The best comics strike a balance between being dark and moody and fun and upbeat. Probably why Spider-Man is still an international sensation after about 60 years. You can have your dark and tragic story of Gwen Stacy, but also have Spidey and Squirrel Girl chasing down a squirrel that stole his teacher's I.D. through the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade where there are floats of themselves, and it makes total sense.

I’ve been a Squirrel Girl fan from the very beginning. I was a young teenager when the original story came out and I read it to my kid sister. We laughed and just appreciated the fun, half-serious nature of it. In the midst of all the variant covers of Cable/Venom/Spawn comics that typified the Dark Age, a zany story like that stood out. We talked about her from time to time in the years following that, always figuring she was a one-off but wishing someone would use her. I remember a few years later rereading it and realizing Ditko was the co-creator and being floored by it. I was surprised when she started to have a mini renaissance. Unbeatable was amazing fun. Seeing her in animation was just unbelievable. And now with Rivals? She was the first character I had to play, naturally!

The thing i love the most about squirrel girl is how she's defeated a lot of heavy hitters, but it's usually done off-screen and usually with no explanation Like she beat Thanos, The Mad Titan who's capable of putting down the Hulk and is actively genociding the multiverse as a love letter to Marvel's physical manifestation of death... and she did that with one squirrel!

@FangsFirst6 күн бұрын
Which is all because Dan Slott was kind of an ass about how Jim Starlin wrote Thanos, who kept trying to course-correct everyone who kept retconning his character with no explanation. Since Thanos had stopped being genocidal or performing metaphorical love letters to Death (at her request!) years and years earlier (yes: in 1991! Look it up, True Believers!-but not in wikis, because people insist on memory holing this unsubtle fact for some reason), as part of an overall character arc that EVERYONE kept ignoring after he wandered away from Marvel (including some folks I otherwise love the work of: Mark Waid, Dan Jurgens, etc-or, unfortunately, the extremely popular and utterly nonsensical Joe Kelly story) Dan Slott decided the retcons were because Starlin was mad that people were saying Thanos could be defeated, but it was because every one of those Thanoses acted insanely out of character when compared to _every single story_ since the end of _The Infinity Gauntlet_ where Thanos had a real moment of self-realization and character progression and *changed*. That is: he stopped being motivated by acquiring insane power or ending the universe, and started working to save it (as kind of a huge jerk, who definitely still _had_ tried to kill everyone repeatedly). But no one else cared or paid attention, so they were like "He's that guy who wants to kill everyone, right?" And so Starlin wrote a story saying those were all extremely powerful mystical-android-clones to justify how crazy powerful they were…and why they were so incredibly out-of-character. Dan Slott responded by being a juvenile child who misunderstood the entire reason for it happening, and wrote that stupid Squirrel Girl story as a middle finger to Starlin, despite the fact that Starlin himself was much less obnoxiously responding to people who had _disrespected his own stories by outright ignoring them_. It rankles the entire thing, because it's less "ha ha this is so ridiculous and funny" and more "Dan Slott is a child, mad that he _thinks_ Starlin is saying no one can defeat his baby but himself and is gonna stick it to him!!" So we got stuck with an unchanging, static Thanos forever after, despite Starlin valiantly trying to make his character more interesting. And we're still there. And it will never change.

As far as superhero books went, I had some hand-me-down issues of Howard the Duck and Silver Age Batman, and that was it. But one day I just happened to see the first issue of 'Unbeatable Squirrel Girl', and decided to pick it up on a whim. It became the first superhero title I read every issue for, and was what helped hook me into the wider world of comics. As such, it's been wild and lovely to see more and more people get turned on to her. I hope this upward trend continues.

It would be great if you did another video about her, like how she's no longer a mutant (for annoying X-Men copyright reasons) or her many adventures defeating ridiculously powerful enemies (Doom again, Galactus, Thanos, Wolverine, Deadpool, etc.). I particularly love her because, in the North/Henderson run, she always has such CREATIVE ways of winning. Sometimes just being reasonable and talking to the villains is actually really helpful and she makes a friend. Sometimes it's an absolutely bonkers way of working with her squirrels (ex. the squirrel suit). Surprisingly often it's some facet of her being a computer science major! My mother adopted an injured baby squirrel one winter. She released it in the spring & it hung around afterwards and would come back to visit for a while.

Excellent coverage of Squirrel Girl. I like her pluckiness, high energy, & silly personality. I can see why you're nuts about her, Sasha! (Groaner pun!) 😂🤣🙋🐿️🐿️

Part of me wishes that they incorporated the knuckle spike into her kit in the game. Always felt odd that they didn't. Along with not giving Wolverine the ability to climb walls with his claws or Storm access to any other elements besides lighting and wind.
@captaincomet9963Ай бұрын
Later on the knuckle spike pretty much gets replaced by claws in the same vein as Sabertooth's. Missed opportunity to have her slash with those for her melee.

Are we to expect a Lin Lie episode since he's also gaining popularity due to Marvel Rivalz?

She beat Galactus and Thanos. She would outshine the Avengers with the greatest of ease.

8:26 The Comic that ended Justice and FireStar’s relationship. My god. Why Fabian? Why? I remember Squirrel Girl tries to see Speedball again but he was in his Pennace phase. Thanks Mark Millar. And I believe Squirrel Girl hangout with Speedball in a different universe. That’s that. Like when Robbie goes back being Speedball he didn’t even reach out to Squirrel Girl. Two Fun Facts: you remember The New Warriors Tv show? That was supposed to on Freeform? But the show got Shelved despite positive feedback from the unaired pilot(one day the pilot will be in the internet). 1.) Squirrel Girl and Speedball was supposed to be Tv show. 2.) The actress, Milana Vayntrub portrayal Squirrel Girl in the Unaired pilot also voiced Squirrel Girl in both Marvel Rising and Marvel Rivals.

It was actually in the future, not on a different universe. She borrowed Doom's time machine.

I’m a big fan of Ryan North’s writing of Squirrel Girl. (I even interviewed him for my website, Monster Complex.) I especially enjoyed how his stories showed Squirrel Girl spending more time befriending super villains than punching them. But I don’t know whether I care about any more stories with her. Comparing her with She-Hulk - another Marvel superheroine - She-Hulk’s stories can also be funny, but strike me as generally more well-rounded. (At least, that’s how I compare the two.) As such, most of the other Squirrel Girl stories you described don’t make me want to track any of them down. However: Thanks for mentioning that song from Phineas and Ferb! I’m a huge fan of their songs, but I’d never even thought about the “squirrel” connection until you mentioned it.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl silhouette is so iconic which is a sign of a great design. If you can see an silhouette and immediately recognized shows good work

It's a fun idea to go over the origins of the somewhat lesser known marvel rivals. Gotta hit that SEO!

I don't mind her having a past fling with Logan. It gives her character a TINY speck of spice and shows she's not the little kid she used to be, while still being shown as quirky and upbeat.

Squirrel Girl is a nice reminder that comics can be fun. That's not to devalue more serious stories, but from her onset I've gotten the sense that we're meant to enjoy the ride.

I LOVE Squirrel Girl... she reminds me a bit of Jubilee, albeit with a more wholesome upbringing, who just won't let life beat her down (which is my head cannon for the "Unbeatable" moniker). I love the adaptations of her; she always has that youthful optimism, and... well,... real understanding of her abilities, so that she can slot herself in any situation. She is the (and mind you, while I write this, I am male) female version of the "every person,"... or at least the every person we WANT to be. Not "perfect," but confident, exuberant, and clever enough to use our talents to really help. I usually don't respond in this way, but Squirrel Girl holds a real special place in my heart alongside characters like Luke Skywalker, Taran of Caer Dallben, or Kaylee

I've known about Squirrel Girl when I saw her in the Great lakes Avengers mini. And I only discovered them because of their appearance in a Deadpool issue by Joe Kelly. I like how upbeat she is and how she used the squirrels to beat Deadpool. I hated the art in her run, so I was genuinely impressed and surprised to see not only her but Jeff in Marvel Rivals. I enjoy Rivals so much I made a quick list of obscure heroes that would be fun to see in that game.

One of my favorite Squirrel Girl moments is in All-New Wolverine #7. She excitedly arrives at Laura Kinney's apartment with an angry live wolverine so it can tell Laura important news. Laura is dumbfounded and annoyed: "I can't talk to wolverines!" But Gabby instantly bonds with it ("Hello, understandably irritated animal") and Jonathan is still her pet thanks to Doreen.

I had a pet squirrel growing up. When I first heard about Squirrel Girl, it was after losing the little fella. I've always a soft spot for the character ever since then. She is one of those "I wonder what she's up to now" characters I have followed over the years.

Read one of her issues in the War of the Realms crossover and it was cute, the art was vibrant. She seemed to have her own set of villains and needed a little extra help taking on the warring forces with her villain. Other than that I know her from the LEGO Marvel games. She throws squirrels at people.

Doreen is one of the characters I just enjoy. I can say the first comic series I bought weekly was GLA cause I was young and when the guy at the comic shiop says own the first issue of the new avengers series. Seemed like a good idea at the time and she has been a favorite ever since. Even the novels weren't half bad for being lighthearted fun.
