Spider-Man: Lotus SUCKS

I am at least thankful to this movie for giving me concrete evidence why I can like MCU Spider-Man and reject the fetishized version of a "comic-accurate", Raimi-esque Spider-Man.

At least when Spectacular Spider-Man did its take on the origin story, it was because the Symbiote was trying to use Peter's memories against him.

Here's the thing I'm not even that mad at Gavin he was a kid when he was making this. But here's another question I have. Why in the hell did he have a red carpet premiere for his FIRST MOVIE?! Did the dude even think to go to film School first? Maybe work on some low-budget short films with some friends? Take a freaking skill share class? Something. This is like if Sam raimi directed his first Spider-Man film but had none of his prior experience in horror or anything.

Honestly, it shows how self-centered he was. If this is your first major outing as a professional, you NEVER assume you’re going to be great, let alone better than the seasoned pros who have been in the game 20+ years. Maybe a few things in your project will turn out pretty good, but you should always treat it as an opportunity to learn. Once you start bragging about how awesome you are, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

Listen, I'm not going to begrudge the creators for wanting to tell a darker, more comic accurate Spider-Man movie, especially at a point where the MCU was doing a wildly different take on him (a take I hate but that's beside the point). Where they went wrong was that they only adapted the surface level aesthetics and personality of those original comics without analyzing why they were that way. You can see this in the graveyard scene especially. During the comic, Peter lashes out at MJ in the quiet of his own room, wanting to be alone but MJ stayed any way- Peter called her an uncaring party girl and she stayed to show he was wrong. In the movie, Peter rants and raves at MJ and she just takes it in stride and gets told he's actually super cool and nice. TASM 2 did this story better.

Okay I didn't bring this up before and I promise this is my last comment but Spider-Man isn't really a dark character. You're right he has glimpses of darkness here and there but he's not brooding or edgy. The only other versions of him I can even see being close to that are noir and 2099, but as far as his overall history he's not a sad dude he's pretty happy go lucky. Otherwise he wouldn't crack bad jokes. It's been said before but I think people have really glorified that "guilt" part of his origin to a point where they don't think he can have happy stories. I don't know about you but I'm 100% happy that they didn't go that route with the MCU trilogy not just to freshen the character up but to actually give that support system that he needed. Seriously as much as I love no way home you have no idea how much I cry over that Lego palpatine figure from the death star he and ned built. That was a symbol of their friendship and he had to let it go to make sure they him and MJ were safe. That's tough. Marvel knows what they're doing with the character and I trust them to do good with Spider-Man 4.

You know, even before all this pathetic drama revolving around Lotus, I'm gonna be truthful here, I never was excited for this "fan" film of Spider-Man Lotus when it was first announced and even when the first 2 trailers of it were dropped. I may be a huge spider man fan, but when watching the 2 trailers, I just couldn't get invested that much, I thought that the music choices in the first 2 trailers were so weird and a bit cringe when I listen to it and I wasn't really a fan of Spider-Man lotus taking itself way too "mature, serious, dark or depressing" of a Peter Parker/Spider-Man story, not really my cup of tea, I much perfer Spider-Man to be primarily a balance of fun, lighthearted, emotional and dramatic(it's one of the reasons why I loved the MCU Spider-Man movies and spiderverse animated movies, they honestly the best Spidey movies ever in my own opinion). Overall, I just pass Lotus, it just wasn't good for me to watch the film in my opinion. Weather this is a unpopular opinion or not, I shouldn't care about it, it's really my honest opinion.

I have to ask how in the mother of God did this movie have $100,000 + of a budget and it's still looks so cheap? There's a Spider-Man noir concept film on KZbin with better choreography better costumes better editing. Everything! And believe me you can tell that that film was made with a shoestring budget but it's passion is 100% there. I'm serious check out that short film and then tell me it's not better than lotus. Or heck look at Peters web (the Rodger King fan-made series) the costumes are homemade the acting is cringey but also kind of good, not to mention the action is pretty good. Again you can tell it's kind of cheap but it doesn't matter because again the people that worked on it we're having fun.

Fan films are not free from criticism nor are they excused from lacking quality. In this movie’s case, there’s fan films out there that are better written, acted and produced, some for less and many with less racists and groomers involved.
