Wow…this is one of those moments where I cannot believe you haven’t heard a band. They just finished the inaugural residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas. Nice reaction! U2 are a hugely successful rock band from Dublin, Ireland. Comprising Bono (vocals), the Edge (guitar), Adam Clayton (bass) and Larry Mullen Jr (drums). They emerged in the early 80's and grew gradually more successful until by the mid 80's they had become well established and were one of the highlights of the 1985 live aid concert. They have gone in and out of fashion as is the way with bands that endure for such a long time. Some of my favourite early songs include - 'Into the heart', 'Out of control', 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' (from the 'Rattle and hum' live album is incredibly powerful and highly recommended!), 'Two hearts beat as one', 'A sort of homecoming' and 'Pride (in the name of love)'. I'm sure someone will recommend some of the later stuff but the early ones tend to get overlooked by reactors. Cheers.

Beautiful haunting lyrics about endless love with amazing vocals from Bono, excellent music video + the live version in italy were even better, and i still can't believe you never heard this song "With Or Without You" before. I believe the lyrics was about drugs addiction.

Both songs are about Bono's wife Ali Stewart Hewson - his real name is Paul David Hewson - and the challenges of loving a rockstar and being a rockstar who is married. "All I Want is You" is "our song" for my wife and I. We heard it first the night we met when watching the movie "Reality Bites" and it was our first dance wedding song. (Which I can't really recommend as it's 6+ minutes long with a long instrumental ending). That said I'd probably say "Where the Streets Have No Name" is still my all time fav U2 song followed by "AIWIU" and then "With or Without You." Add "Bad" and "A Sort of Homecoming" into the mix for a top 5 of the ages.

Great reaction, U2 is a proper rabbit hole. Their first 20 years from their debut album is outstanding. They moved with the times album on album changing their sound and image. Sometimes losing fans along the way but also gaining a lot of fans with their new direction. The song is written from Bono’s perspective of being a rock and roll frontman but also being a married man. Not being able to live without the one or the other. You need to do U2 live though they are arguably the greatest live band of all time You need to hear One Where the streets have no name Still haven’t found what I’m looking for Mysterious ways Stuck in a moment Vertigo

@CathyHolton-jh1xv

The “Infinite Guitar” was made by Edge’s friend, Michael Brooks. I own one that has a derivation of that system. WOWY is probably the only song where the infinite sustain system was put to great use. Radiohead uses a similar system on one of their guitars, but they haven’t come near what it’s done on this song.

@@CathyHolton-jh1xvits used a ton by The Church. It’s just an E-Bow. Edge’s innovation was to implement it in the guitar (like a modern sustainiac pickup) - so he didn’t have to hold the E-bow - the e-bow has been around since the 60’s though.
@CathyHolton-jh1xv
@CathyHolton-jh1xv 8 ай бұрын
@@zoeherriot I like the Sustainiac system. I’m not sure if you’ve ever used it, but it keeps all strings at the ready in the force field and the player has to control it. Play with a slide and use the tremolo and it sounds like an entirely different instrument. I play around with the Ebow every now and then, but switching strings takes a moment. The Sustainiac is always ready. I put the Sustainiac on an older, cheaper off-brand Stratocaster and it’s more satisfying. It’s like punting a midget when no one is looking.
@zoeherriot
@zoeherriot 8 ай бұрын
@@CathyHolton-jh1xv lol - yes, I’ve used it - it’s really cool. I know Ed O’brien of Radiohead has a signature strat with a similar system built in. It’s good enough that the Edge actually uses them on tour. :)

Basically, U2 took over where Led Zeppelin cut off, and they carried the banner of conscious rock'n'roll with an emphasis on conscience for the next 25 years. They aren't as improvisationally dazzling in some ways, but with a vast perspective and carefully crafted effects and meanings. They wrote anthems about both personal struggles/evolution and social/human-rights issues around the world. So many great songs! "Pride" "One Tree Hill" "Mothers of the Disappeared" "Bullet the Blue Sky" "God Part 2" "Rattle and Hum" "One" "Sunday Bloody Sunday" "The Fly" and on and on... They became such an important voice in human rights and policy that they were literally consulted by senators and prime ministers and top church leaders for inspiration and advice. Their fearless passion for the human condition, both personal and social, affected the world in important ways. They made it COOL to care... to REALLY CARE... what happens to both your own soul and your fellow humans right here on earth. Right now, you are living in a better age to some extent because they dared to stand up and challenge poeple to make better of themselves, inside and out, and to throw off the tyrant, both inside and out. The also had a sense of humor about themselves, and they made it fun... and perhaps that makes just as much difference.

The album this is from "The Joshua Tree" is their master piece . It is a don't skip a track album that is best listened to in one sitting to properly take it all in . For a Truly Emotional performance check out their performance of "Bad" at LIVE AID in '85 . Everyone always talks about Queen stealing that show but U2's performance that day was just as good . BTW the "whistling" tone is guitarist The Edge , playing & controlling his guitars feedback . He is not a traditional "shredder" type guitarist but he uses the instrument to "paint" colors of soundscapes on the bands songs .

It is hard for someone my age (.. college in the mid 80s ..) to think that someone has never heard of U2. That really seems impossible, but you are younger. Not only are they phenomenal artists .. but they have been world statesman for equality , peace and for feeding the hungry. They have large voices in the world of celebrities trying to make a difference. I will suggest one of my favorite songs for you... it is " Desire " .. from one of their early albums .. - Rattle And Hum - Looking forward to your discovery of U2. 🍀🔥🔥🔥🎼

My all time favourite rocky ballad (The only thing matching the feels for me these days is 'Daydreaming' by Band-Maid...also a little of that chiming guitar style early on). U2 were the biggest ticket in the world for a while...epic songs, Bono a great poet, and what comes to mind next is 'Pride (In The name of Love)'...their tribute to Martin Luther King.

I am sure this girl is very interested in the 1970s Northern Irish political shenanigans. Maybe you could link her to a collection of Ian paisley speeches. i am sure her seat will be soaking wet in minutes.

This song brings your heart in places it doesn't even imagine they exist... those places in wich you realize there's someone or something you can't live with or without. Everytime I listen to this song I feel a sort of "happy sadness"... it's a masterpiece. Greetings from Italy!

Great reaction as usual Stacey . I saw U2 at Wembley Stadium London in 1997 on the Popmart tour . It was spectacular complete with a 40 foot tall lemon which turned into a mirror ball that opened up to reveal the band inside . Crazy sight . 🙂

U2 is one of the real supergroups of all time. More than 20 years after the release of this song, they still sold out their 360 degree world tour at all the biggest venues. I saw them in Johannesburg in 2011 with a crowd of more than 100000.

This "whistle" sound in the back was the "infinite guitar" played by the Edge (only 3 made owns by the creator, the Edge and Daniel Lanois). You can hear it in the first part of the song and at the end. That sound saved the song as they were not convinced by the song. The Edge got the guitar, started to play and Bono, who was in a close room trying keep the song heard the sound and understood that was the key they were looking for.

Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart; you are a beautiful, Bright Angel letting the music flow through you and expressing how it touched your heart - so you are the music. All your hard work and commentary are greatly appreciated. Thank you for all the diversity of songs and genres you play. Try their song "It's A Beautiful Day".

Saw them on The Joshua Tree tour in 1986 at Wembley Stadium - London. No snazzy screens, or on-stage theatrics - just four musicians, playing to around 70000+ adore fans, and we sang along to ever song - for a live concert experience nothing matched it since. Now you feel its the show that is more important than the song - not then

Although U2 were already pretty famous before this album, when this single (and Joshua Tree album) was released in 1987, it was during an incredible era of rock music with many other seasoned artists and bands colliding on the charts. Dire Straits, Simple Minds, INXS and many, many more were releasing ew albums in the mid 80s and touring to larger arenas and more international locations . A magical time for rock music .

There was a time when we would go to the movies to watch U2's documentary: "Rattle and hum". It was awesome. Idk how we all already knew and loved all of their songs. They've always had that aura, sort of speak. U2 is basically a musical force, melodically, harmonically and pretty deep and emotional in terms of lyrics. Thanks for your reaction. It's clear that you get U2's vibes all over it.

One of my favorite bands of all time! Glad to see you getting exposed to their signature sound. The best Of 1980-1990/The B-sides is a double album CD i got in the very late 90s and almost all those songs are on my regular playlist. Pride (in the name of love) and Where the Streets Have No Name are two of my favorite iconic songs from that decade.

Nice reaction and a great introduction to U2. They were a huge band back in the 90s and 2000s, from Dublin, Ireland, but became probably the biggest band in the world and I'm quite astonished that you've never heard of them, even if you are in your 20s and haven't heard the songs they were still around when you were younger when becoming aware of music they were still around so you must have been living under a rock!!! The lead singer Bono is still one of the biggest rock stars in the world. Look forward to hearing you react to more of their music as they have so many great songs. Take care and have a great day.

Amazing song from an amazing album (best album of the 80's IMO). Saw them in Madrid on the Joshua Tree Tour in '87 when I was a 15-yr. old transfer student.
