@@ИльяГостеев-ц9э 0-17 in shootout attempts is still a gigantic dangit, and I’d argue even more embarrassing than going 0-14 in total shootouts. The only previous time a team lost 3 shootouts in a row without scoring was Florida in 2011 and they went 0-9. 0-17 in 3 straight shootouts is something we may never see again in our lifetimes, especially when Vegas was in the clutch and fighting for the playoffs. Had they even won 2/3 shootouts, which shouldn’t have been tough given how good Thompson was in them, they would currently be just one point back of Nashville, and 2 back of Dallas with the tie breaker.

It's all because the ref had a terrible angle on the play, he was in awful position. From his angle, all he probably saw was Hoffmans stick coming down hard and then the stick dropping. He didn't see where he hit Haulas stick.

couldn't agree more. i used to love hockey until i got a big concussion while playing in high school, at which point i just stopped caring altogether. Dangle's videos caught my eye in the recommendations a couple years ago while Babcock was coaching the Leafs and got me back into it again. He talks hockey in a way both new and familiar hockey watchers can understand, and it's a rare skill to have.

Sabres fan of almost 36 years, here. What Jack did on that play was what all the Sabres did while he was there. I can't count how many times the Sabres retrieved a loose puck on the boards and attempted a no-look pass or clear like that only for it to result in a turnover and a goal. What was even more boggling was the fact that it was never corrected in the six years Jack played in Buffalo. I cannot tell you how nice it's been to watch that particular bad habit die this season for my Sabres.

On Haula's PS: I'm pretty sure Steve is just being silly for the sake of being silly, but I actually like that the NHL has hard defined rules for stuff like this. If the puck stops motion after it has started, the play is over. Also, the puck has to completely cross the goal line to count as a goal. It doesn't matter how "little" Marchand moves the puck any more than it would matter how "little" of a puck still hasn't crossed the goal line. Any amount counts, since that's where we draw the line. Anything that is left up to the judgment call of the refs is bound to have issues, especially in hockey where the minutia of millimeters is sometimes the difference in a fast-paced full-contact sport with 100 mph pucks. If I want a sport where people just give me their feelings about who is the best on the ice, I'll watch figure skating.

I agree, these 2 are not the same in my eyes. Puck movement has always been the decisive factor, and there was no question about that in here. I mean Haula went back, got the puck, and was left with less options with speed and room than he had before. What on earth could be wrong with that?

Agreed. Though I see Steve's point about how similar the two events were, there has to be a definitive "line" of legality. Without such, it's left to interpretation and Steve of all people will tell you how well the refs interpret situations. Marchand's play and Haula's, while very similar, were on opposite sides of the established line, and the existence of such is important to take any kind of competition seriously. Without that, we might as well save a couple hours and just ask the refs who wins. The only potential fix I could see happening is changing the rule so that the forward progress of the puck AND player must continue.

I think it's a little silly to watch Fleury misplay the puck like he did in that clip. It's going to be so satisfying though to watch him enjoy some play-off hockey while Vegas watches from the sidelines. I'm torn between feeling that he was fortunate to have been traded away from a team that couldn't make the play-offs, or was it karma coming back to bite Vegas for trading away the face of their franchise in such a secretive dirty way. 🤷‍♂️

As a Caps fan, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that I’m scared for the playoffs. Our starter, Sammy, is incredibly inconsistent and we never seem to use VV in important games/ games against better teams. In my opinion Vanecek is a much better goaltender and we need to take advantage of what we have, while we have it.

It's simple: There has to be a Start and an End to a Penalty Shot. And the Penalty Shot starts, when the Puck is touched by the player and ends, when it's either in the net, being saved by the goalie, or misses the goal. Simple and most of all: it leaves no room for interpretation.

Another rule they implemented for the shootout is that once the puck starts moving forward it cannot stop or move backwards. This was to prevent the spin move player started using during shootouts. Not sure if this also applies for penalty shots or not.

That penalty shot on Hoffman was dumb. He did "slash" the stick, but he only made contact with the blade, so that should have been allowed. I'm shocked Steve missed the other Dang It in that game when the Bruins had 8 or 9 players on the ice and yet they didn't get a too many men penalty.

I think what made it penalty shot was: from refs angle it propably looked like slash, especially when Haula dropped his stick to avoid tripping penalty, because his stick went between Hoffmans legs. That was series of bad luck for Montreal. Point is I see why it was called, but it shouldn't have. That is just something that happens in hockey and in cases like this it can be infuriating. There are many cases when people want to hang the refs on situations like this. That is why I like the ref cams. It allows people who might not think about "what it looked like from ref POV" to see why it was called (in cases it maybe shouldn't have been called).

@@akareim2845 Whilst I agree to some degree, that is kind of hard to find the line for game not lasting 7 hours because of constant video checks. I would think most players coaches and even hockey fans prefer these humane errors to be part of the game. Even though sometimes it ends up infuriating you.

@@teemup9247 there is few ways to ensure that coach won't abuse that rule. In Volleyball, for example, they have a limits of 2 contest call per set if the contest doesn't work. So they could limit it to 1 per game and if they fail, they have a second penalty like an usual contest call! Refering was so bad this year, that i think a rule like that would have help a lot in the end.

I feel that the rule makes sense because as soon as you move that puck, it's in play. So, if you mess up the approach, that should be invalid and if you don't move it it's fine. You put in a 15sec time limit to have to touch the puck or the shot is waived off to stop any stalling or mind games. Not that dumb imo. Ever rule has those moments where the rule applies but is unnecessary, but the jurisdiction of that rule has to start somewhere.

Pretty sure the reason for the call is that the puck has to continue forward momentum, meant to stop spinorama moves, but this is just a consequence of it. If you change the rule you have to disallow those sorts of moves in a different way

@@chriswaight1460 Rewrite the rule so that once the player passes the red line, he needs to maintain forward motion. If you have to stop to go back to the puck, your shot attempt is over. A similar rule applies in soccer where a player taking a penalty shot can't "stutter" their kick; in both cases, the goaltender is thrown off by the staccato rhythm of the shooter.

@@tiladx i gotta disagree with that logic on account that a hockey shooter is skating the puck. And you are specifically allowed to mess with timing by changing your speed, taking a wide line. Etc. As long as you maintain forward momentum. In soccar is one touch and done with a HUGE net to cover. Where getting the goalie to commit makes it trivial. Vs hockey where goalies can cover a large portion of the net. And i say this all as a former hockey goalie.

The start of a penalty shot/shootout attempt is the puck being touched. After that forward momentum must be maintained in order for it to be legal. Marchand has to come to a complete stop and the puck comes to a complete stop. Haula doesn't start the attempt because the puck isn't stopped. We sometimes see guys on their attempts skate around the puck and cross the red line several times. If we were basing it off of them crossing the red line players wouldn't be able to cross the red line anymore before they attempt their shot.

As a former goaltender, I can tell you the reason goalies play the puck is because... its fun and I'm going to do something cool. The alternate reason is... my teammates aren't helping so I'll help myself... oh, nvm. Also for Samsonov, his stick/blocker looks like it gets caught a little bit on the top of the net and ice is slippery... or you know, spinning on your knees is fun and cool.

I said he needs to convince PDB (or whoever is coaching the team next season) to let him shoot in the shootout.

Either way, going 14/17 (.824) in the shootout is very good (if you look the nhl records page for best shootout save percentages with 40+ shots faced, .824 would be the 3rd best). Ironically, the last place for active NHL players who have faced 40+ shootout attempts in their career is Robin Lehner at .545.

I think Philly messed up and was confused because a hand pass apparently isn't part of a reviewing a goal, but they could have reviewed the refs missing the hand pass. i.e. its similar to when a team is offside and scores, the goal itself isn't reviewed, they only check the offside.

The penalty shot makes complete sense. There has to be a something that starts the shot attempt. It could be crossing the red line but that is no more arbitrary than touching the puck. And touching the puck rule means you don't have to scrutinize if he crossed the line a bit before getting it even in one motion. Once you have the rule on what starts the attempt it is no different than losing it half way down. Once the puck stops its forward movement the attempt is over.

Yup. No different to serve rule in tennis, if the player let the ball drop without touching it they can reset and serve again. However the player should go back behind the red line/ puck and start again.

One of the most irritating comments to me, as a goaltender, is “if you’re a goaltender, tend the goal”. Playing the puck as a goalie is an enormous part of the game. It can save your defensemen being hit in a compromising position, or save some of their energy if they’ve got a forward glued to them. Good goaltenders can catch the opposition on a bad change and help generate a chance, and goalies that know how to play the puck help prevent your team getting work down by constant cycling of the puck. Yes, mistakes happen, but the benefits outweigh the cost. That’s why goalies still play the puck in spite of this asinine one liner. The only people that say “if you’re a goaltender, tend the goal” are the ones that only watch hockey, and don’t play hockey.

Why is there no Dang-it video about the hand pass from against The Flyers then the refs said that they weren't allowed to challenge it. Again, proof that these guys hate The Flyers as much as the NHL itself. One of the worst things to ever happen in a game with the refs, and it's not a "dang-it"?... but a bad call for a penalty shot is?........ One of them was just a bad call. The other was a complete break down of the NHL and the refs.... and it led to a goal..... which led to a tie game..... luckily The Flyers still won. But why it's not THE number one "dang-it" of the season...... bias.

I guess it's a technicality: the attempt is considered started when the guy touches the puck. If you touch the puck and overskate it - you screwed up. If you overskate the puck without touching it - well, you didn't start your attempt, you are just having fun and preparing for it.

That hand pass though that set up a goal in the Flyers-Canadians game was like 3 dang its in one. Philly tried to challenge it and the refs incorrectly told them that it wasn't a challenge-able play even though it is thanks to the Sharks-Blues playoff series a few years ago. The hand pass through the crease that became a goal, the fact everyone and even the refs knew that it shouldn't have counted, and them not knowing the rules.

So glad to hear someone harp on "goalies tending the goal". I played goalie, and hated leaving the net open to play the puck behind the net. So many times you try and make the play, but can't get back there fast enough to really make a difference, let alone recover back to the net fast enough. And that doesn't even account for the odd ricochets the puck could take. That said, the coach would berate me anytime I wouldn't try to play a puck behind the net to the point some of my teammates would actually get mad at me too; like risking an open net was worth it so they didn't have to take an extra stride.

With regards to the "tend the goal" trope .. it's normal for regular fans (and players) to think that the goalie should just stay in the net, or that he opted to just go for a little wander out of boredom. The thing is, these goalies have to play these pucks, it's part of the defensive system. If a goalie doesn't play it, he'll hear it from the D or the coaching staff, it's that important. So yes, it's valid to criticize the choices made by the goalie (where he played it, although a lot of those are drilled plays where he's supposed to put it), but they have to do it. At 15:30, Steve said the Buffalo Sabres have been on the "right" side of many Dang-Its. Not on April 28 against the Bruins. They challenged two Bruins goals for being offsides. Both plays were close, but there was no conclusive evidence. They lost both challenges, and for the second loss they received a DOUBLE minor for delay of game. I had never heard of that rule.

I think that touching the puck signifies starting your shootout attempt. Similar to high jump where you can do your run up but not jump and it does not count as an official attempt. Or at least that is what I think.

Yup, attempt starts when you touch the puck. You have to maintain forward progress as well, so that's why Marchand can't go back, he started his attempt by touching the puck and having it move.

I’m a goalie who probably plays the puck too much and the first goalie goal wasn’t the goalies fault he plays it because the opponent is going to beat his team to the puck so he tried to eliminate that opt.

The rule isn't "overskating the puck". The rule is "the puck must remain in forward motion"; it can't "remain" anything if it hasn't moved yet. That's why Marchand's didn't count and this one did. Pretty straight forward.

Gotta disagree with Steve's take on the shootout rule. I'll concede that Marchand's attempt and Haula's makes very little practical difference, but you have to draw the line somewhere and I think saying "the puck must always be moving forward" is much easier to measure and call objectively than any other wording of the rule. For a league that already has problems with imprecise wording and bad calls the line being so clear cut and easy to determine is a big time plus, even if from a logical perspective there is effectively no difference.

Ok but that means you can’t stick handle at your side or you have to be very careful when putting the puck between your legs because the PUCK moving backwards while the player is moving forwards can happen, it should be that the PLAYER has to be moving forwards at ALL times, from the second the whistle is blown, until it is called a goal/no goal

Samsonov is spinning to try and cover as much of the net, while maintaining his movement momentum. His right knee pad is dragging on the ground. His only other option, really, from this position is to maybe step his right leg up and around the post, and push across. The problem with that is that he exposes more of the bottom of the net (the most LIKELY place the puck will go from Cziekas’s position) while not being certain where the puck might get shot at/from. So in short covering as much as possible, while trying to get in the optimal position as quickly as possible.

Steve, the only argument against a penalty shot would be if the penalty wasn’t a penalty. There are 4 criteria for a penalty shot: Fouled directly from behind or diagonally from behind Fouled beyond the defending blue line No player between the player fouled and the goal tender And the foul denied the player a reasonable scoring opportunity. The slash is that he came down on the stick and knocked it out of Haula’s hands. That’s what the ref saw and called. From his angle, all the penalty shot criteria were met. If he was on the glove side rather than the blocker side he might have seen that the swing around did not actually cause the stick to come out of the players hands, as Haula just dropped it, but since the ref was blocked by Haula’s body, from his position, that was the right call.

It is silly for Marchands attempt to be invalidated, but the main reason is because once the pucks foward progress stops, then the attempt is dead. It's kinda like steve said. "At one point can you overskate" To which their should be a rule on that. In Marchand scenario there is no leeway or point in which a puck moves or when it stops moving. It doesn't matter when the forward progress stops, once it goes its over.

I think the team defending a penalty shot or shootout attempt should get to place a "chaser" that starts on the goal line, while the attacking shooter starts on his own blue line. That would create at least a little bit of back-pressure but still should give enough time for the attacker to make a good move. I hate the super slow approach that some shooters employ.

I think you should skate full speed around the net without the puck in the shootout, say hello to the opposing goal keeper, then go grab the puck at full speed. I’d do it and if they blew it dead, just look at the ref and say “but I didn’t touch the puck yet, legal right”. Lol 😂

The rule for shootouts and penalty shots is that the puck must be continuously moving forward once touched. Marchand grazed it and the puck stopped shortly after. It isn’t about the touch, more so keeping the puck moving forward after the initial touch.

A player touching the puck is when a penalty shot starts in the eyes of the rulebook. In the eyes of most spectators, it starts after the ref blows the whistle and the player starts skating forward. Should honestly be the new rule in my opinion.
