Controversial comment of the day: your 20 yard pin is useless for an open country hunting bow. 5 pin slider here, 30-70 yards. Closer-in shots might be 2" high.

Right on. Stopped using a 20 yard pin years ago, even for 3D. If you’re western hunting it just makes sense to start at 30 yards. Just like you said, anything closer than 30 and you’re just a little high.
@brianstewart88122 ай бұрын
@@richardfiske6311 I agree that for western hunting probably does make more sense to start at 30 but I like having my 20 still just because I tree saddle hunt whitetail and most shots are 15 to 30 yards I shoot a 2 pin slider starting at 20 and can dial out to 120 so that works for me for now until I can hunt out west then my views may change
@thenameiwantedwastaken2 ай бұрын
Depends what and how you hunt. Australian Flood Plain Pig hunting, I leave my top pin set to 20. 90% of my shots are between 20 and 30 in that scenario

Agreed! Top pin 30yards. Shot my deer this year at 10yards and it only went 40yards.

I wish more companies made four pin sliders. I do the exact same thing. 20 30 40 50 for hunting and use the slider for anything further 3D wise.

I agree with some other comments on here about having .010 or .015 pin size options. My Spot Hogg has .019. With astigmatism in my dominant eye, pins show up as a bad glare/halo in lower light for me and it’s hard to tell exactly where the pin is in the halo. I’m wondering if a smaller pin might help that out a bit. But great video guys!
@Blindvanish2 ай бұрын
it absolutely does, I have astigmatism myself and I grabbed a sight with .010 pins and it did help I'd say the starburst I see is about a third to half smaller

I run a 396 grain setup for whitetail out of my 29:5 62 pound Mathew’s nocam the spines a 350 black eagle carnivore I believe it’s a 7.8 gpi with the factory insert and a 100grain broad head I get good pass thru but after 65 yards I’m starting to have a wider group I think I need to go to a 300 spine in the same shaft for my longer range shooting but I only shoot that far for fun

Hey Dan. A few months ago you made a video on how after TAC you were in a slump until you realized you had a soft anchor point. I am dealing with the same thing and I tried searching in your videos but I’ve never seen something where you directly talk about proper anchoring. Is that something you could do? Maybe talk about how when you recognized your draw length needed extending it helped? Just a thought. Thank you.

More 4 pin sliders would be great. I"m shooting a 5 pin Landslyde and keep debating on trying to pull one of the pins out. I think being overspined with a modern compound bow is basically negligible. Yes, at longer distances, you might not see as tight of a group as an optimally spined arrow, but I don't think the majority of people are good enough shots for it to really matter. If you shoot a quality arrow, with a reasonable fixed blade or mechanical broadhead, your bow is tuned, and you're consistent, I think you should be able to get that setup to group within hunting distances.
@andrecancilla49012 ай бұрын
If being too stiff mattered the best 3D archers wouldn’t be shooting a .100 spine gold tip triple X.

I absolutely love all of my black gold sites. They need to do something about their indicator needles. You can’t get enough travel out of them without bending them. I probably have 20 more yards at least 10, but I can’t because I would bend my indicator needle.
@charleslefebvre55152 ай бұрын
I agree about those 2 issues BG needs to look at. The ring can be a pain to properly adjust. They do need to change how the wheel works. I think they need to move away from the polymer they're using and go to full aluminum for the mechanism.

I thought the 5 grains per pound was so you don’t essentially dry fire the bow by having not enough weight of the arrow?
@clintonmoore10702 ай бұрын
5gpp came from ibo/asa competition because you had people shooting 90# bows with 400 grain arrows to get the flattest trajectory.
@bnelsonmedia2 ай бұрын
@@clintonmoore1070 sure, but there has to be some minimum arrow weight for the sake of safety. 1gpp (obviously on the extreme side) would basically dry fire and blow up the bow. Manufacturers don’t give a damn if you have bad arrow flight, the care that you don’t blow up your bow by shooting too light of an arrow and then trying to get a warranty claim for it
@clintonmoore10702 ай бұрын
@@bnelsonmedia every manual on the market states the warranty is limited to manufacturing defects and doesn't cover dry fires or defects from aftermarket strings/cables. The only company I know of that covers dry fires is mathews, and that's only once. I've seen a crossbow shoot a bolt that the insert had pulled out a shot before, essentially shooting a 300gr bolt with a 165# draw weight. It derailed the string and shot fine after words. Speaking of that, the excalibur rev x is 325# draw weight shooting a 250gr bolt (+100gr fp). That is a 1.07gpp setup, so... maybe it's fine?
@bnelsonmedia2 ай бұрын
@@clintonmoore1070 the manuals also state if you shoot less than 5gpp, your warranty is void, since they consider that basically dry firing the bow. I know nothing about crossbows, nor is what Dan and Josh were talking about related to crossbows. So maybe they have different guidelines from the manufacturers.

Single pin is better than a wad of 3-5 pins. Taped 20 to 75, since 76 yard pin and farther drop the sights to close to the arrow. Often dial the sight to 30 yards when i am going to be in the woods or 60 yards in open fields, but not in tree stand on the tree line. Woodland range is within 20 yards to 40 yards before too many trees and brush come between the deer and me. Open field more times I am going to be hundred or yards out, stalking within 60 yards of a herd or wherever I set up, ground blind, natural blind or just simply sitting on a folding chair, deer will come in from 100 to 60 before getting sus pf their surrounding. I got within 15 yards of deer by stalking, but usually around 30-40 yards they catch something that make them uneasy. Often paper tuning and walk back tuning where you adjusting quite a bit will indictate arrow too stiff or too weak. The chart provided by manufactures are great reference point. But you got to shoot the arrows. Tearing left on a right hand bow after adjusting rest a few increment for left hand tear, too weak of spine. Tearing right after a few increments of correction for right hand tear, too stiff. To adjust arrow dynamic spine, add or reduce weight. Or cut fractions of an inch on both ends of the arrow to stiffen it.

This discussion on spine v grains per inch is no different now than 20 or 30 years ago... the bow manufacturers stipulated a 5gr per lb draw weight to insure people weren't causing damage to the bow limbs/cams/strings, and was not about potential damage to the arrow. It has always been about getting the right spine for the draw weight/arrow length/point weight so that the arrow could properly fly out of the bow when considering arrow flight. Similar to high FOC and heavy arrows often suggested by click-baiters online, arrow weight has little to do with pass-through shots. The fad of heavy arrows with single bevel heads and high FOC comes from more and more people taking bad shots and trying to compensate for their lack of patience, poor technique, etc. In Texas back in 2014, several of us archery shop owners sat with Mike E, Joe J, Don D and we discussed the sight stripping issue, bad rest cord clamps, and a great quiver... I agree it has been way too long past that discussion with no change on the sight issue. This year I had my first personal failure, during an elk hunt, and it cost me a mature 6x6 elk at 42 yards.
