Dirty Deborah Harry shows you how to do a SPREAD EAGLE on roller skates. Learn the step-by-step process on how to do a spread eagle by using proper body posture, weight transfer, speed and footwork. Skaters will learn how to do a spread eagle both with slight speed and later with full speed. Spread eagles can be held in position or be used as an intro to spinning, turning or cornering.

Skaters tend to go in a circle when they do a spread eagle. It just happens. The more comfortable you get, keep trying to make the circle bigger, until you can do it in a straight line. Going in a circle is easier, but who wants easier? Right? We want awesome! So as Debbie says, keep practicing!

Hi Dirty Harry.. I rink skated on and off my whole life. At 57 im about to embark on getting outdoor skates for exercise. All my friends are like are you crazy?? I said no skating always made me happy. The freedom of movement with the breeze through your hair. And the best memories of my childhood at roller rinks. Im arthritic and outta shape..but im looking forward to my new journey. Thank you for helping others!! Lydia in Florida

@@sunnieray2212 Honestly..I bought the skates, good ones for outdoors. Now Im in the process of buying gear. I put them on went down the sidewalk..got nervous turned around came back home. Going to do it seriously when I have helmet..wrist guards etc..soon. Also, living in North Florida its brutally hot here right now. So in a few weeks I'll be ready. Let me know how it goes for you.

I bought skates and the gear. In Oklahoma our rinks are open. I fell hard a few times. I had the wrong skates, I need a heel on my skates. I would recommend tailbone protection as part of our gear. I haven’t went outside to skate.

I’m 52, on day 5 of skating. Day 1 I went outside - Big mistake, but funny. Day 2 I found a smooth cement pavilion to skate in & also the hardwoods in my house. Sooo much better. I think you have to work yourself up to outside & have the right wheels. Keep on, ladies! 💕

What are some stretches I can do to increase my flexibility to be able to hold that position longer? Whether for the spread eagle or for my transitions ?
@Dirtydeborahharry
@Dirtydeborahharry 4 жыл бұрын
ok … I am NOT very flexible at all. What I do have is the ability to isolate and hold muscles in position. Work on doing "scissors". Work on doing spins. I have videos on both. Core strength and proper body posture are more important than flexibility to get this move down.

When you get comfortable doing the spread eagle bump it up a notch. Bring the toe of each skate up until you are on the back two wheels of each skate. It gives the spread eagle a little flair.

Cindy, you do not look like a dork. Not in the least! I used to think that I looked clumsy on skates but that was only in my own mind. I felt clumsy and awkward. Then someone told me how I was making myself feel like that. So, I just quit thinking about it. Also, I was so embarrassed when I fell. Ha! Everybody falls! If you don't fall then your not taking chances! Not trying something new! I still fall. I figure that's why they make ibuprofen. For people like me!

I used to be such a wiz at this...I would Spread Eagle all the way around the rink. In 2000 my left femur was broken with some shattered bits that got removed, and the docs put it back together a bit wrong with a titanium rod. Took me years afterward to retrain my muscles to accommodate this move, and my arc is still really tight. Can't do straight lines anymore at all. Watching you do this so effortlessly is encouraging though. And you're hot.

Dirty Deb!! You Rock! Im Very familiar with this move. I love that your pushing your skaters with these easy to do moves that transition you into other things. I essentially use this move to transition from forward to backwards skating, transition from forward to spins, exc. I have some difficulty with going in a straight line while doing this.. my body and the way I skate Make me turn like you do in the video. What would I need to do to adjust to a straight line form the circle movement? I figure i need to Widen my spread with the leading hip, But I find it very uncomfortable to do, almost painful by the time I hit a lesser curve. You Rock as allways and look forward to the next video.. P.s. My skates we talked about should be shipping this week.. eeeeek!

@jimbobaggans1564
@jimbobaggans1564 4 жыл бұрын
Debbie excellent advice as always. Practice making your circle bigger each time. Yes, it makes your hip joints ache at first. You are using muscles you don't normally use. But, keep at it! Before you know it, the pain stops and you can make that circle bigger. No pain, no gain. After awhile you won't just glide. You will be able to move your legs in and out to increase speed. I call it pumping. Going sideways in a spread eagle moving your legs in and out. It rocks! I am in my 70's. If I can do it, you can do it even better. Stretch them muscles!!!

Another GEM, dirty Deb! I love this! I have just been working on these and struggling to get the turn-out of my hips enough, but oddly enough, skating on asphalt or cement outdoors with outdoor wheels has made it SO MUCH EASIER having that friction/resistance with the increased grip and rougher terrain to keep my hips turned out and a bigger circumference of the spread eagle. Is this cheating? Lol. I’m afraid I’m going to lose it when rinks open up again and I’m on the smoother floor with harder wheels...

So Deb did I remember hearing your rink has been open since 78 79? So how long have you been on wheels? I helped build & opened our local rink. It was my 3rd rink to skate at. I only startted skating at 17 with the help of lil hotties, it only took me two weeks longer than they know. So shoot me I was a dog. Lol !!! So where is your rink located. I am currently back at it strapping up weakends with my grandson to keep my clan on wheels, oh I forgot I was asked by one of our varied rink owners to build a roller hockey league, about 30 years ago at the afore mentioned rink ( no I dont own it, should have bought it when bank repoed it ounce upon a time I will next time the chance arises ) so I did. We had a small league of around 250 for 3 yeard till I got married and she desided I needed a life outside the rink. We also went through the death and rebirth of our rink. What I mean by that is a new owner came in and bought it after roof and rain damage and put a out door temp. Floor over my urethane lay up floor and ruined our rink for several years. Even my family stopped going and it turned into a sec pool of gang bangers and drugs. The new owners have come in and fixxed roof and floor ish and run off gang and drugs so now we are back at it with new generation. I am however climbing back at a slower pace than in the past, I have lost sight in my left eye so it is a bit tougher in a larger croud as I found out 2 weeks ago when 2 girls came in on my left I managed to keep the first one upright and safe but her girlfriend was not as lucky and as I stand 6' 240lbs she went down hard but I went down harder. I hit right knee then hipper extended my left ham string. It is a real keeper I hard to be helped off thr floor ( I dont get help I am the help 1st time Ivd ever been helped off after I first learned ) I sat out for 10 minutes then got back at it as I didnt want it stoving up on me. It turned black and blue , Its gonna hang around a bit. Anyway great to see the sport and art alive somewhere. I subscribed and if you sell gear I am in the market for some jomp plates and spin tips Ford my skates as well as will need a better set for my 9 year old grandson ounce he gets a bit better.

I’m comfortable with the weight transfer to the inner edge and placing one foot behind the other but what happens with I have both feet down in position my lead foot seems to get “stuck” and I stop in a tight spin planted on my lead inner wheel. I’m wondering if my trucks are too tight? I loosened them from the factory tighten but I still didn’t know how much to loosen them.

Try loosening them up a bit more for sure. Also watch you upper body position, particularly your shoulders. Also ... please note that this move takes a lot of inner leg and core strength. So it may be just a bit of practice more.

Maybe review the Backward Crossover/Crosspull video and set up a new practice routine for it. Focus on the details of the technique and see if you can get a fresh take on that skill.

These, I have no problem with. Getting my feet "perfectly" sideways is another issue. UGH! :( Bright side, only about 3 people at my rink can go full-sideways. I just wish I was one of them. LOL Been doing spread eagles in the hope that they would help, but so far no luck. My feet just don't want to turn out opposite each other...or my knees don't...really not sure which.

I have the same issue, so I'm trying to stretch more with my skates off. It definitely requires a certain amount of flexibility.
@MystiqueRisingSun
@MystiqueRisingSun 4 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelAlexander1967 I've tried everything I can think of. Including standing against a wall, facing it, with knees bent, of course, with my feet, right up against the wall. I've tried laying down with knees bent and having my kids physically "push down" on my feet to make them go sideways. Neither one has hurt, so I'm pretty sure it's not a flexibility issue. I remember, YEARS ago, training for doing the splits in gymnastics, it always killed me - until I could finally do them. There is no pain in doing either method with getting my feet in the proper position to skate sideways, I can even make them go out when standing around. For some reason, I just can't make them do it when I actually have my skates ON. It's really weird, but I'm working on it. Hopefully I'll get it soon.

Just to add … I am not very flexible at all. Seriously … never have been. I do some yoga just to keep myself from getting injured. I am however, very good at isolating particular muscles and activating them to hold a position.

@@Dirtydeborahharry I think I'm going to have to work on that more. Like I said, no problems even when just standing around, but for some reason, the moment I put my skates on, my feet/knees/legs (??) just say "NO!!!" It just upsets me seeing the regulars (a 9 and a 12 year old, plus one adult) doing it. Granted, the adult is the coach who competed herself when she was younger and now trains other competitors in artistic skating, but still...LOL Though....maybe it's because I'm so used to rink sessions? I tend to lead with my left when outdoor skating, so, skating in the "normal" direction at the rink, of course, I'd have to lead with my right to do it. Guess I just need to work a bit harder in general. I LOVE the "opposite skates" - both forward and backwards! :) Wish they'd do those more often. I feel like if I could just get it down going that way, maybe my body would realize I can do it going the opposite way?
