I love the symbolism when we see Arthur climbing the stairs earlier in the film. It's a mental struggle because of how miserable he is, how much effort it takes to keep his head straight in a world that does not give a shit about him. But the dance downwards is him just giving in the madness in himself. He does it with such a relief and enjoys himself. Just accepting that this is who he is. A man no longer struggle upwards, but dancing downwards.

Well, but... he's still wearing the face paint, and he was running from the detectives seconds before. I see that moment as more a reflection of Joker's lack of allegiance or beliefs. Here he embraces the Joker and not until the last minutes of the movie we see him truly unleashed. What a beauty of a film indeed.

Well. First, losing his medications, like his ideals of his mother being stripped away from him wasn’t a positive thing for his sanity, second, he was fully intending to go on tv to shoot himself in the face. It was a dance of freedom into the arms of death. Not into the arms of “the joker.” The director and Joaquin said he wasn’t fully “the joker” till he was dancing on the cop car. And embracing chaos and madness doesn’t set you free. Believe me. I have tried. It is a masterpiece of a film I’ll give you that, but I came away from it like “whoaaaaaa I’m way too much like Arthur I have got to get my shit together if I’m gonna keep on living.”

This stairs is actually symbolical to the whole plot of the movie, as you can see in the beginning, you see Arthur, coming up, looking so depressed, you can see the emptiness on his face. This is him, trying to "go up" into the level of society, trying to fit it as much as he can. But on this scene, shown in the video, he now gladly accepts himself more than before. He now gladly accepts that society will treat him lowly no matter how hard he tries. So as he walks down the stairs, he is now on a positive attitude, compared to when he was rising from it.
@taylorhennebury30363 жыл бұрын
I looked at the stairs as mental health. When you're trying to better yourself (climb up the stairs) it's hard and it's grueling. But the descent down into madness (the walk down the stairs) is so much more easier and carefree. Like a dance.
