Sprinter Turbo Removal
In this video I have a 2010 3.0 Mercedes Sprinter with a Blown up Intake Impeller and I am going to show you the easiest way to replace this turbo and the tools you need to do this job. Fortunately you do not need a lot of different tools. Let me show you how to do this job.

Yeah, I made the same mistake with the down pipe bolts. It ended up destroying the gasket and burned up the wiring harness. Replaced the harness and going in with new turbo tomorrow. Really good video my man.

Thanks for the video. I replaced one on a Mercedes car once and as you said it's just about exactly the same. The resonator was routed different but had to pull it apart a few times and found the oil cooler was leaking and the EGR module was broken and not working the flaps for the EGR system

@@NutsandBoltswithTone We're right now trying to get the turbo out of my 2008 Dodge Sprinter now, and the downpipe doesn't show a clamp on it, like you say right after kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJbVaYuKqq2FiKsfeature=shared&t=133 Is the downpipe that you're showing at kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJbVaYuKqq2FiKsfeature=shared&t=151 for the "mercedes sprinter, on the newer ones", OR is it for the "older turbos, the dodges" that you mentioned a few seconds before that. Are we just not seeing that clamp on our 2008 Dodge Sprinter downpipe, or if there's not a clamp, how do we move that downpipe out of the way, to access the "back bolt for the passenger side of the turbo to the exhaust manifold" behind/under it, as you mention at kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJbVaYuKqq2FiKsfeature=shared&t=210? @tedc7533 the old ones do not have that clamp, you have to move it out of the way to gain access. That clamp is only on newer ones.

@tedc7533 Technically the repair manual says remove the catalytic converter. I do not do this I just push it out of the way

Thank you very much. What crossover pipe are you talking about? The exhaust manifolds have a flex pipe attached the flange that the turbo connects to. Yeah the one piece down pipe is a pain in the butt for sure. Thank you for watching.

Thanks for the information, I just replaced the turbo on a 2016 sprinter after watching your video. After startup the engine ran away for a few seconds then shut off, what would cause this? any advise would be appriciated!

It is possible. Usually when I am replacing turbos in Sprinters it is for oil leaking or excessive oil consumption and I replace intercooler with the turbo because the intercooler is full of oil. Also I replace the CAC tubes because they are oil soaked and do not want any issues with turbo system after the repair. Thank you for watching. Snapped the turbo shaft at the small diameter where it goes into the larger diameter shaft. 2009 ML 320 Bluetec, had 250,000 miles original turbo. Have had significant oil consumption for about 1.5 years was using 1qt per 125 miles before turbo shaft snapped. Any idea why that would have happened, just worn out?

When oil is in the innercooler, is it not able to be cleaned out?

Does excessive oil in the intercooler cause a runaway condition? I just installed a new turbo on a 2016 sprinter and the engine ran away for a few seconds.

@@gregagan3985 yes it can. Conside checking your PCV valve. Do you idle for long periods? The pcv is junk from what I understand. Many people are deleting it, and others are installing an air oil separator. At idle positive crank case pressure can and will make it through the pcv to the turbo acting like the turbo is leaking oil.

Bad impeller does not cause smoking, internal seals can cause this.

hay Tone i had sprinter issue on the road. im stuck on removing 2 rear bottom bolts on turbo. they are angled upward. they are super tight and awkward to get wrench on. im going to change oil cooler, had oil and water mix. any tip on getting 2 bottom rear turbo bolts off?

The way I get those 2 books off is from the bottom, long extension, big ratchet from driver side of trans. You have to make sure you have the socket on the bolt square or it will round then your screwed. Message me on Instagram if you need any more help. Good luck and thanks for watching

@jeffsgarage8414 if there is any debris in the intercooler from the bad turbo it will go through the turbo. The piping just needs to be flushed really good. Usually the rubber portions are worn so replace that part.

I have a 2014 Mercedes Viano 167 hp 2.2. I hear a slight whistling noise coming from the turbo. The shaft has no play, neither radial nor axial. I recently changed the exhaust manifold gasket. Whenever you hear the typical whistling noise, is it because the turbo is bad? Or is it not always the turbo?

Any tips for the two bolts that are at an angle mounting the Y pipe to the Turbo? In the video you say you come from underneath. I've tried and have no luck getting on the bolts. I can get on them from the top, but not enough leverage to bust them loose. Please help

The Y pipe comes out with the turbo. All 6 bolts from y pipe to exhaust manifolds are done from up top. The Y pipe bracket to block those two bolts I get from underneath. Please message me on Instagram and I can help you more. Thanks for watching.

That particular bracket has 4 bolts . 2 on the Y pipe and 2 on the transmission. You take out the ones on the transmission and leave the other 2 on the Y pipe. . The bracket comes out with the turbo and the Y pipe. You can reach them from the top with a medium extension , no swivel. A lot easier to lossen those 2 since they aren't affected by the exhaust heat .

I actually unbolt that bracket from the turbo, I leave it attached to the transmission personally. I get it from underneath with a wobble and long extension.

Hi Tone .Great video ! First time I took the turbo out I unbolted at the Y pipe with 2 extensions and a swivel but it was supper difficult . Older 2008 model super corroded and high miles ( around 600K ) original turbo . Got them out somehow using a minitorch but it was a huge pain . I found out about unbolting at the transmission from another youtube video ( forgot the name of the channel ) . Second time I unbolted at the transmission and saved a lot of time and frustration. Low torque ( they bolt into alluminum ) and no corrosion. Thanks for posting !

Hi! Can anybody provide the torque specifications? My concern is specially for the lower base on the pedestal and the turbocharger to pedestal where the gaskets are required. There are fluids running through and I don't want to overtight and cause deformation of the contact surface planeity.

The 6cyl Engine is also available here with twin turbos in them..the 4cyl got one turbo..my start to whistle so i soon need replace it ..with a rebuilt one.
