When I had my spinal fusion back in 1976, my parents asked the same question about the organs. The doctors answer was "they will make room for themselves" they also mentioned that the organs will not stop growing Until after the age of 21 Or when national growth of the human body stops. People with dwarfism have normal sized organs, they are just “squished” a lot closer together. I would think the same is true for Shane and other people with SMA.
@strgazr043 жыл бұрын
This actually depends on the type of dwarfism the person has. There are over 200 different types of dwarfism. The more common types affect the limb size more than the torso, thus allowing the organs to have the "normal" amount of space to grow. I have a very rare type of dwarfism that has the opposite issue - my torso is extremely small where my limbs are longer. My organs are not average size. For example, my lungs are very small and misshapen. After a scan, the doctor told me one of my lungs was actually the same size as my heart, which is roughly fist sized. That is much smaller than an average lung should be.
@lc4life3693 жыл бұрын
This makes no sense to me as my doctor often measures my organs due to me having an auto immune disease that can effect any organ in the body, making them inflamed and enlarged. I asked him if everyone has the same size organs because I was curious how he knew they are enlarged. He said no and he uses my weight and height and age (I think, I can't remember exactly what he said) to determine what they should be and that's how he knows if they are enlarged. (Bigger than what they should be wich is bad of course because they have to work harder and eventually causes damage that is permanent). I take medicine for inflammation to hopefully stop permanent damage from happening and eventually needed new organs. So I kinda think Shane is right but also his growth was stunted from surgery so maybe it's different in his case. It would be cool if he asked his doctor and let us know because I can't find any info on it and this video made me curious.

While yes, your daughters organs should be of average size as only her total height is stunted. So, I usually never comment but I feel this is actually quite intersting. I am doing a medical sciences degree right now, and have done a course that includes topics such as organ development. In it, they described the concept that usually the body does not follow a "human blueprint", rather factors such as signalling molecules or mechanical stress establish how body parts developed. I would expect that, due to the fact that the chest cavity of Shane is smaller, there might be some limitations to how big his organs can grow! I have sent an email to one of the lecturers asking what he thinks about this. I tried to do some independent research and there was no clear answer. I'll update if I find something out!
@missyellownote5 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Esteves I agree! It would be interesting to hear what your lecturer’s thoughts are on this. I found this article www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0925477316300697 although the reliability of Science Direct is questionable. Their conclusion was that “it has been shown that mechanical forces have the potential to regulate growth and size of tissues” (like you stated) but the mechanism is not fully understood. I agree with Shane. Normal organs wouldn't fit in his body. There might be enough "wiggle room" in the abdominal cavity for those organs to be normal size, but not the chest cavity. Lungs must be like mythical goldfish - it can't be any other way. Hearts are like any muscle and grow based on how much they are used, so if your heart only ever needs to pump blood around a small body it won't grow very large.

I watched a clip on a small child whose organs grew outside her body. Very interesting. Anyway. Even a baby has a mind boggling amount in them. Amazing how it fitted back in.

I’m a nurse, just a guess... I would say his organs would have to be on the smaller size to compensate for the smaller chest and abdominal region. For instance, the organs would push on his diagram making it more difficult to breath. I’m surely not a doctor. It’s just an assumption. So enjoy your channel and your adorable discussions.

I would say it depends what organ. -Lungs and heart would definitely stay small as the cardiovascular system adapts to body size (hence obesity, bigger heart), as well as your stomach because the stomach stretches with how much food you eat and based on your size you probably dont need as much food as an average guy your age. -In cases like liver (im not 100% but) it tends to grow with age and an enlarged liver tends to have no symptoms, growing despite small rib cage size so your liver could very well be bigger if not normal size. -Kidneys are even weirder where they say they grow based on age but also based on size, yet the average size of an adult kidney after age 15 stays pretty much the same. So who even knows what size your kidneys are, most of the study's said it was based on BMI but none really account for the fact that adult renal function differs from that of a 7 year old kid.
@animeaunty5 жыл бұрын
Eva A I was also thinking that the different organs would b different sizes depending on function too. Lungs & heart pump much less with less room to grow. This may apply to the liver as well cuz his blood volume would b lower. I think his intestinal track would still try to grow normally & would likely crowd. Things like spleen & apendix would prolly b pretty close to normal I think. His liver & heart r prolly the size of a small adult woman & not a true 'child' size I think...?
@ndlamont015 жыл бұрын
The larger the person does not mean the larger the hard and lungs (which is why larger people have difficulty breathing and higher blood pressure. Same concepts as pregnant women. The heart doesn't grow any bigger it's the size of your fist (roughly) so that's why the heart can't compensate for larger people. The only time the heart is larger is if it's weak. The heart muscle works harder to pump therefore making it grow (like it's lift weights). An enlarged heart can be fatal. I think his organs are normal sized which is why he can't eat much bc they y are all stuffed in not leaving room for his stomach to hold more food...

Like Shane's ability to laugh at himself, and Hannah's ability to laugh at herself. Taking life one day at a time, and not taking everything so seriously .. is just so wonderful, because it's hard for people (no matter what their situations) in general to just... let go.. I love how comfortable y'all are with not only yourselves but each other as individuals and as a couple.. It's refreshing.. and I thank you for allowing us (society in general) a look at what life can be like.. Ya'll bring a smile to my face, and lighten my heart.. and I thank you personally..
