Splatterhouse was originally released to the arcades by Namco in 1988. As far as anyone knows it was a relatively obscure game in the United States, but there are persistent and unsubstantiated rumors that the game was banned due to its violent content. Soon the game would be ported to the PC-Engine, and then the PC-Engine port of would become one of the most iconic and important games for the TurboGrafx-16’s early game library. Oddly enough, the game was shipped with a self-imposed warning label that predates the ESRB rating system by several years and this clever piece of marketing is most likely the source of the supposed controversy surrounding the game.
The truth is that no one really cared and few people ever owned a TurboGrafx-16, making the violent imagery in the game an irrelevant concern. However, Splatterhouse for the TurboGrafx-16 was indeed a good game and full of interesting surprises that would have made it one of the best games of the time period. The following is our in depth overview and review of Splatterhouse, easily on the best games every released for NEC’s doomed console in the early 90’s
Thanks for watching dudes!
