When done right, I think that a tanto can be a very competent slicers. I think that the Spyderco PM2 tanto is one of the better tanto designs.

03:30 The beauty of a hollow grind is that the blade gets thinner as you sharpen it for the first 1-2 millimeters. Look at the edge of the tanto and see its below the center line of that hollow grind. I saw a video where Chris Reeves explained it and I've been a fan of the hollow grind ever since.

Yeah thats not always the case it is with CRK hollow grinds but not all hollows are built the same, but most of them at the very least stay the same thickness bte for the first part of the blade, but yeah crk are a deep hollow that does get a little thinner before it starts getting thicker

Any time i sharpen a knife i always take them apart too make sure no grit got into the bearings and inside the knife im extremely picky lol

The Chaves 229 Ultramar (on both the drop point AND the Japanese tanto) implements this style of compound grind better than just about anything else I’ve seen on the market. Reate has used the same style of grind on their K2’s and a number of other knives they have produced lately, but at least in my opinion, it is best realized on their Chaves line. Chaves’ knives just look perfect with this blade grind. I don’t know how else to put it lol. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah i love the tanto on my k2 i also think that the code 4 does a perfect example of an American tanto, the socoms are great but id rather see it with a hollow like their customs

That is a killer Spydy. Wicked tanto. Just got my 1st Spydy yesterday&its less than 4' not a fixed blade or tanto&its AWESOME! 1 knife broke all my rules of personal EDC. I knew thered be an exception&I found it in Spyder co now im gonna have to do some thinkin on my EDC rules lol.

Nice! Thats awesome you should buy a small conditioning stone the lower grts are not going to glase like the higher grts will so you might be fine but it helps bring the diamonds to the surface

Get a cup just wide enough for the knife closed to fit in. Put alcohol in it and put the pivot side in the alcohol swish it around for a bit. That should help gettin all that gunk out and wit a duster blow out extra alcohol left in. And of course add what ever lube back because the alcohol probably washed it out.

Great idea i personally would just use hot water from faucet, alcohol is to dang expensive to use that way for me, i do use a few products i get from work for free, that work great i usually just spray it though after rinsing under hot water then after spraying it down oil it up, but the cup trick is great for those that have alcohol like that

Hi Jarrod good video.I admire your skill.Couple question for you.Arn't most Japanese tanto's rounded with no secondary point,at the front? Second have you ever done a tanto on W.S. K.O. edition or with bade grinder attachment? I do like tanto's most of them are suppriseing versatile. T.C

So theres different styles of Japanese tanto the and they have different names, but as for pocket knives goes they usually have a secondary tip but not always but when its rounded its a japanese, American tantos are always straight

If you're good with the KO grinder tantos are no problem. Just pay close attention to both sides so everything matches up especially at the transition from, in this case, hollow and flat.

Hi! Awesome video. I've got a PM2 tanto too. But its about time to sharpen it now. Would like to know what the bevel angle is on the tanto? Can't seem to find any info on it. All I know is that Spyderco normally use a 30 (15/15) degree bevel angle

I'm not sure what they are using on the tanto, but I think you would be safe with a bevel around 17° you cab always raise or drop it if your not happy
