Idk how much of the movie is done. But at this point, you have two options: They could never release it and just distance themselves from it from now on(which would be even more disappointing considering people crowdfunded this thing). Or, like you said, put it out regardless of the drama, and let the movie be judged on its own merit. People may downvote it just because of this story now, or might not watch it all together. But at least it would be out and dealt with, and the crew can just leave it in the past and move on to better things.

I told Gavin recently I had a theory that because of some misinformation around the former VFX Artists & the “storyboard artist situation” (the artist we got was fully paid & even came to set) that people might be taking what they image a “god complex director” to be like in their head & placing it on their idea of him. Sadly I saw you do that right in front of me towards the end of this well made video btw & it really breaks my heart. I was a Producer/1st Assistant Director on Lotus for nearly every single day of production & I can say Gavin J Konop is one of the smartest & most collaborative directors i’ve ever worked with. There are so many ideas in the movie that were suggested by someone else on the spot that we used instead. He was so incredibly accommodative sometimes i’d even tell him he was being too nice & lenient about certain things that were negatively affecting the production & that he was the director after all & needed to put his foot down. This being Gavin’s Debut Film he learned a lot about how he wants to be as a director going forward & I can honestly say even on his 1st attempt I still would like other directors I work with in the future to be a similar experience to working with him. I hope anyone reading this that was planning on watching it still does cause so many of the most talented people I know had a hand in making it & it’s the thing i’m most proud of in my life so far.

@@DonnieDaise the screenshot of him saying that he wouldn't pay them is fake. Storyboard artists were offering their job for free at the beginning, once the Indiegogo campaign got success the fans during live Q&A asked to try to pay them at this point, then Gavin accepted and told fans he would have paid them. He never shitted on people he worked with and I'm sure about it (I've worked on Lotus too), sometimes happened discussion but they were only about production decisions and if someone had little troubles he didn't cause them intentionally. So during production all the crew has been respectful and gentle to others, the screens from the past are very disconnected from the production of the movie. If someone in the VFX got nervous or disappointed is also because they had discussion eachother because the organization of VFX needed to be better. That's all

I'm glad someone else from production came out to explain things. I'm not saying we have to justify his behaviour, but there's a lot of misinformation spreading, fake screens and fake stories about behaviours during production etc etc. Glad I'm not the only one spreading a good experience had during the production. As much the racist and hateful stuff from the past isn't justifiable we also have to disconnect the question from the movie because they aren't related at all.

As someone who's also studying filmmaking currently, hearing all of this focus in the experience of making media instead of only the whole controversial stuff was great and the anecdotes you told felt really familiar to me x'd Something i really felt in my experience was that people in this medium, especially those who seek to be directors tend to have a lot of problems with their ego, and a lot of times during our projects and exercises there were always someone who put themselves above anyone else and treated us in a condescending way or even like some form of "lesser creators", and sadly, the higher the expectations and i guess potential from the student were, the worse they would end up acting against their peers. And honestly i always got that same impression from looking at this fan film and the director way before the controversy, when looking at other of his interactions like that weird rant he did some time ago about What if's version of Spider-man or other adaptations of the character, and while i'm almost sure that me having such impressions at the time was kinda unjustified, it felt truly weird to see how to some extent that ended up being true, or almost true i really don't know at this point

Funny, the film school story about that egotistical student rings true for me too. I recently finished my time at film school (yay) and for our final projects one of my roles was doing a behind the scenes documentary on the making of one of the films. (Directing, shooting and editing the documentary) the writer/director of the project is massively egotistical and at times quite rude. And we had a lot of issues with the production even before shooting mostly out of our control, actors dropping out, weather, covid etc. And then we finally get to shoot it and the film falls apart basically. Everything is super disorganised and things start going wrong and on our 2nd day of filming the lead actor (a last minute replacement I believe due to the previous choice being unavailable) quits, over issues with the script and disorganised nature of everything. And of course I'm just there documenting all of this and it was honestly really interesting to see the director sort of have everything just fall apart in front of them and be sorta taken down a peg. And then they had to figure out what to do instead and they made a music video. And I obviously interviewed the remaining cast members and the director and producer and asked them about their thoughts on what happened and of course the director made it all about themselves despite the fact it impacted the rest of us too. I probably ended up with the best situation honestly, made my job of making the documentary a lot easier.

It's not uncommon for that to happen, I mean, fuck, people with big platforms enable the use of certain words through exposure. Look at Idubbbz, Filthy Frank, etcetera. People can joke around with those things, it's not really aimed to hurt anyone imo, it's just cringy jokes made in the heat of the moment, people laugh, it goes by, no one really gives it a second thought. Should they? Probably, yeah, but then again, shouldn't the people feeling offended by jokes made between close friends, not meant to ever be seen by other people also give that a second thought? A spiteful and jealous 15-year-old derailing this project is the ultimate buzzkill that makes me actually have some sympathy for the “exposed” people involved with the project. This wasn’t revealed by one of the fellow cast/crew members or by someone seeking true justice against the insensitive statements. This was a childish little brat who was mad that his “hero” outgrew him and wanted revenge. All the bs about not seeing the problem at the moment and such is just a method of covering himself from blame. It’s no coincidence that he held onto those screenshots for 6 years and only *just* decided to release them. If he truly cared about the things that were said, he would’ve never let the project progress as far as it did, instead of waiting for the anticipation of its release to build

So in summary: Words hurt, boo-hoo, two guys got cancelled for things they said when they were younger and the people that exposed them blew it out of proportion and now their lives are ruined. People memeing about those tweets can't detach from the actual film. No physical harassment or violence, just a bunch of old dumb tweets. First world problems in the modern day, lol. However, not paying the storyboard artist is not okay. I don't want to dismiss some of the things Wayne and Konop have said, but other actors have done far worse to warrant disdain like with what happened to Amber Heard or Ezra Miller.

*WHO'S THE REAL HATEFUL PERSON?* The host of the presentation was 100% correct when he said it's all about how you treat people. That's how you can tell if you want to work with someone or not. But I still wouldn't want to ruin someone's life if I found out they treated someone mean using only words. In fact I tell my children do not ever give someone power over them and show them that they are upset by words used. When you do that the asshole who used the words wins. Anyway... I do not believe that a 15-year-old wrote that letter and I do not believe that they kept it since they were 9 years old. And no I didn't say that I don't believe that's possible because of course it's possible. But I guarantee you we will not see proof in any way shape or form, not evidence, but proof; that a 15-year-old wrote the letter and was bothered by it so much and kept all this pent up rage from age 9. We live in a world where people are insensitive. I grew up as a kid, teenager and now I'm in my late 40s and I still get racist stuff said to me; some of it from people I am friends with and some from people I love. I have also said things that weren't exactly savory, also to people I love. However I come from a time and live a life right now where I am way too stressed out with real life stuff and way too busy with my family and with my job to be upset by words that someone said LONG AGO, especially when they were a child. I think this subject is so stupid and embarrassing of a thing for this many people to be in an uproar about to the point of trying to cancel an entire project that was made of someone's lifelong passion and dreams. More, I guarantee you the main goal of this takedown has nothing to do with bigotry of any kind and has to do with jealousy and hatred because there is a certain sector of people online who basically come to the point of orgasm when they can try to ruin someone's life. Those people do not have a busy life. Those people do not have families that they take care of. Those people do not have jobs that they are constantly busy with which have a lot of responsibility etc. If any of what I said wasn't true then they wouldn't be so mean and hateful. THINK ABOUT IT; have you gone your whole life never forgiving anything anyone has ever said to you and just try to ruin their life? The answer is no unless you are a psycho. THINK THINK ABOUT IT; have you ever been so hurt and bothered by someone who you will never meet your whole life, saying something about a demographic quality that you happen to share? So upset that you want to destroy them in every possible way save from murder? Of course not unless you are a psycho. After all what kind of a hateful person do you have to be to make that much of an effort to try to take someone else down???

The worst punishment someone should receive for words they used as an adolescent/teen is “you shouldn’t have said that when you were younger”. A majority of young people don’t understand the things they are saying and the consequences that could come with it, until they are older and can reflect on it. I’d compare it to watching a shitty movie as a child, and enjoying the hell out of it- then rewatching it as an adult and feeling the shame of once enjoying a movie that you now realize is absolute garbage.

Sounds like the director had a massive ego problem, and that alone would have ruined the experience for all those involved. But it's incredibly ridiculous to me that a project based on Spider-Man of all characters is the one plagued by cancel culture. People can make mistakes. They can do dumb and stupid things and they can hurt people. Some people are so angry at the word and apathetic to other people's problems that they let a mugger run free and kill their uncle. How does no one attached to this project or who is a fan of this project and the character recognize the main lesson of the entire franchise? I wonder would people exiling an actor for things he said years ago in ignorance treat Spider-Man the same way over Uncle Ben? Peter Parker made mistakes. Massive ones that hurt those closest to him. And he spends every day of his life trying to make up for those mistakes and trying to change and be a better person. Would you deny calling him a hero, despite all those he's saved, because one time in the past he did the wrong thing? I don't. And I wouldn't. It doesn't make racist language excusable by any means. But to believe that people can't change, grow, and learn is just as ignorant as that wrong behavior.

He would through a fit because the choreography we made wasn't to his liking for being too fast and want us to come up with another fight had way through shooting in about an hour. I've always said this: Separate the art from the artist. Not only that, but the fact that these things that people are pissed off about happened decades ago makes it all the more absurd. Can't people change? Is redemption no longer a thing? Sure, what they both said wasn't right, but that comes with the territory (immaturity, upbringings, etc.). They have no excuse, but they've pretty much facilitated the exposure of their past. The guy who posted this, the literal child who leaked the messages is more immature than they were for holding a grudge for so long. The motives of the leaker weren't even altruistic, he just knew that people would be angry enough that they'd shit on Warden and Konop. Besides, if Warden and/or Gavin abandoned the kid so easily, that just begs the question: what did HE do that made him worthwhile to any of them? Little to nothing, given the circumstances. As for the "influence" Matt received, it's all a chain. It's stupid to blame him for his upbringings, that's like judging someone for their race (does that ring any bells?). Once again, I repeat: separate the art from the artist.

honestly, the internet just makes everything worse sometimes. the man just wanted to make a fan-film, based on his favorite superhero. but no, there had to controversy. I'm still gonna watch this because, I feel that I will enjoy SPIDER-MAN: Lotus despite all of the drama behind it. Gavin put a lot of thought into his project, it would awful to see it go to waste. So for anyone out there who sees this comment, please go see spider -man lotus when and if it comes out.

They all deserved imo, feel sorry for the people working on it that were innocent tho. Also people need to realise that not all of this was years ago, some of the Gavin and other actors stuff were reeeeaally recent.

Yikes is all I can say. How tf did they find those messages on a bunch of effectively nobodies ? No offense to them, but they aren't Tom Holland or Toby maguire level famous not even close, so how the fuck did people find those messages? Holy shit.

I don't really get why people got this upset at them. Yes, it was some really racist stuff. And yes they should take accountability over it. But they said this when they were in middle to high school, while I get that isn't what most people would do, teenagers do and say the dumbest and most fucked up things. Like 4 years between 15 and 19 is a huge difference in term of maturity. That being said, yeah I'd probably still watch it. If I'd say no because I feel conflicted about the director or actor, then I'd have to say no to like 70% of all films because some people who worked on those films did some really henious stuff

Honestly the movie has left me with so many conflicting feelings now I don’t know how to feel. It’s going to be hard to separate the art from the artist with this one considering how personal it was for the creator.

I remember when the first official poster came out and people started to say that the movie is too white and boring. I first thought thats because the adapted the pre Miles era well i was wrong.

Even though I've had this problem and all this controversy, I still don't think that all the main characters being white is a problem if they were that way originally. But yeah, no one expected all this to be revealed from the production guys, and to have such compromising statements...
