I collect spyderco knives and just recently got the newest version of this knife the native 5. Basically the same thing only the blade is full flat ground and has g10 scales instead of fiberglass reinforced nylon. They also are now made in more exotic steels like Maxamet, s90v, s110v and magnacut

Thanks for the info! Yes, now that you mention it, I remember that this first generation had the FRN handle. And I had viewers commenting on the "swedge" of the blade, wishing they still made it like this. The next time I visit the US I'd really like to buy a fifth generation Native, and see if it gets the same use as this one for the following 16 years. Thanks for this comment!

I've got the same knife from back in the day . I sent it in to get serviced when the blade was a little chipped, and the tip broken, a couple of years ago. They put a beautiful new edge on it. Well worth the 10 or fifteen bucks to bring it back to life. Europe...maybe not so easy

I wish I could send it to Spyderco and have it factory sharp again, but, on the other hand, sharpening it myself, when I do it off camera and with no time limit, is a bit of a meditative experience. Thanks for this comment!

The Native family is my favorite Spyderco line. I've owned over 20 differents Natives over the years. The 1st generation is really interesting, I have the same one as you and it's really nice, emblematic ! The Native 2 is really classy, full stainless handle, a more asiatic steel (AUS-10) and almost the same blade. Native 3 was weird, even better hollow grind and the FRN handle was 3D contoured, showing their volcano grip pattern years in advance :D the steel was VG10 though, and their VG10 is not that hard. To sum up, only the Native 1 and 5 are USA made, the 3 other generations were made in Japan (Seki-City). The Native 5 is the best iteration of this design, but it lost the crazy looking blade it once had !

, thanks a lot for this informative comment! now You made me want to get a Native 5! But also 2,3 and 4! Made in Japan items are usually great quality pieces: fender made in Japan instruments are excellent. So, I guess next time I visit the US, I’ll come back with a few boxes of Spydercos (and maybe Benchmades, Buck,…).! Thank you for your comment!!!

@@WUDN-WatchUDontNeed Spyderco is my favorite brand, something like 95% of my knives 😁The most fun ones to get are 1 2 and 5 in my opinion. But the Native 2 is super hard to find nowadays (I'm in Europe too)

I love a knife that has seen years of faithful service. This one looks like it has had a great life as being a faithful companion. Its seems very stabby! The knife I use most of the time and no matter how many times I switch out EDC blades is the Honeybadger large tong. I use that knife all the time! Those scales look like FRN ... That point looks like dagger and I quite like it. I have only ever owned two spiderco's. The Delica and a PM2. Both were awesome but I miss my flipper tab. That's why I dont like ahrder steels. I struggle with the same issue. 440C, 8crmov13 and other similar steels sharpen like a dream but these are tough to do. Hope you have a great day man!

Johan! I had never heard of honeybager knives, so I looked them up: what marvelous beasts! And they’re not that expensive at all! I might , just might, develop the desire to own one…😂 I love the “traditional “ high quality steels you mentioned: easier to sharpen, but still good quality. Thanks for this comment!!!

Every time I make a knife video I'm sorry for disappointing watch aficionados... But I'll make a "State of the Malady" video, featuring "all the boxes" soon! Thanks for this comment!
