Thanks so much for the thorough review Ian! It was really interesting to see your thoughts on your brand new beautifully specced e hybrid. I have one question...you said when going through each performance mode that in the sport n sport+ modes the electric motors are not on. I was wondering whar you meant by that, because I was under the impression that like the 918 in sport+ for example both the engine and the battery powered system would be on in sport+ so that you can take advantage of the combined output of 462hp. Let me know if I misunderstood your statement. Love your reviews and keep up the awesome effort!!

Hi Ian. Following a full charge how many miles/Km would you get before you need to recharge once more? As I see it, the car is both most economical and best performing when it has a charge. I ask this as I complete 1 to 2 long trips per week and want to know if a full charge will get me to my destination before I recharge during the day and ahead of my return trip? Thanks, great reviews, Jim

Thanks Ian, you are one of the few providers of useful information on this car, it’s much appreciated. I have a 4e hybrid sports turismo arriving in April, agate grey, saddle leather and 21” sport design wheels. I’m very interested in your observations on the cars weight, how noticeable and do you view it to be a negative? I’d be very interested in your observations of driving in hybrid mode, starting with a full charge and how much electric mileage you have at the end and any sense of how much the regenerative brakes are contributing? Sorry, this might be a tough one to answer! I’m told that InnoDrive, provided you’ve inputted your destination, will identify the most optimal use of both engines when in hybrid drive, but there’s very little information as to the electric engines reserves at the end of a road trip! Again, thanks for your videos, I’ve really enjoyed them.

Hey, thanks for your kind words. There are a number of questions to answer and I shall try to cover them off in order, if I miss one remind me when you read this. Firstly the cars weight. It is noticeably heavier than the 4S I tested 4 to 6 months ago. I think the handling is good, remembering I am still running in the car, but the 4S was phenomenal, up there with sports-cars significantly lighter, and I am on record as saying that the 4S was better in the handling department than the Aston DB11 I had tested a few weeks before, Really depends on what you want the car for. I use mine as a comfort orientated vehicle and so handling is secondary. Still handles well though but here you have to add 'for a big car'. The 4S handled brilliantly period even when compared to our Golf R. Too early to comment on the electric range because I am told this will improve as the electric motors bed in, circa 24 miles at the moment. Brakes do contribute a fair amount if you are charging when on the move. My advice is not to though if you value your fuel consumption. Halved, or worse, my range when I used e-charge. E-hold seems to work if you want to retain your electric range, even here it will drop. I notice when you empty the electric range the only way of being able to use further electric power is too wait until the car re-charges which it will do in e-hybrid but it does not last far. I assume that the car keeps some in reserve to supplement the engine's power so you can have access to the full 462hp when in sport and sport plus. Was not aware InnoDrive helped in the way you outline, I shall try to find out. Overall I am enjoying the driving experience, the Panamera Sport Turismo looks great and will handle well. I think the driving I give the car will result in significant additional fuel consumption in town especially but the main reason I bought the car is that at some point, in the not too distant future probs, cars that cannot run on zero emissions, or close, will not be allowed in London/ Cities generally. Hope this helps and I am sure my experiences will continue to increase the benefits to be take from the car going forward.

Ian, I am enjoying your reviews on the E-Hybrid very much. I ordered my 2018 Panamera 4 E-Hybrid in March, 2017 and it was built in June. Subsequently it shipped and arrived in San Diego port on September 15th. It has been sitting there ever since awaiting EPA and CARB certification. I have been considering cancelling my order but PCNA and my Dealer have gone out of their way to try and keep me motivated to wait for the car. I am hoping I won't be dissappointed. I am somewhat surprised you haven't been able to get more than 23 miles indicated on your full charge?? I'm hoping that will improve on your next review. I'd also like to hear more of your comments on the driving of the vehicle (e.g. regenerative braking, acceleration, etc.).

Hi Bernie, Thanks a lot! I have heard a number of people tell me these cars are not yet certified for the US. You will enjoy if you get the chance to ! The car in only charging to 24 miles and dropping to 22 within a hundred metres. I am told that the batteries will bed in and the range will increase but the jury's out on this one. One theory given was that because you have to retain a level of battery charge for sport and sport plus, so the electric motor can work in conjunction with the engine to give maximum power, this could come from the theoretical electric range of 31 miles. I shall report back as soon as I have an explanation that makes sense as well as more coverage of the driving experience.

Thanks for the review. My Turbo S Sport Turismo is due in April but your “delivery video” persuaded me to opt for the Truffle Brown interior and the same wheel choice, although I have gone for Night Blue and the Burr Walnut. Lots of other different config choices as well as you might expect. I agree that the configurator doesn’t always give a very useful rendition. Good to hear you are now using the mains to charge the car. Enjoy. April still seems a long time away! 🙂

Thanks Ian, your videos have been very useful. My 4 E hybrid Sports Turismo arrives in April. It’s spec’d similarly, agate gray, saddle leather, tech package, comfort packages, 21” sport design wheels, rear wheel steering, LED upgraded lights, though in Canada their effectiveness has been reduced. Like you, I thought it time to learn the technology that I believe will be widespread within 5 years. My only real concern has always been the weight, but, it’s a big car, so ultra fast corners aren’t the priority. I believe in sport or sport plus, that the electric motor is active, unless there’s no reserve? I look forward to your next video, particularly if it’s focus is on handling and overall driving comfort. Thanks again, buying new vehicles with so much new tech requires lots of research and you’ve helped!

Thanks man appreciate you comments. I think you have hit the nail on the head, tight corners are not the priority here, fast corners though it handles extremely well, it is a competent performer no question. You are also correct in your comments on sport and sport plus. Won't do a handling video until the car is run in probs. Driving comfort is really v good and for those of us that like a sporty orientated suspension set up, (firm but compliant), I have it in sport with the suspension lowered so i'd say close to perfection for me at least.

I think 1 problem with this technology being the future is that a lot of people, including myself, don't park their cars in the garage. Also wondering what kind of MPG would you get on your london trips in a Diesel car of that size?
@SS8000cars
@SS8000cars 6 жыл бұрын
Fair comment but the trick will be in the next generation, or even the generation after that, of batteries that are able to charge the car in ten to fifteen minutes allowing you to do this on your way home as you would normally fill your car with petrol. We are not there clearly! In a Panamera 4S Diesel you would expect to get mid twenties in heavyish traffic. In a 4S I got eighteen to nineteen in town.

Great review Ian. I'm new to your channel but good to get real world information. Have a build slot for April and been struggling between the hybrid or straight petrol. Have only a couple of weeks left to decide. I had the hybrid demo for a weekend and it was showing a range of 17 miles fully charged which the dealer couldn't explain. From listening to your review seems this will improve the more its charged? It would also not show absolutely full no matter how long it was on charge! I too was struggling to get decent economy and while that's not the main reason behind buying the Panamera it has to be taken into account if its going to be the hybrid. Best i could get was 30mpg in hybrid mode, and the best real world range on electric only was 13 miles. The other issue is weight, like you I'm not a boy racer but it doesn't help when the dealer says it handles well for a "big lump", lol, i think! You also helped clear up the Sports Design Package. Its very unclear on the configurator. I'm looking at Volcano with Turbo wheels and Crayon ( lousy description of the colour ). However my wife is trying to get me to go with black, for practicality, as usual she's probably right! Looking forward to a video of the driving dynamics. Thanks for your help in the decision making process.

The additional weight is mostly right behind the rear axle, so assume that while peak grip with the same tires will be down, it should be better balanced. Best reason why the E hybrid is better than the 4S is they start with the same engine but the Hybrid is cheaper. Be interesting to see if Porsche changed anything (like smaller turbos) or if its just a reflash away from 4S power.
@SS8000cars
@SS8000cars 6 жыл бұрын
Hi David, difficult decision for you. Might be worth reading my response to pdymott below for my current view. However in a nutshell it depends what you want out of the car. If you drive often in cities then the e-hybrid has to be a serious consideration as long as you can get decent consumption levels. I have managed 45-50mpg in traffic if I have enough electric range left. Do not be tempted to use e-charge by using the engine to increase the range, consumption is dire if you do. I managed to obtain 16mpg at one point when using this method. If you do not use the car in town regularly then I might suggest the 4S. It is such a tremendous machine, handling is so accomplished it betters the AM DB11 V12 and many other dedicated sports cars imo. And if you want it will waft you around like a Rolls albeit with a better cabin. Overall fuel consumption should be around thirty with 35 to 40 quite possible on long journeys. Probably no help but either way you will not regret it. Overall I am thoroughly enjoying the e-hybrid and it suits my purpose perfectly but if it was to be my only car and I did not drive in town most days then I would most likely buy a 4S.
@davidowen2859

Thanks Ian i will check out the 4S over the next few days. However I do like the idea of being literally plugged in to the next generation of tech. Have you heard much about the 7.2KW on board charger. If it charges in 2 hours from a 13 amp supply and in 15 minutes from a 32 amp supply that seems like a game changer to me. Love your spec. Very similar to mine. My wife and i are going to compromise, i think, on beige interior. I have a Boxster that's in Ocean Blue with Savanah beige, very similar to the Panamera, that i love so I've been trying to be different. Not sure how much the poor Boxster will go out on the road once the Panamera arrives but i still love it. Thanks for your feed back.

@SS8000cars 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you David and the idea of being plugged in to the next generation of tech and the type of driving I do swayed me. The fact that you already have a Boxster for fast country lanes means the decision may well be easy in the end. Sounds a like an e-hybrid fits the bill perfectly!

Did you by any chance get to try the 4 wheel steering Ian? Not been able to myself. I live in a small Lincolnshire town and keep hearing that the 4 wheel steering "shortens" the wheel base and makes it much more manoeuvrable. But i wonder if it is really that noticeable? The two options i like the idea of are the 4 wheel steering and sports exhaust but its so easy to get even more carried away with the options list than i already have. I had the demo with the sports exhaust and it did give it a noticeable low burble but whether or not that's worth £2300 I'm not sure.

If you want the range on luxury plug in hybrids to increase, you'll need to get regulations to require more to avoid congestion charges and other taxes. There's a pretty solid reason why they all are arriving with a bit more than 30 mile range. Its all they have to do, and lets them do the least modification to the base car to fit batteries and all the other required bits. Can't wait for you to compare this to the RangeRover hybrids that are supposedly out soon

Subscribed and well done on this vid, all vids actually. The button feeling you are speaking of is haptic feedback. It's a bit like what some smartphones have on the screen to give a feeling of a button. In regards to where you thought your electric range was x but was showing y, the car will take into consideration how much power you are using just sitting there. It looked like you had both rear heated seats on which is a decent draw of power, for example. Enjoy the new car and many happy miles.

Great Video Ian! I just took delivery of the long wheelbase version of this car, and my use case is very similar to yours. But somehow I don't find the car very agile at all on smaller roads, and the acceleration on the motorway isn't as good as I'd hope it would be. Maybe that's due to the extra weight of the Executive version and lack of 4-wheel steer option on my car. Did you opt for the 4-wheel steer on your car, do you think that helps the handling?
@SS8000cars
@SS8000cars 6 жыл бұрын
Unquestionably the rear steer does help with the cars manoeuvrability in tight spaces, however I did not order mine with this option because the car that I tried before ordering had this as an option and I did not feel it made the car handle any better. However some people have commented on some of our Panamera videos that they feel it did make a difference. Maybe on the Executive version it would have been more noticeable. I am slightly surprised that you do not find the acceleration as impressive as you hoped it might be. Have you tried using the button on the mode switch on the steering wheel. This gives added punch for short periods, 20 seconds or so. Porsche call this the Sport Response Button and they say 'Pressing the button in the centre of the mode switch primes the engine and transmission for the fastest possible unleashing of power (e.g. for overtaking)'. It does make a difference!
@PcyTrail
@PcyTrail 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply. I got the car last month and so far did around 300 miles in it. I'm aware of the Sport Response Button and I plan to try it out after the break-in period. I tried a few full throttle acceleration in Sport and Sport+ on the motorway from around 50 to 100, it felt quick but not 400+bhp quick. My battery was quite low (showing range of 7-9 miles) when I did the runs so they might not be as effective. Alternatively, it could be that I was just fooled by the words of the car journalists, calling this generation of Panamera a four-seater 911. I actually never planned to get this car. When I was trading in my 997.2 4S for a 991.2 GT3(Congrats on your GT3, love your spec), my salesman convinced me to get a daily and an older 911 for track works. I had my Carrera 4S as a daily plus an SUV for really practical scenarios. The Panamera is such a big car compared to the 911, and I feel it replaces the role of my SUV more than the 911.
@SS8000cars
@SS8000cars 6 жыл бұрын
You are right to wait until the car is run in before using the Sport Response Button. I waited until mine had more than a 1000 miles showing before testing it, (now done almost 3000), and hopefully then you will feel the car performs more like a 462hp machine. Funnily enough I am not aware of it's proportions even in London except that the interior is extremely roomy adding to that luxurious feeling.

Obviously you can't charge the car while you're driving without ruining the consumption; the energy that goes into the battery has to come from the fuel. I guess the e-charge mode is very useful when you need the battery to be charged so you can do your city-driving only on electric. Or if the battery is already charged and you don't want to discharge it then you can use the e-hold mode. I know I'd use the car that way, trying to reduce the emissions in town and charging it on country/highway roads.

Hi Pawel, I have owned a number of SUV's including the Cayenne and their advantages are well poven but they never handle like a properly sorted sports car not even the Macan though this is the best out there. Not driven the new Cayenne but I would be surprised. However the Panamera is a serious piece of kit and in Panamera S guise drives like a well honed sports car as well as a being a rather good luxury saloon. However it depends on your needs obviously. No discount from Porsche unfortunately at least not for me!! Let me know what you decide if you get the time.

The Porsche Panamera is a great car, but the hybrid version is a waste of time in Australia. Without the UK incentives and handouts and short driving distances the hybrid version just doesn't make sense. The extra 350kg of weight that you're always lugging around uses nearly 2 litres/100km more than the non hybrid version. In Australia the hybrid version costs an extra A$50,000 above the cost of a non hybrid version which is equivalent to 500,000kms of driving. In other words you can drive a non hybrid Panamera for the life of the car just on the extra capital cost. The extra fuel usage of 2 litres/100kms for the heavier car would add an extra A$12,500 to drive those 500,000 kms. The cost of charging the car in Australia at A$0.27/kWh means that it costs A$3.78 to drive the first 50kms on electric, whereas it costs A$5.00 to dive with petrol. However after driving those 50kms on a round trip of say 200km you'll be paying an extra A$18.25 for the last 150km on hybrid and A$15.00 for petrol. Therefore the 200km trip will cost A$20 for petrol and A$22.03 for hybrid. The hybrid car which uses 2litre/100km more in the petrol mode also pollutes more than the non hybrid version. The hybrid version in actual fact makes absolutely no sense unless its total subsidized by a foolish Government.

You have habit to say (for example) "we ordered", instead if "I ordered". It sounds like you are some company presenter, so you are obligated to say "we" (as a company) ordered this car... English is not my native language, so I wonder why are you using "we" instead of "I"?

Good point Mac Arows. However at ss8000cars it is we rather than me. Not meant to sound arrogant so apologies if it does.

Thank you for your kind answer. Still, I am really curious why do you use "we"... I hope you dont mind my question.

@Mac Arows Hopefully you see this although your comment is over two months old. The English language is very odd, and many native English speakers often speak against the normal rules of English. I've found that many people use "we" in place of "I," and I use it myself quite a bit. We generally use it in replacement of I when we are trying to get our point across or emphasize a statement. Even though this isn't grammatically correct, when trying to convince others we sometimes replace I with we. Going over it in my head, I can't exactly explain the reasoning behind it because it literally makes no sense. I've also noticed that when you're not talking directly to someone, but rather a group of people, "we" tends to show up more commonly in place of "I." I guess it's supposed to provide some legitimacy that what your saying is reasonable because when someone uses "we" instead of "I" it makes it seem as if others already agree or support what you're saying.
