How To Yield The Right Of Way: 4-Way Stop Basic Rules & Best Practices For Safe Driving To Pass Test!
4-way stops are a big cause of confusion and accidents. 4-way stops (or, all-way stops as some people call them) require everyone that comes to such an intersection to yield to other vehicles under specific circumstances. Even experienced drivers don't always know what the rules are in certain situations. In this video, I show some of the different scenarios you might encounter at a 4-way stop intersection. I'll explain who has the right-of-way, who should go next, and talk about some best practices. Knowing what to do can prevent accidents and even save lives. This is also something new drivers will need to know and possibly demonstrate on a driver's test. I strongly urge new drivers to take the time to find some 4-way stop intersections near them and practice the driving skill of yielding the right-of-way. I see drivers almost every day who don't seem to know the rules, or just don't think they apply to them. If you're at least familiar with the rules, you can be the safe driver out there even if others aren't. Be the good example, not the problem!
Thank you for watching!

The basic rule of Yielding the Right of Way is that if two vehicles arrive at a 4-way-stop intersection at the exact same time, then the vehicle on the right gets to go first. The vehicle on the left is yielding the right of way to the vehicle on their right. In this video, we look at some of the other situations that commonly come up at 4-way intersections, and who has the right of way.

The “yielding right of way” term confuses me. I thought it meant the person on your right goes first? But in the video he states whoever gets at the intersection first makes the first move.
@thelaseringtrespiker4006

@@QueenYemithat’s only prevalent on whether or not an intersection is full. in general terms it’s whoever gets there first goes, but also depending on if cars are turning or staying straight or carrying big loads, sometimes it changes on the vehicle to the right of you or just whoever feels like moving cuz they’re ignorant and in a rush.

Great explanation, coming from England to Canada I came across these kinds of intersection for the first time. In England, when you do have a four way intersection, they'll have traffic lights, every time. More often though, there'll be a roundabout instead, which effectively acts like a three way junction but smoother because you don't have to come to a complete stop if there's no one approaching from your right. With the density of traffic in England I couldn't possibly imagine these working there without bringing everything to a halt (which is presumably why we don't have any), but now that I know about these, I'll be better able to handle them in Canada!
@HowSkills

Roundabouts are safer than 4-way stops, and I wish there were more around us. We have a few in bigger cities, but not enough overall in my opinion. Thanks for watching and for leaving the great comment, and enjoy Canada!

One thing I want to know is: When you say “the person who got there first” do you mean the person that got in the line first or who actually got to the stop sign first because there’s sometimes lines before the intersection
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 3 жыл бұрын
That means the person that stopped at the stop sign (or the white stop line if there is one) first is the one that should go first before other vehicles arriving close to the same time. A white stop line takes precedence over the stop sign and determines where your actual stopping point will be. It doesn’t matter when you got in a line leading up to the intersection, only when you arrived and stopped at the sign or line controlling the intersection.

Wow this helped me a whole bunch, thank you SO much 🙌 Edit actually I do have a question though, does yielding mean that if its your turn to go then your signaling to the other drivers when it's your turn? Unless you are going straight
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 2 жыл бұрын
You do need to use your signals if you'll be turning right or left, and otherwise you just let other drivers go before you (yield to them the right to go before you do} if they arrived at the intersection before you did. In the event you arrive at the same time as another driver, the person to the right gets to go first, so in that case, the driver on the left would yield the right of way to the driver to their right.

Hi! I have had my license for a little while now, and I have moved to a place that has a lot of four way stops. I find myself very nervous at them because it seems like the cars around me are going even though it's my turn- especially if I stop for a few seconds. Any advice?
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Since there are a lot of four way stops in your area, the local driver's there may have become very impatient with having to stop so often so they don't wait like they should. And, if people are in that much of a hurry, just let them go. When you get to the stop sign that controls you, make a full and complete stop, but don't linger if it's your turn to go. Other driver's take any hesitation as a sign that you want them to go ahead and go. Make sure you scan the intersection ahead of you as you're driving up to your stop sign, and pay close attention to who is arriving ahead of who so you'll be prepared to leave the stop sign when it's really your turn. But if someone leaves when it's not their turn, don't take it personally or let it get you upset or mad. Driving angry is dangerous to you and those around you, and it's just not worth it.
@bring156
@bring156 3 жыл бұрын
Why do so many people think they can turn left in front of a person going straight through the intersection? So much road rage comes from this and lots of bad accidents. Sometime I think it’s a case where someone thinks they arrived a fraction of a second before the person going straight but again that just creates a lot of issues in my opinion.
@HowSkills

A lot of people really don't understand the rules for yielding at a 4-Way stop. And others just don't act like they don't apply to them. So always proceed through a 4-Way intersection with caution when there are other vehicles arriving at about the same time. You're responsible for doing what you know is correct...just watch out for those that aren't doing the right thing for whatever reason!

Thanks for sharing. In the video it can be seen that if a vehicle came to the stop sign and the other vehicle on the other side is still rolling towards their stop line, then the first vehicle waits until the rolling vehicle appears to stop. -- Sometimes I have seen people moving from STOP line if they arrive first and the other vehicles on other sides are slowing down but yet to reach the stop line. -- This makes me wonder if one should come to complete stop, wait and see other cars coming to a stop as well, and then proceed to their turn?

It's okay to go ahead and leave from the STOP line as long as you have already come to a complete stop and it is your turn to go.

You forgot to mention that if all 4 cars arrive at an ALL WAY STOP at the exact same time (although unlikely), right of way is given to the vehicle to your right

I'm 42 and have been driving since I was 16, but yesterday I came to a 4 way stop with stop signs where I pulled up at the same time as 2 other cars. Very rare scenario for me. I was sitting there with my left turn signal on for a while, and the other drivers were just sitting there. I was waiting for them to go. I didn't want them to honk at me, and I was pretty intimidated. Nobody was behind me, so I backed up and turned around so they could all go and I could try again. Came back to the intersection and another car pulled up across from me at the same time. Again, my left turn signal was on, didn't really know what to do, didn't want them honking/getting angry, and I was waiting for them to go but they were just sitting there. Nobody was behind me so I backed up and turned around to try a third time. (No I'm not an idiot/stupid, I have a 124 IQ.)

That's always an awkward situation to be in when no one knows for sure who should go first. In your first situation, one of the three cars at the intersection was the farthest one to the right of the others and should have gone first. In a case like that where the person that's supposed to go first doesn't actually go, then you could give them a hand wave to signal them to go ahead and proceed. If they still don't, then the person next to them should go, being next in line. But if no one makes a move, it's okay for you to inch out slowly and then go on your way. It's not rude to go ahead and go after you've given the other driver(s) the opportunity. In the second instance, although you both arrived at the same time, and assuming the other vehicle was going to go straight, they would have the right-of-way since you would be turning across their path if you went first. In case of two vehicles arriving at the same time across from each other, the one turning left should yield to the one going straight. But I know in a real-world situation that it's not always that cut and dried, and if you're not sure when to go, try to signal the other drivers to go on and take their turn. And if they don't go, then it's perfectly fine for you to be the one to go...just ease out slowly.

There's a roundabout around my place, and all 4 sides have yield signs...I've never seen that. How does that work?
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 4 жыл бұрын
Normally it means that anybody entering from any side has to yield to anyone already in the roundabout. Enter when there is a gap and it’s safe to do so. Roundabouts have actually been proven to be safer than 4-way stop intersections, causing fewer accidents!
@crazyoncoffee
@crazyoncoffee 4 жыл бұрын
VisualxxKhaos That works like any normal roundabout. Yield to any cars already in the roundabout. When it’s clear and you can enter the roundabout, go. All other cars have to wait on the side roads. If you come at the same time as someone to your right, the person on the right goes first, just like with a 4 way stop. If 2 cars approach on opposite sides of the intersection, with a roundabout both cars can usually enter the roundabout at the same time and complete their maneuvers as they are in opposite sides of the circle. The most important thing to remember is to yield to any cars currently in the roundabout, then take your turn when there is a gap in traffic in the circle

Dear Stan, Thank you for your very helpful video. Can you please explain the situation at 5:45? The car opposite you wants to turn left, so shouldn't you have priority over it? Also, why did you not yield right of way to the red car, which was to your right? Thank you very much in advance, I am driving my first car tomorrow and I am freshening up on my Right of Way knowledge. :)
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 3 жыл бұрын
The first rule about the Right of Way is that whoever arrives at the intersection first, regardless of their position related to you, gets to proceed first. And if there were three other vehicles that also came to that intersection slightly after you did, then whoever arrived 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, gets to go in order after that. Although this clip in the video doesn't show it, the car opposite me had arrived at the intersection and stopped before I arrived and stopped, so they got to go before I did. The car to the right of me had arrived and stopped after I got there, so I had the right to go before them. "First come - First served", is the main rule at an intersection...if you get to the intersection first before other vehicles, you get to proceed before they do. The other rules only apply when two or more vehicles arrive at the exact same time at a 4-way stop. In that case, whoever is to the farthest right goes first, and so on according to the other situational guidelines. It can be a little complicated, that's for sure, but remember that if you get to the intersection before any of the other vehicles, you get to proceed first, whether they're on your right or on your left. If you arrived at the exact same time that a vehicle to your right did, they get to go before you do. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, please ask!

some people just do a rolling stop, especially if they do not see any other cars aside from them. i am guilty of this because the person who taught me how to drive used to say I can go because there are no other cars. i have to be better at this.
