Double sided CBN coated stone.
(single layer of abrasive)
Similar to other coated/plated diamond stones but uses more expensive CBN that is adhered to the plate better.
CBN is softer than diamond but harder than any of the features in steel or any carbides.
The CBN grains are geometrically less aggressive than diamond and may leave a "nicer" cut and may behave better than diamond with the nickel coating used to electroplate the grains to the embryo.
Advantage-
It will be more affordable than a Resin, Metallic or Vitrified bonded stones but will make a deeper, more aggressive cut that is nice for rope and animal hide.
Disadvantage-
Deeper cut has consequences, The push cutting will be reduced compared to more exotic bonded stones in CBN and Diamond and once the abrasive grains wear out it this benchstone is done and needs to be replaced.
For best results and longevity the stone works best with low pressure in use.
Everything has its trade offs. Always fun to explore.

Just ordered one of these. Heard good things about it, and I think the price was very fair especially for being here in Scandinavia where everything is usually 25% more expensive than in the States. I also like that it got 400 & 800 Mesh which I don't see that often on high quality stones/plates, very often it's 600/1000 (or something like that). I really like a medium grit edge on some of my folders, so can't wait to get this in hand.

Highlighted comment Great video as always. I was all set to get a DMT or Ultra Sharp diamond stone along with a medium spyderco and possibly a fine spyderco for my freehand sharpening system, but now after watching your videos I'm not sure. I'm now considering a venev diamond water stone, gritomatic silicon stone, or this spyderco stone. I'm hoping for something simple and low-maintenance that will put good working edges on my blades. I have 1um strops as well. I will be sharpening a range of steels, mostly s30v, along with some s90v, rex45, etc. I already have an edge pro but want to get into freehand sharpening. What combination of stones would you recommend? Thanks!

I only wish they would also come out with a smaller version (just to make these more affordable). I don't really need/want full size as I have other stones for my kitchen knives. Maxamet? Nah, not yet, however if it works on 10v at 67rc it will work on Maxamet. You could make that jump but there will still be scratches leftover from the medium grit. I feel it's deleterious to the edge on Vanadium Carbide rich steels at high hardness to use on ceramic so I don't see myself doing such however it well refine the apex better than straight off the medium grit and will clean up the burr more.

@FearNoSteel

People seem to want the bonded stuff but the cost is extraordinary, this thing is interesting because we have never gotten a CBN "DMT like" plate that also has the abrasive plated to a plate rather than on a film adhered to a plate like DMT which can fall apart with heavy use and abuse with film bubbling up off the plate. I don't see bonded stones as the future replacement for all stones as much as there are more of a specialized or luxury option much like super steels are to steels. Cost is especially high moving into vitrified and Metallic bonded stones and CBN costs more than diamond. For reference the cost for 0.353 oz's (50ct) of type 2 CBN is $40-60 in raw powder abrasive. The cost of just filling one stone at 100% concentration of CBN powder for a 8x3" at 3mm to 5mm is more than most folks pay for a value stone set for just tiny pile of boring black looking powder. I think it's nice for folks to have options, there will be some more high end, luxury stones on the website soon, however, they will cost more than coated and resin options and some folks will be upset without understand the details involved.
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
@@FearNoSteel Yea I recall you telling me about that CBN pricing, and how it is not cost effective, to make those stones. Luxury, or boutique stones, sure, but produced for the masses, no. Regardless, plates like these, in my experience, depend heavily on the user, to have a light touch. Too much pressure, and the edge will be shaved off, or worse, the coating will get damaged/removed. I agree, it is nice to have options. Good on Spyderco for coming out with these. Knowing how much of an abrasive junky I am, I'll probably grab a set, just to try. Becoming a mainstay in my arsenal, is doubtful. There are guys out there, that prefer this sort of thing. I understand the low maintenance, take anywhere, no lube required, forever flat, argument, and there is an appeal to that.

400 JIS is about 320 ANSI or FEPA-F . They are all equal at 220 and below which is considered the macro grit range. FEPA-F and ANSI 1200 are about 3000-4000 JIS or FEPA-P(usually used for coated paper). I forget the approximation to Russian GOST, which is common for diamond.

Let me ask - through previous research, a number of people have shown to sharpen the edge not by moving it away from the stone (like you do in the video), but with moving the edge towards the stone (something like when sharpening with Spyderco Sharpmaker, as is shown in Sals video). From what is said, if you move your edge away from the stone, you pull the material down to the tip of the edge, and it rolls over to the other side of the edge, and like this indefinitely. This is why it suprises me you sharpen like this. Could you please elaborate on this?

You're talking about edge leading vs. edge trailing strokes. Either work. I believe Science of Sharp has shown that edge leading (into the stone) is better for removing burr. I get better edges with edge training finish strokes and sharpen the way BBB does. I can't explain why edge training works better for me. Either way is fine.

I'd say it's user dependent, But it is what it is It's single layer of nickel coated abrasive grains electroplated to a plate. If you're going ham and adding pressure it'll be easy to strip any plate out, Even if you go with light touch you only have a single layer of crystal grains, No matter how hard something is matter acting on matter means both imparting wear on each other. So eventually the super Abrasive will dull just like any other plate.

Tough to say, seems the biggest variable is how much pressure is being used when sharpening. Reality is what it is however, it's a single layer of abrasive. When it wears out it wears out. Should be able to sharpen a lot of knives and save a lot of time when it's running though.
