Mistake #7 doing a squat in a Smith Machine. The Smith Machine forces you to squat with your torso in a completely upright fashion meaning your hip extensors (glutes and hamstrings) are going to be shortened throughout the entire range of motion. Additionally since the machine stabilizes the weight for you it means far less muscle fiber activation and an overall far inferior lift for developing strength and mass compared to a free squat with a barbell.

Its important when it comes to working with disabled people and people recovering from heart attacks and strokes as well as various special populations. Its not a joke, its a skill that people's lives are dependent on. Not everyone who needs fitness is a meat head only concerned about the size of his quads. Exercise progression and exercise modalities have to be adjusted based on which populations you train and that can't be learned by going to the misc forums at bodybuilding.com or reading some trash article at muscle and fiction.
@bbrockRailFan10 жыл бұрын
why are you commenting in this forum then? You should be commenting on a physical therapy forum designed for people who could care less about gaining size or the like.
@haircafekevin10 жыл бұрын
Because I find this forum a good and entertaining resource for people interested in strength training like myself. However, short of having recently had a spinal injury or reconstructive knee surgery I have all of my special population clients squat so information about squatting is still relevant to me both personally and towards what I do.

One thing I've always liked about this channel is you guys are not condescending. While they're are exceptions, a large majority of fitness channels on KZbin talk down towards their beginner viewers. For example; when demonstrating the improper form, it's common to see them express that anyone who makes these kinds of mistakes are idiots. One more reason why I know your popularity will continue to grow. You guys are awesome, keep it up.

mistake number #6 Not squatting. You can't tell people you lift if you don't do the most effective lift of them all. Unless you have a spinal injury, it is not acceptable not to squat (and no knee injuries aren't an excuse). I would have 500 times more respect for the guy that's lifted 1 week but he's trying to squat correctly and push himself with baby weight than a 4 year long 'brah' that doesn't squat because he's a pussy.
@ButterJibby10 жыл бұрын
brockway babe as someone who has also suffered a knee injury that took me out the game for about a year i can tell you, you can still squat if you rehabilitate correctly and look after yourself. I worked my way through a lot of physiotherapy, a lot of pain and after doing box squats for a while (much less knee strain than regular squats) to then going back to free weight squats i now squat more than i did prior to my injury. If you spend the rest of your days thinking you can't do something then you won't, i'm not saying be an idiot and go squat if you can't, i'm saying every effort should be made to make sure you can squat again.
@ButterJibby10 жыл бұрын
***** hey man, 185 with clean form is far more impressive than the idiot that quarter squats 3 plates! Congratulations on your progress so far, as cliche as it sounds consistency is the key. Your on your way to well beyond 225 if you keep at it, well done.
@gainsandglory680810 жыл бұрын
as someone who squats 5 times a week and trains for strength, I can say that this is bullshit. If you hate squatting, don't squat. It is a productive and effective exercise that will make you amazing gains for strength and size, along with increasing bone density. But if you really hate to squat, don't do it. Leg press, lunges, RDL's and leg extensions will build you an amazing pair of wheels. I just don't see why someone would rather do all of those exercises when they could do one and get the same result (yes I truly believe that all you need is squats for leg development. Well as long as you are doing low bar).
@wazzer181210 жыл бұрын
i swear if it wasn't for squats and dl id still have back probs, if you get injured it because its your body's weakest muscle
@gainsandglory680810 жыл бұрын
Matt Thompson honestly, once a week for any muscle is not enough frequency. Frequency builds muscle better than a ton of volume once a week. Muscles don't think in weeks, that's all you. If the body needed 7 days to recover, humans would not have made it this far. 2-3 times per week for each muscle group is optimal. Push/Pull splits, upper lower/splits, and full body splits allow for this to happen. That being said, you will still grow on a bro split (5 days on, 2 rest). It is just not optimal.

I only recently started squatting again after 6 months, my form was horrible when I started out and I decided I wouldn't do it til I worked out the issues in my back, finally started again last week and got my form right. Though I never did any of that stuff you guys listed here, my main one was having my toes pointed too far out due to my knee injuries. Soon as I strengthened up my quads and calves, everything came together. Great video.

I used to bent my knees forward. I was lucky that I haven't injured my self. One tip in order to maintain your knees inline is to take your hips back and also you can place a little bench behind you. Go all the way down, sit down, check the line of your knees and back and repeat. Don't use to much weight at first This will help your form tremendously. Hope it helps.

Thank you for the information. I injured myself a month and a half ago because the bar was on my neck. I normally jog to the gym in a Hoody even though it's like 87 degrees outside to warm up my upper body. The day that I injured it I didn't jog. I did my 2 warm up sets with just the bar and thought I was ready to go heavy. My mistake was that I thought I could use my neck and grip the bar like a vice to keep it from rolling off. As soon as I finished my 2 warmup sets I slapped on a couple of 45's to equal 315lbs. As soon as I got the bar off the pins I felt as if my middle traps exploded. I felt in a way paralyzed because the pain was so great in my middle traps and above that one spot on your spine with the bulge below the neck. For about 3 weeks I could barely turn my head, move my arms in certain positions, and lift my head all the way up. It's been a month and a half from that, but I'm getting this pinching pain in my middle right traps whenever I support weight while my right arm is horizontal. Does anyone know what's wrong with me? Thanks

Great vid! I'll gladly share with a few of my clients because maybe your way of explaining it certain common miscues is better than mine or the visualization is more friendly. The only thing I would add is that when your knees pass the tip of your toes, it may also be due to having tight muscle group(s) in your posterior chain along with tight tendons or not warming/stretching out properly. I'm sure you both know this but that may be an idea for another video. Cheers from Miami!
