I started with the Royal Ballet at 6, professionals class at 11, then studied with an incredible Russian ballerina, Irina Vassilieff (NYC). She taught ballet until her late 80's. Her dedication and love for ballet was an inspiration. The highest compliment I ever received from her is when she tapped me over my heart and told me "YOU have Russian soul...DAH!" I remember her words like yesterday and it was over 40 years ago when she said them. The training I got from her was like no other. She knew more about anatomy than most doctors. (Her mother had been a prima and partner of Nijinsky.) This video clip is the most beautiful Swan Lake I've ever seen. The costumes and sets are opulent and the dancing is exquisite and technically brilliant - classical ballet at its finest.

I love your story! I just finished a book on Van Cliburn...I think that is why he won the piano competition in Moscow. The Russian people felt Van truly had a "Russian soul".
@tiamia71393 жыл бұрын
@@jeanard4240 I read that book Jean and knew Van personally. He was such a beautiful person, so kind and humble. He played Russian music like a Russian in the grand Romantic style, which is why his Juilliard teacher, Rosina Lhevinne was so adamant that he enter the 1st Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. She had many very famous students (John Browning, Jeaneane Dowis and others), but none of them played the Russian repertoire like Van. I traveled all over the United States to hear Van play in live concert. I had his handwritten note framed thanking me for flowers that I gave him at the end of a concert. I always sat front row and gave him flowers as they did in Moscow. He knew I loved "Widmung" and would play it as his last encore whenever he spotted me in front row. He dearly loved that piece too. I had many wonderful conversations with him over the years. We shared a deep love for Russian Romanticism. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a very warm and caring person. He was famous for his bear hugs. He would throw his arms around you, pull you close and rock you back and forth. However, I always felt his life was bittersweet. As much fame as Van achieved, I don't think he found true happiness and contentment until he met Tommy Smith. His years with Tommy were the happiest of his life. His final words were to Tommy..."I love you!" He died shortly afterwards.

Is it normal for a beefy, 62 year old British builder to be utterly destroyed by such overwhelming beauty? I just had to pause the video to answer the door, and the lady caller was trying to console me. She said she understood how deeply one is affected by a perfect performance of Swan Lake, which this undoubtedly is. I don't normally answer the door clutching a tear-soaked Kleenex, sniffing and puffy-eyed, but surely this is the most profoundly acceptable excuse anyone could have for arriving at the front door looking like a sodden towel. Bravo to everyone in the company who conspired to destroy me - it was wonderful!!

@@robbas_krk1510 Your comment is not only deeply disturbing, but also dimwitted and destructive to the worst. The western world is poisoned with medial and political baiting against Russia, and the shocking truth is, that many people - like you - do not think for themselves anymore. They only follow the western "OUTRAGE-MANAGEMENT" blindly. Assisted thinking. Very sad. If you would set the same standards for every country, clearly the USA would be the worst. But I do not see such comments as yours under every video of US-artists and stars. 99% of Russian people - and russian artists - do not have ANYTHING to do with this war, let alone artists who died long ago. Such comments clearly fit in the category "I do not want to deal with my personal issues, so I will spread my hatred on others". In other words: this comment does clearly not belong under music videos.

for those of you that don’t understand: this ballet is about a girl who gets turned into a Swan by an evil guy and one day a prince looking for a princess goes hunting and meets her and they fall in love. then the evil guy and his daughter, the black swan, he uses his powers on her to make everyone think she is the white swan. then he confessed his love to her thinking that it’s the white swan then the only way for her to save everyone is for her to die so she jumps and so does the prince.

“Irina Kolesnikova (Russian: Ирина Владимировна Коле́сникова; born 1980) is a Russian ballet dancer. She is the prima ballerina of the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre. She graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in 1998, class of Elvira Korkorina, and after being rejected by the Kirov[1] and Mikhailovsky Theatre, she joined the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre (SPBT), where she was taught by Svetlana Efremova. With this corps, she has toured internationally, playing mostly Odette/Odile in Swan Lake. Other roles in her repertoire include the title role and Myrtha in Giselle, Clara in The Nutcracker, Maria in St Petersburg's Nutcracker, Princess Aurora and Fairy Claire Bonté in The Sleeping Beauty, Kitri and Queen of Dryads in Don Quixote, Nikiya and Princess Gamzatti in La Bayadere, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Carmen in Her Name Was Carmen, Paquita, Chopiniana and others. On December 26, 2002 Kolesnikova made her London debut in Royal Albert Hall in St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre's Swan Lake. Dance critic Allen Robertson of The Times said: Irina Kolesnikova, star of St Petersburg Ballet Theatre's touring production of Swan Lake, has made a decision which throws the entire story into high relief. She portrays both Odette, the princess who is magicked into a swan, and Odile, her wicked impersonator, as if they really are birds... Kolesnikova's imperiousness has a ruthless, vicious nature. She's mesmerizing poor Siegfried rather than flirting with him. The result is as exciting and audacious as it is theatrically credible, even in a venue as large as the Albert Hall... Opulent and grand, Kolesnikova is a ballerina of prodigious technical strengths. Her dancing is writ large but never over-emphatic. Everything she does comes from deep inside her. In 2002, Irina Kolesnikova participated in international ballet competitions where she became a laureate of the following awards: Natalia Makarova Prize and the Silver Medal at Arabesque 2002 in Russia Silver Medal at the world-renowned International Ballet Competition in Varna[4] Gold Medal at the International Ballet Competition in Prague. Irina Kolesnikova with the Russian Ambassador to France, Alexander Orlov. February 6, 2012, Paris. In 2004 in St Petersburg there has been published the book of photographs "Irina Kolesnikova". It was dedicated to 10th anniversary of the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre and with introduction article entitled "Irina Kolesnikova my love" written by the Russian-American ballet critic and photographer Nina Alovert. In 2004 Kolesnikova was nominated for Prix Benois de la Danse for her performing role Kitri in Don Quixote. In 2005 Kolesnikova was nominated in London for a National Dance Awards as Best Female Dancer by the UK critics’ circle for her performing the role of Odette-Odile in Swan Lake. In 2005, Kolesnikova took place in V Japan International Ballet Competition in Nagoya where she won the Silver Medal. The Chief of Jury of this competition was a great Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. The front entrance of the National Theatre. February 21, 2020. Washington D.C. In 2006 St Petersburg Ballet Theatre (SPBT) released the first DVD with Irina Kolesnikova. Live performance of Swan Lake was filmed at the State Theatre in Pretoria on the 2nd of April 2006 during the first ever St Petersburg Ballet Theatre tour in South Africa. In 2007 St Petersburg Ballet Theatre (SPBT) released the DVD Giselle with Irina Kolesnikova. Live ballet was filmed at the State Theatre in Pretoria on the 16th March 2007 during the returning visit of St Petersburg Ballet Theatre to South Africa. In September 2007 she danced Sheherezade for the first time at the Gala des Etoiles du XXIe Siecle in Paris, partnered by Dmitri Semionov. Her coaches include Honoured Artists of Russia Alla Osipenko and Lubov Kunakova. In June 2008 Irina made her West-End debut in London at Apollo Theatre. As a guest star she was dancing the role of Hollywood legend Judy Garland in the contemporary production of choreographer Peter Schaufuss “DIVAS” from 19 June to 5 July. Debra Craine, the lead critic of The Times, in the review published on 27 June 2008 said: "...Irina Kolesnikova may present a statuesque and very Russian Garland, but she exudes the kind of grand personality (and sumptuous technique) that sweeps all before it. Charming and charismatic, she’s the one true diva…” On 17 May 2009 Irina made her debut on the stage of the London Coliseum. She was dancing the role of Nikiya in St Petersburg Ballet Theatre’s La Bayadere. On 6 February 2012, a dinner in honour of the Prima Ballerina, Kolesnikova, took place at the Russian Federation Ambassador’s residence, France with the presence of Alexander Orlov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to France. The visit was recorded by the State Russian Television and broadcast on Russian television on 13 February 2012. The previous night saw the end of the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre’s Paris season where, overall, the season included 15 sold out shows which were played to 48 thousand visitors. In 2020, Kolesnikova made her United States debut, performing at Howard Gilman Opera House BAM, New York City and National Theatre, Washington DC.” (en.m.Wikipedia)

My god, the dancer playing the Buffoon is superhuman! Well, they are all that, but he's super super human. Pure, unadulterated genius!

Excellent performance with top-notched technical, artistic (acting--rare on this level) expression, musical direction and choreography almost comparable to other great Russian ballet companies like Mariinsky and Boshoi!
