I never had luck using square bill lures until I read about Fred Young that made Big O lures back in the seventies; he taught Rick Clunn how he used his. Hold the rod tip low and reel it as fast as you can. I use an old medium action seven foot six cranking rod. I seldom set the hook because you don’t need too. I keep my drag set to slip at 3 or 4 pounds and leave it. Then just cast; and reel like your late for supper. Mostly I use 12 pound fluorocarbon and retie when I get tired for a brake. There is no wondering when a Bass hits it; because most times they explode out of the water. Having the rod tip low makes it harder for them to spit the lure. If a big Bass hits it your drag will save it from breaking off. It works in cold water just the same as warm. Stripers in spring; will hit so hard you will wonder why your rod didn’t break. Then; they take off like a firetruck headed for a fire. You might forget about frog fishing quickly when a square bill bite is on. I started using single in line hooks to save time unhooking fish and they work just as good as trebles do. I don’t worry if their hitting rocks or not. Bass will eat them in open water too. Little ones are killers for river Smallmouth. Nothing complicated doing this.

Great video! I planned to do some more lipless and squarebill fishing this spring and I bought some new rods. I did get that shimano sellus so I will give it a try with these type of baits. I liked the full painting videos but I liked the speed version and then you talked about other stuff.

I totally agree with you debo. I've got a amp casting rod 7ft medium moderate. Never truly used it but I'm gonna start using it this year with a lews lfs with 15lb fluoro to fish the strike king 1.5 this spring through to fall this year for the first time ever for me. Then for most other fishing will be my abu garcia vengence casting rod medium heavy for jigs in the 3/8oz-5/8oz jigs. With same reel as other. And then for those heavier conditions then the heavy in the vengence for frogs, flipping and pitching "heavier) cover with 15-20lb line or 40-50lb braid. Thank you for the video.

Speed painting does not do the lure painting justice. Love seeing how all the individual components come together to make something really cool and unique. Would like to get into it myself, but just don't have the time.You are getting better with each lure- they look great.
