Tai Chi has become an important exercise solution for people of all genders, shapes, sizes and ages. It doesn't harm the joints, and it also involves mindfulness and stress relief. To support Harvard Health Publishing's upcoming report on Tai Chi basics, Harvard's Dr. Peter Wayne and Tai Chi master Stanwood Chang describe and demonstrate essential Tai Chi moves

It helps so much to hear Dr. Peter Wayne's narrative of each movement and explanation. I personally appreciate this very much; the imagery

Some great exercices there ! I'd like to add a word of warning for the exercise at 5:08. I would really advise against "dropping" with the knee collapsing inside as it seems to be the case in the video (probably even more so if you try this at home or you are a beginner). This would add an excessive pressure on the inside of the leg (and knee, and ankle), possibly leading to long term damage if repeated frequently. The easiest way to fix this is to be hips width, instead of shoulder width and therefore have the knee "sliding" forward only (not further than your toes).

These are good Qi gong art forms and another way to loosen up those muscles ... Also, they are good movements to open up the blood flow to the back and upper and lower extremities. I would personally do this before and after Tai chi, and maybe after a good sweat routine like picking up things in the garden. Then, I think I'd only start by doing a couple or a few of these movement s with little or no effort except for flexing maybe, and light tonal sculpting in any additional sense. It is also good to look at what you are doing and really feel how it feels right, not cold or un- lateral movements. Eat some food before and after to, in order to have sustenance. Then you can go!

How is it that this guy is teaching Taiji for Harvard? Very sad state of affairs!

He was probably involved in the studies Harvard conducted on the health benefits of Tai Chi and the subsequent book.

This video training had potential...very technical in teaching the movements. Unfortunately, typical of a Western scientific/academic interpretation of a holistic Eastern art, it suffers from almost completely ignoring the absolutely essential coordination of the breathing and chi with the movement. This would be the most basic teaching, just imitating the movements. But learning the breathing while moving, from the beginning, is how it has been traditionally taught for 1000s of years. Disappointing from Harvard.

Harvard published a book that went into deep detail about each exercise. That’s where you get that information. Also trying to force a breathing pattern doesn’t help. As you relax into each exercise and get comfortable your natural breathing will happen.
