Some people do not realize, but squirrels actually play a critical role in maintaining the healthy populations of all nut bearing trees in their habitat. Even though their brains grow by about 25% in the winter, to remember where their nuts a buried, they never remember them all. They typically do not need them all either. In some cases, they will actually watch fellow squirrels bury nuts and steal them during the winter. They might not be as evolved as humans, but they don't need to be, they fit in perfectly fine the way they are.
@meetontheledge138010 ай бұрын
I was skeptical of 25% brain growth- never heard of it. Thank you for noting this amazing (relatively) new finding. Even after reading the research, I can hardly believe it! Amazing Mother Nature.
@str8wmail-trump24booyah10 ай бұрын
Research with squirrels and oak trees were done . The conclusion and results were pretty amazing . They are essential for oak and old growth forest survival . Oak tree species become viable for germination and edible at different times . Some are viable for consumption and germination immediately , some after a year . And some after 2 years . The squirrels seem to know this and forgotten or lost acorns have not been lost at all . They leave those for hardship situations , drought for example . And the results showed they do come back for some of those the following season . They concluded or think that the squirrels intentionally leaves some acorns buried on purpose . Similar to a rat , they have excellent memory especially concerning food .

There is a small park with trees near where I live that I often walk through. Just to see if I would get any reaction from the one or two squirrels I spotted I took a few mixed nuts with me and threw them near the base of the trees. After a few days the squirrels came at the sound of my voice and the rustling of the same bag I always use. They don't yet feed from my hand but will approach me to within 2or3 feet for the reward of a walnut( shelled) their absolute favourite. Other people see this and are amazed that the squirrels approach me but I suppose once they get used to someone they are creatures of habit and know they will get a treat. About 6 or 7 of them approach me now. I love watching their antics but confess I can't tell any of them apart like the lady in the video.

My son came in yesterday, thrilled that one of the braver little ones *finally* took a filbert from his fingers, gently holding on to his thumb as he leisurely sniffed the nut. Grabby even let him pet him a bit, then looked back, as if to say "thanks". 😊💕 He was named Grabby because he would come sooo close, grabbing air with his paws over and over (hoping to get a nut that way), but too nervous to come closer. Success!
