THANKS HARRI! As always you find the deep meaning of this track. Stan touches anyone/everyone. Stan's passing in an Airplane fire was an incalculable loss. He defined what it was to be Canadian for so many people. My indigenous half wishes he took up the issue but his song writing, voice and finger picking are genius. Lock Keeper is a metaphor. Stan uses the idea of the sea going man compared to the land bound man to describe life as a touring musician. The lure of the road versus the lure of home.

Stan wrote that song because he was tired of singing the chorus in the Sea Shanty's hanging out with the Friends Of Fiddlers Green.

Stan is considered an honorary Nova Scotian- his parents left their native NS and went to Ontario for work. They returned to Guysborough county most summers when he was growing up, hence his love of the sea and the working man. There is a Stan Rogers Festival every summer in Canso, NS. Try "The Mary Ellen Carter" for an uplifting song, it helped me keep going after being laid-off from my job.

Sailing into Bermuda we played "The Flowers of Bermuda", fortunately with a different outcome. He also does songs about hockey ("Flying"), the War of 1812 ("The Nancy", "Billy Green The Scout" true story, "MacDonnell On The Heights" true story), refinery work ("The Idiot"), the environment ("Tiny Fish For Japan"), conscientious objectors ("Harris And The Mare"), rural life ("Watching The Apples Grow", "The Field Behind The Plow") and many, many more before his career, which was just starting to take off, was cut short when he died in a burning plane in 1983 at the age of 33.

What a beautiful voice and a profound song. This brought back wonderful memories of visiting Songo Lock in Naples, Maine, where I vacationed with my best friend and her family throughout my childhood and teens. Thanks Harri and Adam 🌺✌️

Being a Canadian from Newfoundland, Stan Rogers is a legend in this neck of the woods. Many of his songs hit-close-to-home here. IMO, he is in the conversation with Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot as Canada's greatest songwriters and vocalists. So very sad that he left us so early in career. I highly recommend listening to "45 Years" by him. His voice and haunting. For song-writing, I highlight recommend "The Mary Ellen Carter" and "The Witch of the Westmoreland".

Stan's "Lock Keeper" was inspired by the Welland Canal and Saint Lawrence Seaway that are pivotal to Great Lakes freight transportation. Beautiful song!
