Maybe I missed this point and need to rewatch, but: If the half-life of this drug is as short as the Dr. said, then it means Froome would have been taking puffs DURING the race. With all the camera's, that would be captured on video. What am I missing?
@planesandbikes7353

uh .. all the asthmatic riders have to take puffs of the salbutamol during the races. During the races is the ONLY time they need it. It is normal, it is allowed. Just can't take too many puffs in a short period of time.

Great podcast as usual but I don’t think you guys addressed the questions the fans wanted answers to, those being... Is there an epidemic of (cough cough) Asthma in the pro peloton? Does Froome use the puffer during races? And if so, are these during times of high exertion? Is there a history of abuse of asthma medication in pro cycling and/or pro sports in general? Is it possible to achieve (knowing the half life) 200% level just by puffing alone? Question for doc Does Salbutamol have other affects that could improve performance? Is it a masking agent? Etc etc. You guys had the doctor on board for the whole podcast, it would have been great to hear a bit more from him regarding how Salbutamol works and if an athlete wanted to 100% completely abuse the use of it then how would he go about it? I understand you may not want to speculate but this is all speculation at this point. It’s great to hear both your thoughts on the UCI and WADA but we all know that’s a messy relationship and hard to figure out. Appreciate the commentary

I need this off my chest after my earlier comment and i hope Lance reads it. I'm a Dutch cycling fan for over 28 years ( i am 34 years of age now ) and i watch every major cycling match from 1 day classics to Tour de France, Giro and Vuelta. That being said i can also say i have always been a huge Lance Amstrong and US Postal Fan from day 1, the way the team whas organized, the way Lance won his Tours ( not only by riding hard but also tactical and political in a way making alliances with other teams and just being "the Boss " in the peloton ) and the way they portrayed themselves back in those days as a team grew on me as a fan, i kind of wanted to be part of that. After the first rumours came out Lance doped, I have always had a clear position, and that position whas the same as Lance said over years "is there any evidence or prove " no there isnt, then STFU!! I have defended Lance against friends and colleagues against family and acquaintances, basicly every criticikaster who doubted Lance got a big mouth from me, and i would go toe to toe against anyone trying to fuck over my hero with false allegations. I did that because Lance gave people hope, lance gave me hope. Not only with Livestrong and all the other social activities he did outside cycling ( and he did allot of them and not all off them where money based i am sure of that ) but more with the attitude and the way of thinking he showed me that whatever u want in life is possible if u work hard for it and grab it when it is youre time to shine. That mentality showed me as a European that Americans will do everything in their powers to become succesfull in whatever they do, this can be Sports or businesses or even political. So beside Lance and the Us Postal team being a inspiration on the bike for me as a cyclingfan they also had made me realise a great fundamental lesson in life : without falling u will never understand and learn how to pick yourself up, never give up until you have the victory for the taking. So the Big day came and the Oprah Winfrey show with Lance came out Live in Holland ( 03.00 in the morning ) and for me after that show my life just stopped for 1 sec. I cant descibe it this well in english cause i am clearly not a native, but for me everything Lance and the Us Postal team gave me over the years just vanished after just a 40 min interview. My hope and love for cycling vanished, cause if my big hero doped.. who to trust? My feelings for cycling in general got a big hit. But much worse, all those criticasters that I have been attacking for years not to attack my hero came back from nowhere and massively, my twitter and facebook exploded with comments and I as a Lance fan was mercilessly tackled. It was so bad that It had come to a point that i needed to close my facebook and twitter account, some friendships have broken because of the big differences in opinion. After the interview with Oprah, I have not been able to watch cycling for a number of years because of the shame and humiliation I felt for defending a cheating player, while this cheating player meant so much more to me than just a cyclist, I felt betrayed by my hero. Now in 2018 we are already a few years further, and I can safely say that I have learned as a fan of that period, I am no longer angry or disappointed at Lance, he was just one of the many who doped, unfortunately for Lance he was the serpent's head and he had to be sacrificed ( he did that himself by being so agressive in the media ) Now after years i started watching this podcast cause i was very interested in what Lance is doing these days, and after seeing 4 shows repeatedly i am very happy to see he got a great show. the reason I write this (it has become a complete book by now haha ) is because Lance repeatedly says in this show that he wants to take responsibility for the doping perils we have right now concerning Froome. Please Lance, u have made a mistake, u have been punished for that and us fans with it but i always believed in taking responsibility for your own actions, and all cyclist who get caught right now should not be linked to Lance Armstrong. They should man up and take god damn responsibility for their own actions!! Lets face it, the witch hunt that followed after the oprah show was one of extraterrestrial proportions u havent murdered or raped anyone but yet all criticikasters went after u like hyenas. Do not feel responsible to dab anything and everything with doping and cycling because cycling and doping is much bigger than just Lance Armstrong, people must realise that by now. Keep up the good work with this show, and for me ( and i am just a meaningless fan from the Netherlands ) all is good!! Greetz

I always knew all tour riders sibce 1940 were doped, all, and all tbe stars Merckx, Anquetil, indurain, Hinault all of them and it never botheres me. Instead of lieing and protecting the pack or his sport,his defense should be from day 1, hey all of us take it and naming.them as a threat. He was so unfairly singled our it is unreal. But his self whipping confessing since Oprah I hate it.

This is almost funny, in that Sky and Froome may actually be worse than USPS and Lance. At least we knew Lance was a competitive thug, and never really acted like he was a clean, anti-doping, good guy puritan. He denied doping, sure. But even his fans would freely have admitted he was a total alpha dog, the killer. This whole nonsense that Sky has been pushing of them being some sort of clean team with only their great attention to detail that gets them ahead, and yet this was somehow a mistake, just a little detail they missed, is just nonsense. Sadly, because of greed, and corruption in the sport, it won't surprise me if the whole thing is whitewashed as a mishap, and he only receives a short off-season ban.

Pablo Gubert hats off man for been honest, me too was a asthmatic and thanxz to the cycling let me get through from it and hope u would also get totally well soon. Its a matter of letting go the inhaler @ right time though ur Drs prescribe no matter how well u are feeling as they earns tons of money just for writing that down. And more you keep faith on the pedals rather on the number of puffs ur body will adopt and its not a thing which u can't get rid of if u stick to the bicycle. We will be amazed if we got the real number of Puffs that Mr.Puffer (an elite professional athlete) has to puffed in-order to get to that level of salbutamol in his Urine (not in blood) so really proud of u on ur determination to not to fall on to "DNF" category @ the end of the day but don't take any risks while u racing or preparing for them by not taking ur inhaler to prove some shitty thing like "zero tolerance" as only by "puffs" i'm pretty darn sure that its impossible to raise the salbutamol level to that much and sure he takes through IV or just used it as a "masking agent" to hide a much worst doping scandal against him.
@allstar1411

except the Ulissi & Petacchi were both sanctioned for excess levels of Salbutamol. Both returned lower levels than Chris Froome. Same infringement, different rule. I don't think so, and I quite like Chris Froome but not his team who have always shouted about their zero tolerance. Wiggins was on very thin ice. Saved possibly by the doctors "missing" lap top.

It doesnt make you perform any better than you would without asthma. It opens up your airways to normal levels...it doesnt double them in size and give you an advantage which would be unfair. If i have a heavy cold and take medication to help me it doesnt make me something im not..it just relieves the symptoms to allow me to function. Storm in a teacup and hardly comparable to dopers sticking needles in their arms....!!

I feel for Lance. Deserves every one of his 7 titles. Been made a scapegoat when everyone knows that it was a level playing field. He didn't fail any tests. Did his research to find out where the loop holes are and maximized the outcomes. Trait of a genius. Did so much good along the way too with his foundation and for the sport of cycling. Those who tried to out him should have been up for the fight when they opened their mouths.

After reading the compelling book by David Millar, Riding in the Dark, Lance might consider him as a guest how to properly structure pro cycling. David gives you a rubber meets the road view of the rigors of pro cycling. These two elite riders could probably fix pro cycling over lunch if the stuck in amber regulating officials would only listen. Looking forward to more podcasts, Lance.

How stupid of Casey to say that this shouldn't have been leaked. The bigger question is why Sky and the UCI kept this under wraps for 3 months. Obviously, they were hoping to work something out to avoid another black eye, if possible. This just goes to show that it's the same old song with the UCI, worrying about covering their butts instead of practicing complete transparency. Have to give kudos to Maria Sharapova - at least she took the initiative to bring her positive test to light and deal with it instead of sticking her head in the sand and hoping it somehow wouldn't come out.
@SurpriseMeJT

eugkim1 I agree. Dylan believes that the sport is better off with dopers who don't get caught. He is for keeping the establishment. I do believe that the release of Froome's positive was politically motivated, however. BUT just because it was, doesn't mean we should discredit it. Drugs and politics with friends and aligning with the right powers all contribute to certain kinds of success in cycling it seems.

I have a hole in my heart. This means oxygenated blood back washes back to the lungs instead of oxygenating my muscles when exercising. Should I be allowed EPO to counter act this congenital defect in order to be competitive? Athletes should be allowed to do whatever they need to do in order to win. Anything that can produce marginal gains should be encouraged. Why should this or that person have the right to crush or judge peoples dreams of success.

Just seen this, a few days after CF's win in his case and Sky's release of his details and how he won Stage 19. What a fantastic discussion in the way it touches on all of the issues. The most interesting was who benefitted from the 'leak'. I believe you look no further than the bitter and twisted French who have not won their own race in 'forever' and then the Brits in the form of Sky appear, and crush all the rather precious traditional racers, many of which were drugged up to eyeballs, and that's leaving LA out of the equation. Just look at the track cycling scene, where the Brits having been strugglers for years, have crucified the traditional countries in the last three Olympics. And who screamed the loudest, the French of course! Keep up the good work, this is serious, knowledgeable and informed comment.

42.30: Lance - "Is there anything that we missed?". Are you kidding? I was salivating at the prospect of Lance's insight on this, but this is more or less 40+ minutes of hot air. These comments pop up more and more that the Salbutamol supposedly is just a masking agent. There is NO prove, NO research, NO evidence what so ever about this. Rightly said "Bona Zterchovej" riders are like robots whom were wired to the team car over a radio. They only responds to an attack or go for a break away or form an echelon only with the orders given by the team managers who are fully aware of what is happening miles ahead the pelaton, and above all every break away is comfortably caught near the finish line due to the help they get from radios. Yes they were existed in the past as well, but now there influence is so much and it is same as watching a car race where human factor is loosing sooo rapidly and riders are not place their own trumps evaluating the situation that they perceive through their sensors but by mere orders from their bosses.

How does one get that much of the drug into their system and have it measured that high if the half life is 2.5 hours? I've never seen a rider take puffs off an inhaler during a race and have been watching cycling for 30 years. And then, it raises your heart rate on top of it? That doesn't seem like a good thing for aerobic activity, including when measuring to ensure one doesn't enter the redzone. IF he was doping, my educated guess is that he was taking it in his water bottle/food during the race, whether he knew it or not. And they mis-dosed and/or mis-timed the dose and got caught.

The problem is, and the TdF knows this, a 'clean tour' would be boring as we watched people slog up mountains at 17kph/10mph. The Tour does not want this so it looks the other way.

Am I missing something here? I have not read (forgive me if someone has mentioned it, there are a tonne of comments to read through) anyone discussing the 'NEGATIVE' effects of salbutamol. It shifts K+ into the cells, out of the blood stream? When potassium ions go into the heart, it can stop it. Interesting research however, '...Salbutamol-induced hypokalemia was correlated with a decrease in RR, and an increase of Pv,O2 and PEF. These findings suggest that the same mechanism is involved in eliciting hypokalemia and bronchodilatation...' (Hung, CH et al 1999)

I have an invested interest in the French and it is personal to me however my experience is that the vast majority hate team sky and Chris Froome especially for dominating the Tour. I questioned this prejudice with a French family member and his response was " we also hated Bernard Hinault when he dominated the sport". This is just another witch hunt. Okay Mr Armstrong you got grassed up however everyone else was playing the same game. The UCI was out for Postal and now out for SKY, one question I have is did Postal have the most cash at their disposal against the other teams? Keep up the good work!

Having UCI is no different to Motorsport having the FIA (interesting to note these bodies tend to be French). Formula One, for instance, has no tracks or arenas to use Lance's parlance, they also use venues they don't own or manage. So therefore the current managing arrangement is no different than the Motorsport world.

Good to have you back Bob! This epidemic of elite endurance athletes having "asthma" is a discussion that needs to be had. I mean come on! Despite my distaste for Team Sky, I cannot imagine that the staff were not aware of the limit of puffs Froome could take. I agree that it could perhaps have been that Froome took a few extra puffs because he was really having breathing problems. But twice the limit? Probably a pill, which means doctors. Team Sky is crooked as a stick in the water.

Lance there were proper studies done on the use of salbutamol by cyclists.... here is an article published in 1996 in in the European journal of physiology and occupational physiology: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8781870. Quote from the abstract: "No significant differences were observed in any of the dependent variables related to aerobic endurance or cycling performance between the S and P conditions. These results support other findings that an acute dose (400 micrograms) of S has no performance-enhancing properties."

Roids isn't a problem in athletics, doping, whatever...it's all about the best person wins, by a margin of what they do to get there, what they sacrifice, being in athletics isn't being in it for health reasons, there are healthy benefits but not when you're competing. I don't know why people get their panties in a bunch.

First this was a positive urine analysis? Urine excretion can cause a concentration levels detected and with a minimum sample usually around 40 ml one could calculated this stuff. Plasma concentration and the actual therapeutic levels could be much different. The current ADME-tox knowledge of this drug it would be possible to use standard pharmacokinetic models to try to recreate the puff gate and determine if used within medial guidelines.

There are reasons why the druggy image hangs over cycling. If they made all drugs ok( removing drug controls), parents would not encourage their kids to compete. The sport would die. TBI in American football has seriously threatened the future of their sport. Parents hesitate to throw their kids into the crosshairs of a sport with a history of drug use.

I’ve always suspected that there’s a fast acting drug in the bidons, something that also flushes out of the system really quickly. No one ever goes around checking the bottles that the riders throw away on the stages. Perfect way to cheat.

Taking away the power meters and putting some restrictions on radios would certainly help make racing-certainly stage race ridng more exciting.Look at Froome and Sky-their function depends on working as one like a colony of ants.9 elite level riders of specific type have the numbers available throughout the stage-advising them of where their at physically.Take these away and those riders would all have to race on feel-something I feel is missing from recent times and making it easy for the richest teams to control stage races,in particular GTs.Classics and one day races are far less effected by them as endeavour is more often rewarded.Intuitive racing and racing on feel-rather than merely having an elite level physique should be a key component in a champions makeup.I'm all for teamwork-heck great teams have been a part of racing for generations.However when PMs are used by the richest teams with the best squads then the racing script is mapped out for them.It's becoming impossible for great riders on anything but the strongest team to win the biggest stage races as the margin for error for these teams-employing their safety first tactics has been eliminated for the by technology.PMs are great for training but should be prohibited from racing.GTs are being won in the classroom,by the cheque book and going the way of formula 1.Froome was able to use 2 juggernaut teams to tow him around 2 consecutive Grand Tours.A recovered Contador for example didn't only have to think about dropping Froome in the Vuelta-but also eliminating his superteam (all armed with data to hand telling them how deep to go!) As for the Tour-the race for GC was awful with barely anyone making a move.Only the short stage to Foix-when Landa went away with Contador offered any real excitement,with regards to the top ten.

I think there is a bigger, more philosophical, discussion to be had about doping or performance enhancing drugs. On the one hand, there is our biology. Some people's biology and genetics result in a higher vo2max than others. Some people's biology results in having asthmatics. Why should the one be corrected for and the other be hailed as it is?

Nobody as come up with the fact that someone may have nobbled his test with more of the drug. He is not liked by many in the sporting countries and he is wining to many races. Don't say that it could not be done every thing is possible if you know the right people and you have money. Seeing we don't know only Chris knows what he did and he says he did not . So something happened and I do not like the timing of it all seems odd to me.

Another important question this raises and it is not really being addressed....does everybody have a right to compete as an athlete(pro or am)?...think about this...a guy has very low Testosterone at the level of a women so far below the low marker...this effects metabolic rate, ED, numerous other blood/hormone values that directly impact quality and length of life...the person gets as prescribed by doctor regular testosterone injections which help all the issues and raises the testosterone levels to within the normal range...so other then getting a TUE approved which may or may not happen, the starting point is according to the rules testosterone is prohibited and the rider would be sanctioned...if the answer is well not everybody should be able to compete, then consider if someone has naturally extremely high testosterone...that person would be allowed to compete and most likely have advantages over others with lower testosterone...no matter how you come down on this one this clear, anyone who says "needs to be a level playing field" is naive or stupid...next question is what and who defines fair...great one Lance keep them coming
@waynosfotos
@waynosfotos 6 жыл бұрын
huntingsynth It has nothing to do with fair..... The rules are set and you choose to compete, in the set rules, this is the same with all sports. It is the same as a tri bike can not be used, as it is not UCI sanctioned. The rules are clearly explained and studied by the teams. They know what they must comply too. Break the rules, you have cheated. Plain and simple
@huntingsynth
@huntingsynth 6 жыл бұрын
wayne proud that's my point...the rules are the problem and more to the point the people and bodies who govern the rules are more inclined to make decisions that serve other interests than just address the issue at hand...and anything in life that excludes I have a problem with it...I'm not a liber but people should be able to compete and be healthy...here's an interesting idea although it would only work with the relative small numbers at the pro level...all riders go through rigorous tests every few years with group of doctors where all medical concerns are openly discussed and a personal physician and the governing body physician agrees on an appropriate protocol that first addresses the health concerns and second allows for fair competition...they could even have all prescriptions come through the governing body physician with more controls...in the end the current rules and system does not work and just creates a preloaded antagonistic relationship...if cycling and sport wants to get out of the downward spiral they need to change the tune...Merry Christmas y'all

The thing missed here is the history of Team Sky saying they will use things like TUEs to gain advantages. The Team itself has questionable practices and if they can see a gain then they will abuse it. No doubt they over worked Froome to get bad asthma attacks with the double attempt, like look at what that did to Quintana. So I'd not be surprised if his asthma was so bad and Sky couldn't get a TUE they gave him some type of injection or pill to control it. Because the doctor makes a good point, this has never happened in his past before and the amount is outrageous so something is definitely suspect. Also given the recent Wiggins controversy, the timing is just odd. But definitely, I can see the French sick of the British winning the TDF that they would leak this (with the regards to the leak). Same shit happened with the DQ of Sagan, Damare did the irregular sprint causing Sagan and Cav to crash and then did another irregular sprint the next stage and no penalty. Idk, it's just the perfect storm of speculation haha
