This especially important with forest axe sized axes. Mine is 2.1 lbs. 22 inches. And it can be dangerous to split with. Especially considering that is vintage sweedish steel. It's like a 2 lb razor blade. I like laying the wood down. Splitting it from the side. Only cause I rarely find a good anvil for vertical splitting. But I have lots of log pieces to lay a piece on, and split it.

It's also safer to use a real splitting ax that has a longer handle than these little limbing axes.
