fuck the oscars. Okay, I know they're prestigious and a lot of people that win them are pretty good( coppola, spielberg, de niro , nicholson) but still, it's great that he at least got an oscar, cuz a lot of fantastic directors never got oscars like hitchcock, lumet, paul thomas anderson. Heck, Martin Scorsese barely won. He was consistently regarded as the best director throughouth the 70-90s and is still one of the best of all time(my favourite). HE finally won in 2007, but he was beyond a legendary director at that point.

And the Only reason he got this award was because the Academy wouldn't give everyone on the Special Effects Team an award, so Kubrick accepted the award on behalf of the Team. It really wasn't his Category. He should've won for Best Director and Best Picture.

It's a shame that 2001 wasn't even nominated for best picture that year. At the end of the day, the Oscars shouldn't determine what is a good or bad film. It was a film that was very mixed from both critics and audiences during its initial release, but as time has gone by, 2001 is now regarded as a classic by both critics and audiences. For me and many others, we consider it one of the best, if not the greatest film to have ever been made.

***** You were going great until you got to Kill a Mockingbird--which is two different movies strung together AND overrated. Thumbs down for Blade and Alien. And I don't believe neither Godfather nor Exorcist are overrated, although I do not consider either a "great" film. Godfather has a lot to say on a political level that may not have been apparent to audiences or even critics at the time, while Exorcist has some very intelligent dialogue (I recently watched it on the big screen) that was lost in the mire of (at that time) barrier-breaking profanity.

The reason why Kubrick wasn't there is cause he is afraid of been on airplanes, but he is still an Academy Award winner even though he didn't win for direction. I mean look at Hal Ashby he is a Academy Award wining director who won only for Film Editing and we should be proud of that along with Kubrick wining for Visual Effects.

Kubrick was a true artist who didn't give a flying f**k about prizes which signified success as a social leverage and never paraded around amid his achievements. He was interested almost solely in the color and the shape of the art he was creating, thus spending eons in fixing up the tiniest details, passively directing his actors off-camera for them to be able to access the required mindset and never watching his films upon completion. However debatable, his quirkiness was a direct indication of his ability to grasp what appeared to the rest of us as intangible - a trait that made his works unparalleled among his contemporaries. Only few directors - or artists of any area for that matter - share the same level of insight, attention to the significance of the details, passion and persistence to perfect everything - and such warped view on narration. Prizes such as Oscars have nothing to do with such elements, and - in a certain way - constitutes an antithesis to such visionary talent Kubrick possessed.

I understand 2001 was not nominated for best picture and best director because it was a tough and complex movie at the time. Divided opinions and only became a cult movie years after. Ok, I comprehend that. But the Academy Award should've give to the man a Honorary Award years after for lifetime achievement, like they did with Kurosawa. Kubrick died in 1999 without receiving a proper recognition from the Academy. They did the same with Hitchcock. A terrible mistake.

I don't really get why this surprises anyone...the Academy Awards are notorious for shunning the science-fiction genre. Generally, the only awards sci-fi films get are in visual effects, costume design and maybe sound editing. Look at Star Wars for example, probably one of the most enduring and successful sagas of all time, yet it only got a few oscars for SFX, music and editing...This was the same year Planet of the Apes got snubbed for best costume design.

One of some dozen nominations he probably should have been awarded 90% of, but nevertheless possibly the most important one of them all. I mean, screw the academy. It's odd how people still kind take the oscars seriously, while the grammys are a clear joke on the other hand. Screw "best picture", too. It doesn't really mean much to be nominated anymore and in retrospect, with all their biases, I'm not sure it truly meant much then, though I'm sure film historians will disagree with me. On the other hand, when you pop in 2001 on Blu-Ray...when you're greeted with this 70mm transfer that looks amazing; looks (save for the color) like it could have been shot yesterday, with one of the greatest SFX sequences of all time at the end...it all still holds up so well visually, which is what Stanley was about more than anything. He didn't care to write his own stories, he didn't care to conform to either obtuse or conventional filmmaking, he wasn't picky with his actors, etc. Filmmaking to him was exactly what it says on the tin. What you saw in the frame during the finished product was more important than the elements contained within. He basically possessed the camera in a way few directors cared for prior to the late 80's through early 00's and wasn't pretentious about it or anything like the far too many sycophantic, cult-like admirers he has today providing their version of what they think was in his head. Sure, it should have swept best picture, director, *actor for Doug Rain holy fuck*, et al but if I had to pick one award to put it to as a standard, it's this.

What bugs me about the Oscars is the fine print that determines who is eligible for them. Doubtless Kubrick should have been included among the winners for best visual effects because of his artistic vision, relentless standards, and background in photography, but truth be known, he went digging around the National Film Board of Canada personnel to find out how they had achieved the effects in 1960's 'Universe' and tried to consult Gerry Anderson about the effects work in 'Thunderbirds'. The team he assembled to achieve the effects he had in mind - Con Pederson, Wally Veevers - and here's a REAL Oscar injustice: Douglas Trumble - are legends, and should have been on the stage with him. Hell, Geoffrey Unsworth could have been there too just for the sheer genius involved in shooting the 'Dawn of Man' sequence entirely against front projected backgrounds.

Sadly, due to Academy regulations in place at the time, no more than three statuettes were issued in any one category. 2001 had four Directors of Special Effects (Tom Howard, Douglas Trumbull, Wally Veevers and Con Pederson), one of which was my grandfather. While Stanley Kubrick was very deserving of recognition as an outstanding director, I remain saddened that my grandfather did not receive the official recognition for this film he deserves. Putting it another way, the four men who were Special Effects Directors on 2001 did not receive Oscar's although the film received the award for Special Effects. To my knowledge, this remains the only time in Academy history that the principal Director in the category in which the film received an Oscar, did not win the Oscar him or herself.

everytime some guy watches "2001...", and says "oof, that's some cool and detailed visuals for 1968", that's a tribute to genius people like Mr. Howard and his team who worked so hard for making a movie like this a reality. Stanley Kubrick is just a symbol for his team of brilliant people following his instructions to make masterpieces. That oscar belongs to people like Mr Howard. Respect! ♥

Agreed. Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey credit of; "Special Photographic Effects Designed and Directed by..." is a misnomer. Crucially, Kubrick's sole Oscar win for Special Visual Effects was a bone of contention. The designation of "Special Photographic Effects Supervisor" credited to Mr. Howard, Trumbull, and Pederson doesn't provide due deference for their contributions. Douglas Trumbull said; "There was a certain level of inappropriateness to taking that Oscar...Kubrick did not CREATE the visual effects. He DIRECTED them."(emphasis is my own). Although Trumbull was overwhelmingly positive about his experiences on 2001, and Kubrick in general, that perceived snub chilled any further working relations between the two. I'm quite confident Mr. Veevers, Mr. Pederson, and Mr. Howard were of the same mind as Mr. Trumbull, if not vocally. That being said, you can console yourself to the fact that your grandfather is, and always will be two time Best Special Effects Academy Award Winner for "Blithe Spirit" 1948, and "Tom Thumb" 1958. Cheers!

If Kubrick had been allowed to make his Napoleon film after 2001, if MGM had been prepared to put up the large budget, that would have been the sort of large scale epic film which might have won Best Film and Best Director as well as the Oscars Barry Lyndon won.

Actually the only reason he didn't go was because he hated flying and was living in England at the time. Had he been in America he probably would have went and accepted it himself. From what I've read about him, he seemed to be pretty laid back about stuff like this.
