc Oct to be a variant. The main reason being he didn’t know Peter was Spider-Man until just before his redemption and death. So the question is When did he become a variant?

Yeah, he explained that the new costume he is wearing is much more confortable compared to the original one from the 2002 movie, and that "Norman and the Goblin have a few more tricks up their sleeves" this time, "there has been upgrdes on the costume, lets say", so he probably meant that the costume has been rethinked and modernized to allow Goblin to disguise himself and upgrade the armor itself (as we have seen in the trailers and tv spots).

It makes sense that they are slight variants from the the ones we knew since if you look back at the original films there aren't too many places where you could pluck those guys out of the timeline and make it work.
