The game was never fair. A lot of people conflate fairness with what the Front Man said about equality. He was referring to equality vis a vis the players. Meaning, no player held any advantage over another player. He wasn't referring to the relationship between the players and the organisers of the game. That part was unfair from the get go.
@VMYeahVN3 жыл бұрын
I initially took it as he's referring to the fairness between the game and the VIPs betting on the game. I think your take is accurate too though.
@funfunfun36243 жыл бұрын
Well, each had advantages depending on the game
@Kashi_Mochibean3 жыл бұрын
@@VMYeahVN I think you are probably right that it has more to do with VIP betting, because the games themselves were of course not particularly fair. 1. In red light green light players start different distances from the finish with no mental preparation for the idea that if you move you literally die 2. For Dalgona, some players got the frickin umbrella, a shape several times harder than all the others (our main character likely being the only one to survive that choice) There are some lesser things to say about each of the other games. But the biggest one is absolutely that damn glass bridge. By comparison one could argue that the first couple game were completely fair. Afterall, players chose their own shape, with at least the knowledge of the shape, and had a practical chance to survive (if they licked it probably). But the glass bridge where they were so intent on you having no way to know the right answer that they turned the lights off at the end; that is unarguably a bs game mostly intended to be random gambling (though it made for an intense episode and worked well for the show). And that goes without the way it blew up. As a game designer myself, no game can, or necessarily should, be totally equal. But that glass stepping stone one just pisses me off.
@StephOMacRules3 жыл бұрын
Which in a way is why Sae-byeok's death is on her for keeping it to herself. She should have informed the guards, say that out of equality between players, she has to be healed so she stands on equal ground with the other two finalists especially as it was the organizers' doing that she got hurt, not doing so would mean it is a rigged game. Turned that way, they would have been forced to treat her.
@uneagerly3 жыл бұрын
@@StephOMacRules honestly they wouldn't have done anything. they've shown that they don't care if players die outside of the games. aka the fight that broke out during the third(?) episode when they were supposed to be sleeping. that wasn't fair at all, but they let it happen anyways. and because the glass hitting sae-byeok was an "accident", they would argue that against her defense. and the way the last game is set up, it's obvious it's meant for a one on one. so it's not on her at all. the reality is that the game IS unfair, regardless of what the front man said.

What John said at the beginning, “The goalpost of fairness moves every time”… I felt like that was kind of an underlying theme of the whole show. Like- in a capitalist society you’re told if you just play by the rules and work hard, you’ll succeed, but often the rules of the game are changed on you, or are tricky- like how Sang-Woo won against Ali at marbles. He made it clear that he technically “played by the rules.” But it was so underhanded, because Ali didn’t strictly interpret the rules to include trickery. As Greg said, it’s a facade that it’s fair. Just part of what I think makes this show so fascinating.
@crackajacka873 жыл бұрын
This isn't about capitalism per se and more about human nature and greed as you can see these same issues play out in socialist and communist countries.... Nature is brutal, it's survival of the fittest and peoples will to survive and succeed will trump anything else, even your friends and family which is what is shown throughout the show.

Your commentary on how Gihun and Sangwoo start off in the same place is spot on --- Gihun and Sangwoo have trajectories that are foils to each other, but have a similar origin. They both come from an impoverished background; both handle this differently. Gihun resisted capitialism (ie the riots); Sangwoo engaged in it. The point of this shared background is essentially that, both Gihun and Sangwoo, who react differently to their same lot in life, have ended up at the same place, because upward mobility, and throwing off that background of economic inequality, is impossible within capitalism.

my theory is the frontman was a cop, hence he knew a lot about police procedural (besides having a cop bro also). 2 things then come to mind: either he's still a cop deep deep undercover(could be cool, but highly unlikely since the game observes all and sees all)..OR.. he was a cop heavy in debt just like the rest and got pulled into the game. and if he had won, that means he would have killed his competitors, and having tasted such power over people, perhaps he wanted more. The oldman saw this, recognized his potential n manipulated him to serve. and the rest happened just like to that jedi apprentice long ago, in a galaxy far away.

If Sangwoo wanted to actually win though wouldn't he have killed Gihun while his back was turned? Then that would've left him to go up against an already dying Saebyeok. So you have to wonder why he decided to kill Saebyeok instead...mercy killing maybe? Or maybe he didn't realize how injured she was and just went for it

There is a flash back to them as children in the very first episode, and i've watched it a couple of times and have a bit of an interesting interpretation of it. I think it shows the main character was the leader of their little group of school friends, he used to be the one that always won their playground games, he was the cool one, that the others looked up to. But in adult life, they've all grown apart and the main character grew up to become a bit of a low-life, where as his biggest adversary as a kid, the number 2 kid in their group, grew up to go to Buisness school and become top of his class. It creates an interesting dynamic between the two in this series, as the main character used to have so much promise as a kid, he might feel like he's waisted his life and those were his best years, were he was the man others looked up to. In converse, his rival growing up, who was always number 2 in their group, might have always been a little jealous of him. Might be part of why he looks at him in a kinda of self important, i'm superior kind of way.

Also, the fairness the people who are hosting the game are speaking of. Doesn't necissarily mean its fair for the players, i think its more, fair for the people betting on the event. The glass explosion is fair, because everyone has the same odds of surviving it or getting hit. The turning the light off is fair, because all the players who are still alive, and subject to the same limitation, there for its an even playing field for people to bet on. The guy being an expert glass blower, gave him an edge that made him a clear faviourite and dramatically increased the odds of them all surviving. Making it less interesting to bet on.

There will def be a season 2… this was too popular to not have another season. Plus it’s listed as season 1 not as a limited series. I think we’ll see Jun ho again and he’ll team up with Gi hun to take down the games and the vip’s together.
@Kunn0ichiL3g3nd3 жыл бұрын
I sure hope so! If they really wanted to kill Junho off, they would've. In-ho would have shot him in the head, as he did to others all throughout the season. Plus, he was essentially hit in the shoulder and only hit the water. No thud. No loud crack to indicate he hit his head and died. The show loved to show off blood, gore, and dead bodies. I doubt he's dead. That's just my two cents. Haha. ♡

From when we discover the archives of previous games and that In-Ho/the brother was a former player and winner (year 2015?), it was pretty clear to me that he was probably the Front Man. I changed my mind in episode 7 when the Front Man interacts with the back of The Host: I thought it meant The Host was In-Ho, emotionally impacted by learning that his cop brother was here and "dead" (when they discovered the body with his ID) and that was the reason 1. we didn't see his face 2. he was fit to welcome the VIPs himself... No it was indeed only the Front Man! What I don't understand is his whole character arc. 1. In-Ho seemed to live in a small room, why is that if he won billions when winning his game? Was it a front? And when on the phone with his mother, the cop seemed to imply that In-Ho's friends were a bad crowd or did I misunderstand? 2. Why didn't he pay his rent? It alerted his mother and cop brother of his "disappearance". Didn't he intend to come back? Why did he leave his coffin gift box with the Squid card in his room as he was a strategic part of the game preparation? 3. Was it his first year being Front Man?

1:54 a direct translation of that line is "You are fkin stupid, you are the kind of person that have to eat shit and doenjang (korean soybean paste) to know the difference" the subtitle did catch the nuance of that line. but, i just love the rawness of the original line

The explosion of the bridge was not for a celebration... it was gonna explode because the time run out so if there was people still in those they had to fall since they failed... if they had finish sooner they would have move away from that bridge by the time it had exploded but since they barely make it it has consequences ... there is nothing unfair... Let's not forget that they are there from their free will... go somewhere else if you thing you can earn more than 40b won by playing 6 games (dangerous games... though game nonetheless =D)

Front Man's (actor's) name is Lee Byung-Hun. This is the actor the girl, Ji-yeong (from episode 6) was talking about when quoting that mojito line. Hilarious.

I think Gi Hun and Sang Woo are who they have always been. I don't see one evolving and the other devolving. Sang Woo is who he as always been, which is not a good man. Gi-Hun is who he's always been, a good man who didn't make good life choice. Sang Woo is a man of greed hence the choices he made which caused him to have so much debt. The game simple magnified who they both were at their core. That's why Sae-byeok said he was a good man when he was thinking about going over and killing Sang-Woo. It wasn't for greed per say but for revenge for Ali and the other man he killed on the bridge.

I mean, to play devil advocate, you could say the glass bridge game IS fair with turning off the light to take away a single person's unfair advantage of being experienced in glass works, and the bridge exploding at the end is simply the mechanism of destroying the bridge to kill anyone still on it. Getting injured by the glass shards is because they hesitated till the last seconds to cross.

The brother is played by Lee Byung-hun! I recognised him right away because he plays Storm Shadow in G.I Joe: The Rise of the Cobra and sequel G.I Joe: Retaliation 😁 if you watch Episode 6 (Gganbu) over, there’s a scene of a conversation between Sae-byeok and Ji-yeong, and Ji-yeong talks about the Maldives and having mojito, and actually mentions Lee Byung-hun’s name, which I thought was a little clever considering he’s actually on the show playing the Frontman😁 Edit: oops, I wrote this before you guys remembered his name and where he’s from 😂

The ironic part about Sae-Byeok’s death is that her neck was slit slightly on the opposite side of the cut the guy did and now it’s a complete line across the front of her neck. Foreshadowing her death in the introduction of her character possibly?

Some excellent Lee Byung-hun films you guys should check out include: the thriller I Saw the Devil (a cop on a revenge mission against a serial killer), the action drama A Bittersweet Life (a hitman is ordered to keep on eye on his boss’s mistress), and the political drama The Man Standing Next (based on the true story of the assassination of a Korean president).

t could be done in Series 2. 1) Skip rope with razor sharp ropes. 2) Simon says: but darker. 3) dodge Ball but when tagged, you die! 4) hid and go seek.. shot when found! 5) musical chairs in “teams”. Looser get head cut off (samurai swords) 6) obstacle course with lasers on sharks in a pool (or evil sea bass).

First time watching it in English dub I loved it but during the marble scene I kept asking My lady who never saw still hasn’t seen a lick of the show who she thought would die and what not just having fun and the reveals and twist were more jaw dropping then sad where as watching it now in Korean with English sub and just getting a better sense of everything this episode got me more then 6!!!!! The second time watching this show seeing Gi-Hun sobbing on the mans shoulder made me sad she’d a few tears yes but seeing Sae-Byeok go out like that got me hard. The relationship her and Gi-hun build is so genuine. Really do love the cast they got for this show. It’ll be a constant rewatch just like true detective season 1 for me time is like a flat circle alright alright alright 🤣
