Skaters tend to go in a circle when they do a spread eagle. It just happens. The more comfortable you get, keep trying to make the circle bigger, until you can do it in a straight line. Going in a circle is easier, but who wants easier? Right? We want awesome! So as Debbie says, keep practicing!

What are some stretches I can do to increase my flexibility to be able to hold that position longer? Whether for the spread eagle or for my transitions ?
@Dirtydeborahharry5 жыл бұрын
ok … I am NOT very flexible at all. What I do have is the ability to isolate and hold muscles in position. Work on doing "scissors". Work on doing spins. I have videos on both. Core strength and proper body posture are more important than flexibility to get this move down.

Dirty Deb!! You Rock! Im Very familiar with this move. I love that your pushing your skaters with these easy to do moves that transition you into other things. I essentially use this move to transition from forward to backwards skating, transition from forward to spins, exc. I have some difficulty with going in a straight line while doing this.. my body and the way I skate Make me turn like you do in the video. What would I need to do to adjust to a straight line form the circle movement? I figure i need to Widen my spread with the leading hip, But I find it very uncomfortable to do, almost painful by the time I hit a lesser curve. You Rock as allways and look forward to the next video.. P.s. My skates we talked about should be shipping this week.. eeeeek!

Thank you! Make sure tuck your pelvis under and raise your chest. Look into the direction you want to skate in and tighten up literally every muscle in your body.
@jimbobaggans15645 жыл бұрын
Debbie excellent advice as always. Practice making your circle bigger each time. Yes, it makes your hip joints ache at first. You are using muscles you don't normally use. But, keep at it! Before you know it, the pain stops and you can make that circle bigger. No pain, no gain. After awhile you won't just glide. You will be able to move your legs in and out to increase speed. I call it pumping. Going sideways in a spread eagle moving your legs in and out. It rocks! I am in my 70's. If I can do it, you can do it even better. Stretch them muscles!!!

I used to be such a wiz at this...I would Spread Eagle all the way around the rink. In 2000 my left femur was broken with some shattered bits that got removed, and the docs put it back together a bit wrong with a titanium rod. Took me years afterward to retrain my muscles to accommodate this move, and my arc is still really tight. Can't do straight lines anymore at all. Watching you do this so effortlessly is encouraging though. And you're hot.

Another GEM, dirty Deb! I love this! I have just been working on these and struggling to get the turn-out of my hips enough, but oddly enough, skating on asphalt or cement outdoors with outdoor wheels has made it SO MUCH EASIER having that friction/resistance with the increased grip and rougher terrain to keep my hips turned out and a bigger circumference of the spread eagle. Is this cheating? Lol. I’m afraid I’m going to lose it when rinks open up again and I’m on the smoother floor with harder wheels...

Skating outdoors makes us much better indoor skaters. You are not cheating at all. Keep up the good work.

These, I have no problem with. Getting my feet "perfectly" sideways is another issue. UGH! :( Bright side, only about 3 people at my rink can go full-sideways. I just wish I was one of them. LOL Been doing spread eagles in the hope that they would help, but so far no luck. My feet just don't want to turn out opposite each other...or my knees don't...really not sure which.
@MichaelAlexander19675 жыл бұрын
I have the same issue, so I'm trying to stretch more with my skates off. It definitely requires a certain amount of flexibility.
@MystiqueRisingSun5 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelAlexander1967 I've tried everything I can think of. Including standing against a wall, facing it, with knees bent, of course, with my feet, right up against the wall. I've tried laying down with knees bent and having my kids physically "push down" on my feet to make them go sideways. Neither one has hurt, so I'm pretty sure it's not a flexibility issue. I remember, YEARS ago, training for doing the splits in gymnastics, it always killed me - until I could finally do them. There is no pain in doing either method with getting my feet in the proper position to skate sideways, I can even make them go out when standing around. For some reason, I just can't make them do it when I actually have my skates ON. It's really weird, but I'm working on it. Hopefully I'll get it soon.
@Dirtydeborahharry5 жыл бұрын
Just to add … I am not very flexible at all. Seriously … never have been. I do some yoga just to keep myself from getting injured. I am however, very good at isolating particular muscles and activating them to hold a position.
@MystiqueRisingSun5 жыл бұрын
@@Dirtydeborahharry I think I'm going to have to work on that more. Like I said, no problems even when just standing around, but for some reason, the moment I put my skates on, my feet/knees/legs (??) just say "NO!!!" It just upsets me seeing the regulars (a 9 and a 12 year old, plus one adult) doing it. Granted, the adult is the coach who competed herself when she was younger and now trains other competitors in artistic skating, but still...LOL Though....maybe it's because I'm so used to rink sessions? I tend to lead with my left when outdoor skating, so, skating in the "normal" direction at the rink, of course, I'd have to lead with my right to do it. Guess I just need to work a bit harder in general. I LOVE the "opposite skates" - both forward and backwards! :) Wish they'd do those more often. I feel like if I could just get it down going that way, maybe my body would realize I can do it going the opposite way?
