I THINK originally it was. I am guessing providing care for the sick being a part of monastic duty.

Yes it is. It was founded at the same time. St Bartholomew the Great was always built with the intention of care for the sick. Although today they're 2 separate institutions they remain linked in many ways including the pastoral services that are provided by St Bartholomew to the hospital
