I am on my fourth day of no pain pills - finally. Was able to walk outside in the snow today. I am doing mild stretches and message with my knuckles. That seems to help it all relax. This was so helpful, Maryke, thank you! You helped me identify the cause. Clam shells and leg lifts! I started doing them in recent weeks and it was after that when the lateral hip pain started. Another KZbin channel by two well-known PT guys actually RECOMMENDED doing stretches for this lateral hip pain! Well I've learned from past experience with those two to always question their advice and do more research since I've found some of what they say to be questionable, very general, and even a bit careless at times. Anyway, I've stopped doing the leg stretches and clam shells because you make perfect sense and I now know that this led to my problem. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I had this some years back. It started on day 4 of my holiday abroad. No idea what I did to start it off. Went to Physio when I came back and not much difference. I had the cortisone injection at the Physio after my doctor recommended him. He went in and out with the needle to cover different spots just tiny amount of cortisone used. The pain went quite quickly and it's never come back thank goodness.

Thank you Maryke. Very informative and exactly what I needed to hear right now, since my ultrasound has come back positive for bursitis. It’s 31st of December and the physio isn’t back till the 4th. Im back at work on the 9th and want to make sure I give myself the best opportunity to be able to walk by then. Wished I watched this earlier as I have aggravated my bursitis by trying to stretch the area to the point where later that day I couldn’t walk, stand or sleep without feeling extreme pain. I will try the ball massage method against the wall to help sooth the surrounding muscles. Hadn’t I of watched this video today, I’d still be trying to stretch it out 🤦♂️ Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏

Although I have gotten, I believe, a correct diagnosis of hip bursitis by my physician, seen several physios and explored numerous videos on the subject, this video is gives me by far the most thorough and comprehensive information on my problem thus far. Now I am ‚armed‘ with enough information to review my habits to see if some are causing the pain, to avoid certain movements and postures, and can develop a game plan for my treatment. I am currently in Thailand, where I am undergoing acupuncture for various health issues. The acu doctor has included needle treatment surrounding the sore hip, not directly on it. Ive been astounded that it seems to be helping-your mention of dry needling/acupuncture as being effective for some helps me confirm that the slight improvement is due to the recent acupuncture. Still not sure if my case requires strengthening or releasing….will try out some things. Thank you

Following morning when I woke up my hip was very painful. I had physio it got better. Alas I went for a walk up hill for 30 minutes in June and had an awful pain in my hip again. I had another appointment with the physio in July but a week before that I fell down the stairs and broke my ankle on the same side. 8 weeks with my leg elevated above my heart and an operation on my ankle! My ankle is fine now but still my hip still painful. I am seeing a physio, he gave me lots of exercises, it's finally getting better. Hormones can play a role - often in those cases it is actually in combination with gluteal tendinopathy then as well. Tight hip flexors are unlikely to affect it. But any other things that increase pressure there can cause it for example doing lots of house work or gardening when you're not used to it or walking +++ or standing while hanging on one hip etc.

Thank you Maryke, I really hope that you see this comment. I have watched so many of your videos in the last year since a metatarsal injury last year. In the last 3 weeks alone I have injured my shoulders with too many handstands over a 3 day period, 3 weeks ago I injured my right plantar fascia by overstretching climbing in my window because I couldn't use my arms to pull myself up. That plantar issue has lead to me leaning on my left side and walking/ trying to jog with a limp for 3 weeks in order to protect the right foot, (I have dogs so it's difficult to rest). My left bursa finally had enough of the 3 weeks of friction and abuse, I had a slight stumble against a wall on Wednesday after running 1km with a limp, no impact to that area but it's like it just exploded internally as I leant funny. So it is a little like sudden injury mixed with 3 weeks of repetitive strain on the bursa. I don't typically walk or lean into one leg, only for the plantar injury. I run regularly barefoot shoes with no issues. I'm on day 4 of the bursa injury and it is much worse than day one. Is ice of any use? I haven't iced because I see so much conflicting info. I have attended physio 2 weeks ago but this just happened. I'm at the stage something helpful aggravates another problem. It has spread to my lower back and some sciatica. Stretching only helps my back but completely flares the bursa. Thank you for that info in your video.
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
Using ice is absolutely fine - especially when you are in this much pain kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZjMh3evrZamo6s I think you need to see a physio or doctor again for assessment of what actually happened because it sounds as if you could have torn something - it may just be the bursa but it could be a tear or actually a back injury if you have sciatica. Also consider using a walking stick or crutch if you have one to just take some of the weight off that leg for a few days - it can often make a big difference - but 2 sticks may actually be better to keep you straight rather than leaning over.

In a case like yours, I would make sure that you strengthen your legs properly to the point where you can do split squats and shallow single with weight and shallow single leg squats without pain and then ease back into running. Really focus on running form and slowly building the mileage. Also allowing at least 1 or even 2 recovery days between runs.

@@SportsInjuryPhysio Thanks! I've just been using the elliptical and lifting, stuff abductor/adductor machine, squats, deadlifts, calf raises, leg curls, and some hip flexor stuff aswell. I'll probably try to start running on the 20th, and really ease into it only 2 days of running per week at no more than 2 miles and not too fast either, I'm not gonna up my pace by more than 10 seconds per mile avg per week, I tried 40 seconds per mile per week last time and I also upped my mileage like 20% per week, which was probably also a mistake because it was my first month of running.

After treatment for osteoarthritis for low back pain that has radiated into my calf and without much success, my doctor has now decided to try an injection for bursitis (as he's noticed on my hip x-ray). I've been really apprehensive about this since I had four spinal injections last year. I can still walk around the block, although just barely, but you've explained this far better than my doctor has. I often get the impression in the doctor's office that I'm being rushed. This video gives me the time I need to really understand all this. I appreciate this a great deal. Also, as far as exercise is concerned, I've been using a stationary bike each day for 1/2 an hour. I wonder if this is a good idea. I don't notice increased pain from it and since I have trouble standing for more than 15 minutes and/or walking for very long, this has been my only form of exercise. But I don't want to think I"m making this worse. Something to ask the doctor about I suppose. I just didn't consider this harmful before.
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
If an activity (like cycling) does not increase your pain during or after you do it, then it is usually OK to continue with it. Movement is important so don't cut it out if you feel it is OK for you but do check with your doctor as well.
@lifecloud2 Жыл бұрын
@@SportsInjuryPhysio Oh thank you for this. The cycling doesn't increase my pain during or after but as the pain grows steadily worse over time, I'm just trying to pin down what the heck I'm doing that's involved here. I've switched from cycling to walking each day for between 15 minutes and half an hour. I just decided to experiment and see how this change will affect this pain. But thank you for your thoughts here. I love my stationary bike (it's a recumbent bike) and I think now that after a break from it I'll go back to it. My doctor is treating the pain with injections and medication. I want to get to a point where that's no longer needed. So far, so good. No medication lately; injections have stopped.

Thank you for all the information, this is new for me and it actually happened after I visited a chiropractor even though he won’t admit it but I was ok until that day, anything else special treatment I should do? Thank you.

I can't really know what treatments are right for you without actually having assessed you - the only other thing that usually help most people is not to stretch it too much: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpnVemN-j8igptk If you want help with your rehab and an exercise plan, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. You can read more about how the online consultations work here: www.sports-injury-physio.com

Thank you for the great explanation. My hip “specialist “ did not explain any of this and it was very helpful understanding where my pain is actually coming from and how to treat it. 👍

What a great bedside manner, so informative & clearly explained.. and a really great idea for an online physio practice. I realise "in hindsight" and confirmed by your video, that it was my 'well-intentioned' stretching (on 2 different occasions) that caused hip bursitis pain to go into absolute throbbing overdrive.. I get it now.. no more stretching until things settle down, and even then .. go easy. I also think if you stomach sleep with 1 leg 'up'.. all night long.. that could be another habit that would be contributing to this condition..

Thank you so much!!🙏 Having seen this video I believe I can finally resolve my lateral hip issue. It has intermittently plagued me for years. Your video is the best of many I have seen on the subject and was also more helpful than the few practitioners I have visited.. As they say, “Knowledge is power.” Much gratitude & respect..

Thank you. I have had chronic hip bursa inflammation and pain. I've been put through physical therapy which made me do stretches, all causing me much more pain.

Excellent explanation! I have been suffering from very painful hip bursitis when I walk after a left knee replacement (full). Is this common in your experience and what has been the resolution? I have two orthopedic surgeons recommending a bursectomy.

This is very helpful and you made it clear what is bursitis all about. In fact, you clearly explain the pros and cons of strengthening and also the best type of exercise you could look for. Moreover, you made it clear, how to understand your problem. Indeed, i am still suffering from this even though i do a lot of abduction and adduction exercise. I think strengthen exercise could get worse and the best is isometric exercise. That helps a lot though.

thank you for the informative and useful video, I suffered this bursitis pain for 3 years, met the doctor so many times, but now I find it, I have taken a dose of Anti-inflammatory this week, it works very well, the pain disappeared, but I still find a long term solution to end it. Hope everything will be ok,

@@vivianeraw8448 I would say, Yes, I find out that drinking Tumeric with black pepper everyday can eliminate the pain from bursitis. I started from 2 years ago, and now I feel free from pain, I even play football again after 3 years.

I’ve been in the Hawaiian hula dancing classes for the past 3 years. We would practice dancing once a week and sometimes we would do performances but lately I’ve noticed that my right hip is starting to feel very sore and it get worst and worst after the dancing session. I truly aware that the cause of my hip pain is from the dancing due to the nature of the dance it require lots of hip movement. I’ve done lots of stretches to loosen up my muscle and hopefully to minimize the pain but the pain will come back especially after the dance workout! I just hoping that I don’t have to quit what I love to do. 😭 I would definitely try the ball massage hopefully it will reduce the pain on my right hip.
