Man... Eric Glesser is just the absolute best. Honest, humble, proud of his team. Not afraid to take responsibility when his products fall short. Not afraid to be blunt about the trade-offs of his high-priced steels like the brittleness of M398. Not afraid to admit they were challenged by button locks. Not afraid to give credit to his competitors where it's due. That's the kind of leader I'd want to work for, and I'm proud to own a few of his knives.

There is so many reasons I love Spyderco, but every year when it comes time to watch all the content from the knife industry trade shows like shot show, I am reminded by Erick Glesser just why I love them so much. Spyderco defends the features and functions of a knife that I love. I loved listening to him talk about the Native 5.

Thanks DCA,, and everyone at Knife Center. I've watched 3 vids with Eric at Shot this year. You asked the questions and gave the insights I was curious about. Always appreciate the work, take care. 👍👍🔪

That PITS is so freaking cool. I love how Spyderco isn’t afraid to try unusual and obscure things. No one else brings us a better variety of steels, locks, designs, and everything else. It shouldn’t really surprise me, considering they did more to bring about the modern folder than anyone else.

Gotta agree, not usually my style but it LOOKS super cool and I love the blade shape. I was worried it was some ubber thin, flimsy knife but it looks BEEFY and really cool with the handle design not being some super light-weight, minimal design.

Yet their designs are constrained and sometimes ruined by their insistance on always sticking with the Spydiehole. The first consideration in designing the blade has to be having room for a hole . . .

I love Spyderco's commitment to back locks. For some reason there seems to be a contingent of people who think back locks are outdated/old, but they work so amazingly well, especially Spyderco's. I was just in Golden and had to pick up a Native Chief in SPY27 (and a Manix 2 XL, I couldn't help myself).

Spyderco is like Porsche, iterating and perfecting the subtleties of design and engineering year after year after year (CQI as they call it). I think this gets lost on many people who expect/prefer to see more whizbang, completely-new-direction, flashy stuff. These sit-downs allow us to really understand the incredible effort and time put into these knife designs. Kudos to Knifecenter and David C. for not talking over their interview subjects like so often happens, or awkwardly fan-boying the conversation into uncomfortable oblivion.

The reason Glesser recommends against removing screws from aluminum surf the word “galling”. Basically thread seizing.
@chrisjosekuehl8 күн бұрын
Yeah but galling wouldn’t be caused by occasional taking apart, typically galling occurs under high pressure and heat from friction. But either way, steel screws could easily strip aluminum ones, if the anodized the aluminum that would increase surface hardness and could prevent that from happening.
@sandrahildebrand42838 күн бұрын
@ All good points, appreciate the comment. Things to avoid would be misaligned parts, dirty and damaged threads, over-tightening and using threads to pull parts together. Material properties and interactions is an interesting and complicated topic, my last words will be protective oxide layer. I am not an expert, just an inquisitive nerd.

As someone who searches for “the weeds”, DCA and Eric going over a table of knives is always my favorite video from every show. I actually was thinking how awesome it would be if these two had a podcast where going off the rails and into the weeds could be the entire focus! One can dream but for now I will always watch these. Lastly I think this spyderco reveal is a pretty good sign that they’re finally caught up and back on track!

I got goosebumps when Erick mentioned that the Yojumbo's hollow grind was of "the pride of America". He's right. That knife and the Yojimbo should probably be recognized a bit more for its excellent grind. I'm just not really a Wharncliffe kind of guy so I haven't had one in hand yet.

Eric, when discussing the user serviceability of a knife, instead of saying "...because we know how people act," please say "...because we know what our customers want." Yes, we want the ability to maintain, repair (because you likely won't), and customize the stuff that we buy. That applies to *all* durable goods, not just your knives, and we are not misbehaving.

Spyderco takes heat treat seriously, my para 3 in s30v has outperformed m390, 20cv, every other s30v especially the shit BM puts out. If you use a Spyderco in a certain steel it will spoil you. Only other company that’s similar is Hogue but they only run like 3 steels

Is he for real when he says that loads of people’s favourite thing about the GB2 is the terrible lockbar access?! 😂 I’ve seen so many of them with modded lockbar access because of how uncomfortable it is to disengage. Almost a perfect knife apart from that from what I can see (a lil big for me but that’s just preference) but that lockbar access is just a fail. I’m really interested in the Essenza but that lockbar access could potentially kill the design for me for sure 😢

I own 4 spydercos, none of them came with nice edges, smooth action or blade centered. Thats what I dont like about spyderco, I have to use sometimes hours to get it good. It is my favourite folder brand, but only because I want it to be. If I bought 10 folders from different companies, spyderco would be somewhere in the bottom when we are talking fit and finish, in my opinion.
