@@agentoftheccp9958 CryEngine is very CPU intensive and CIG made a lot of the code multithreadable thats why high CPU core counts (like AMD Ryzen) actually perform better than some of the Intel ones with high single core performance. So yes, SC and SQ42 will run well with more cores. Storage capacity has indeed nothing to do with performance, but storage speed does. Since SC and SQ42 is continuously streaming data from drive into memory and vise versa, SSD is highly recommended. The new SSDs in the PS5 is very fast and is build directly toward such high bandwidth streaming cases in mind. Which will benefit SC and SQ42. So SQ42 should be possbile to run on the new PS5 console hardware.

Oh, also! To address your notes: I was calling it "Star Citizen" still at that point because that's the name by which people know it, and I didn't want to have to introduce the fact that there were two different games so early. They asked the backers to vote on whether or not to continue crowdfunding, but it seemed like they were poised to do it anyways, so I just stated that it continued. I know the Bengal is the largest, I was more referring to what they had shown in-engine. I definitely could have been clearer about that, though. I know that number of ships pledged doesn't equal backer count, which is why I specified that it was the number of packages purchased. I was working off of the number of "Star Citizens" on the website, which, as I understand, doesn't directly correlate to number of backers. I know vertical slices aren't necessarily representative of all features, otherwise I wouldn't have called it a vertical slice. =P The mention of missing features was to put it in context.

Fredrik Knudsen I accept that, Kore is teh bestest :D "I was calling it "Star Citizen" still at that point because that's the name by which people know it, and I didn't want to have to introduce the fact that there were two different games so early." Eh, well.. okay, fair enough. I personally would've said it's different, and then would've explained it later. "They asked the backers to vote on whether or not to continue crowdfunding, but it seemed like they were poised to do it anyways, so I just stated that it continued." CR seems to like to take the will of the people by heart, even putting up a second vote at 40 mil(?) to see if people still wanted crowdfunding, and there was still a majority for yes, and therefore, it still continued. "I know the Bengal is the largest, I was more referring to what they had shown in-engine. I definitely could have been clearer about that, though." They have shown the latest version of the Bengal, multiple times now, in Starengine. In fact, iirc there's a whitebox for the pegasus, and the Javelin is almost as far along as the Idris from what I understand (it's going to be in the first ep. iirc), so that would put the Idris at least at #3, if not #4 if you count the pegasus, not #1. "I know that number of ships pledged doesn't equal backer count, which is why I specified that it was the number of packages purchased. " This number is not released. The 1.1 million you referred to was the backer count.Star Citizens has nothing to do with the amount of purchased packages, as the number of Citizens does not increase with the amount of purchased packages, but rather it increases with the amount of paid backers. A single backer can buy 800 packages and it would only move up by one once that backer becomes a paid backer. "I know vertical slices aren't necessarily representative of all features, otherwise I wouldn't have called it a vertical slice. =P The mention of missing features was to put it in context." Missing features is inherent to vertical slices. It's a milestone in development, it's not meant to show all of development. That's why what you said was contradictory.

One day I took a call from a woman who was calling to cancel a backorder for her husband that he had been waiting to be fulfilled for an EXTREMELY long time (I want to say about 18 months, but I could be misremembering). As this was no problem, I went through the cancelation procedure, and had to ask her about the order to fill out the required form. When I asked her "What is the reason you are canceling the order?," she sighed, and took a very long pause. Her husband had been sick for some time, and had died the week prior. I was stunned. I said that I was sorry for her loss, and as I processed the cancellation, I made a mental note that if I ever took ill, that I'd wait till I recovered before putting my money down on a backorder for a Rickenbacker guitar.

No Man's Sky knew they had to release something, and they did, they instead of delaying the game more opted to release a rather shoddy first impression but kept working on it and improving it until, now, it's a pretty good game, making good on a lot of its initial promises. I’m sure they’ll be a controversy or two over some missing feature when it eventually gets released, but for a game that promises so much, such is inevitable. I have a feeling they will release SOMETHING though. Just because it guzzled obscene amounts of money and was delayed many times doesn’t mean it won’t succeed. Plenty of games like that have ended up fine in the end (though admittedly, very few of them were crowd funded or indie), people just like to talk about the ones that didn’t because they make for better stories. Personally though, I won’t loose anything if it fails, I’m not a backer, but I have a friend who is and he’s told me he has high hopes for the game as of late. I don’t see this project as having many of the more obvious telltale signs of inevitable crowdfunding failure (which don’t include delays, BTW, that’s just how all campaigns go), but as always it could go either way.

it's probably similar to a phenomenon in the mobile game industry wherein certain players are calledwhales, it's startling how much money mobile games make off of just a few dozens of people who account for almost all of the profits from microtransactions. For the exact opposite of this effect you can look at warframe. It's a free to play PC game with microtransactions, and one of the things they introduced was a means to purchase a skin for your pets where the appearance would be randomized on each purchase. Someone used the transaction more than 200 times and the devs at that point ripped the feature out of the game completely, because they hated how they had essentially created a slot machine unintentionally.

the general trend with these kickstarter MMOs has been 1) visionary person, often some canonized saint of a particular genre, has idea that appeals to nostalgia, 2) visionary person assumes too much authority, 3) visionary person keeps saddling (usually inexperienced) team with increasingly absurd demands to drive up interest in the project, 4) the team, paralyzed by anxiety, mounting cynicism and lack of direction, is able to accomplish little; most of them are painfully aware it will fail and just want to hold onto their jobs (and their dignity) for as along as possible. It feels like they're always taking the process one day at a time, stringing an increasingly dwindling donor pool along, trying not to acknowledge that they'll bottom out eventually
@equidistanthoneyjoy76003 жыл бұрын
Bottom out eventually, yes, but honestly this looks like a pretty secure career. I checked just now, and they're making 10's of thousands of dollars an hour. If they pay their employees a fair wage of something like 25 an hour, then even on the low end of that scale they can easily pay several hundred employees. Most projects like this aren't being pumped with more and more money, but the amount they're currently making is truly obscene. Since a current 7 year delay hasn't scared too many people off, I don't think that gravy train is stopping any time soon. Honestly, barring a major recession, those people are probably very secure in their jobs for at least another 5 or 6 years and maybe even more.

@@shepardpolska NMS definitely needed more time to be realized to be the vision it wanted to be and advertised itself as we see now with the contiuously releasing updates moving it toward that vision, but the publisher didnt give them that time. So whats the difference between Star Citizen and NMS? Theoretically, NMS could have also went the kickstarter route instead of a publisher and iteratively added content to their game while players could play it in an alpha. They are actually not that different. I understand and agree the argument that Star Citizen still has very limited gameplay loops compared to other games in that genre. But that has a reason: CIG did not prioritize gameplay since 2015 because they are waiting for underlying software systems to be completed. That included Object Containers, Server and Client Side Object Container Streaming, now Static and soon Dynamic Server Meshing with Item Cache, Persistence and Physicalized Items and Inventories. Most of the gameplay loops in SC utilize these systems, If CIG would have released gameplay loops already then they had to touch each and every one whenever a new foundation software system comes online, using up valuable time and resources that could be spend elsewhere, e.g. SQ42 which e.g. does not require Static and Dynamic Server Meshing.

@@GomulDart I think we all want, is to be sold games and not an idea of a game. People sell ideas through stocks and investors, yet these days they instead offer you 'digital goods' as benefits. Which no US court recognizes as having real world value (which is why Loot boxes can't fall under gambling law just yet). This man hoodwinked millions of people into buying into his idea, and because he didn't do so through the proper channels, consumers have zero recourse against him or his company. Unlike investors, we don't get to demand proof of their work, and get no say in what he or his company does. Thus, it's a scam. Believe it or not, pyramid schemes *have* resulted in people that bought into the idea getting rich. This doesn't mean it's not a scam. The means is JUST as important as the Finish of the product.

The facts of the matter is star citizen does not qualify as a scam in any meaningful way. There is a product there. Even if development is slow, they are transparent and consistent. They are very clear that their development is slow. They aren't misleading anyone, no ones money is being stolen. Biggest mistake here is so rudimentary that my father taught it to me before i entered any form of education. "Always promise less and give more" This single sentence of knowledge is almost enough to get you anything you want. An example from life is my music career. I cannot begin to count the amount of times i have used this to my benefit. From blowing peoples minds at a party or getting to play my own shows. When someone asks me if i can play I always respond "A lil" and set their expectations low then i proceed to give them the best possible preformance I can far exceeding their expectations. I said that " it is almost enough to get you anything you want" although there are two major things you have to do alongside it. The first being you have to put in the work to far exceed a persons low expectations multiple times over. The second and most important part is that you have to stay true to yourself. while that might seem contradictory to the whole thing being that you intentionally set expectations low it does not matter if you far over preform their expectations and are brutally true to yourself after the slight deception.

When you bought a game you bought the game, for good and for ill. Yeah there was tons of shovel ware. Yeah the console wars skewed people's perspectives and some series drifted into franchise zombie territory (looking at you Mega Man.) It wasn't perfect by a long shot but one would have expected that either industry as whole would learn from its mistakes or players would get more savvy about what they pick up and play. Nope. The industry itself has bloated into a money sucking machine that can, and will, milk every last dollar from its consumers with as little return as possible. Consul games push planned obsolescence in their hardware and control gimmicks as they release either half baked one and done pre-owned bin fodder or installment 483 of a series that hasn't done anything really new since Clinton was in office and in some cases weren't really that good in first place (looking at you Sonic.) On the PC side pre-order bonuses, DLC, and in game monetization bleed players for cash while delivering half finished games you need to wait at least month to play so they can release patches, all the while justifying the micro transactions needed to progress in the games they themselves made grindtastic in the first place or insisting the costs are needed for programmers and developers who they routinely shaft. The indie scene fairs a little better but is glutted with shovelware and has far too many kickstarter backed fiascos than should be rationally allowed. Mighty #9 springs to mind. We Happy Few is probably the most recent example. And all the while the gamers themselves throw scads of cash at all of them to keep up with the latest releases, hoovering up only different in the name versions of FPSes and multiplayer match games, sucking down nostalgic franchise installments regardless of quality (looking at you again Sonic), throwing rage fits at critics who don't give glowing reviews of their title of choice while gleefully and willfully wetting themselves at pre-rendered trailers and smoke and mirror shows at the conventions. Yeah, Sturgeon's Law does apply. 90% of everything is crap and some things don't get their due in their day. And yes, there have indeed been some solid titles released that deserved the accolades and profitability they received. But to put it bluntly, the hooker doesn't actually like you. She doesn't care how much you compliment or praise her. She doesn't care how long you've been coming to her or how much she means to you or even if you like what she does or not. She just wants you to give her money. So long as you do that she'll smile and shake her goods at you and give you a wink and maybe a pat on the head. It's not her fault your bank account is empty, your due in court for solicitation charges, your wife is leaving you, and your balls now itch. Now replace hooker for games industry and that's pretty much where the gaming community is right now. And the yet they keep going back to the hooker like this time things will go differently.

@@steampunker7 I'd say it's not so much the "game community" doing it to themselves rather than a bunch of casual people who started getting into games and it resulting in this. I mean, gaming used to be a nerd thing, but now you'd be hard pressed to find any guy who doesn't own a console. I doubt any serious person who's been gaming for a long time now, actually wants micro transactions in their games. Companies are just appealing to the masses with disposable income, which I can't really blame them for considering it's been working so well. Also I'm not sure what indie games you're looking at to consider them shovelware. And kickstarter fiascos aren't very common to my knowledge

No Mans Sky is decent now, it actually makes star citizen look sad and funny when you see how far hello games has been willing to go to fix their game and satisfy their customers. NMS even makes Elite Dangerous look a little anemic with their trickle of minor content updates.

Yeah that quote doesn’t really age well in an age where you can release a game and as long as it’s updated and working well eventually people will still praise it. Hell with games like NMS I feel like they actually got more praise for sticking with it than they would have if they just released it working right off the bat

ThatLycanTomboy it’s also insane how many people still defend it.....even after Forbes magazine exposed that the executive producer quit in protest 4-5 years ago after Roberts used millions of the crowd funding for SC, to buy himself a mansion in Pacific palisades California. Roberts wife took over the position, and now only god knows how much of the funding was misappropriated in the last 4 years.

I don't see this as a scam. I see it as a well meaning yet narcissistic game dev, who has no business acumen or leadership skills, refusing to compromise on anything. I've seen it again and again and again in this industry, and it's bankrupted too many small studios to mention. Sooner or later, you've gotta know when to step back and call it done.

It's a total scam. 187 million dollars. Where the hell did it all go? Who spent that money and on on what because it certainly wasn't spent on making that game. I've seen their presentations at events like E3 and videos how they make it look like there's more going on than actually is. They're thieves and liars selling a digital picture of a ship (that's not even in the damn game) that people will never get.

Scam. Their refund policy is ass backwards, they're begging for enough money to buy a car with to support their game which has been delayed about 100 times already, and they sic their rabid fanbase on anyone they dont like.

Sigh. This sounds so sadly similar to Double Fine's crowdfunding to Broken Age. Seems to be a problem having its source at creative types running wild with ambition and not enough managerial elements keepings things to some kind of plan. Also, wow, Derek Smart. He is quite a character. Among other things from what I've seen, he easily blames critics of his work of racism (he is black), and claims to possess a doctorate but nobody has found any evidence of the existence of his doctoral thesis. He has consistently refused to provide even basic information about it, such as at which university he completed it or who was his supervisor.
@Omnicrom7 жыл бұрын
The short of it is that Broken Age had issues with cashflow and development time. The Kickstarter was in 2012 for a 2014 release, but in 2013 it came out that Doublefine's design trajectory was they that they wouldn't be able to finish before 2015 and by then they would have run through their kickstarter money. As a result they outsourced a chunk of development (Art and Animation mostly) to a different studio (Supergenius), and then split the game in half with the goal of releasing the first half and then using sales of it to fund the second half. It was honestly a gamble, if the first part of Broken Age hadn't been a success there's a chance there wouldn't have been a second part. That was mostly what I remember people being up in arms about, they had backed a game and then Doublefine rolled the dice on releasing only half of it. In hindsight Broken Age was a success that gave the people what they wanted for their money, but if it had gone another way it would be another cautionary tale of a beloved developer brought ala Mighty No. 9, and nobody wanted that.

*(star citizen seems very different from any other crowd funding game, I believe they truely are well in over their heads but that they will pull through. it looks and sounds fucking amazing)* if this is any consolation, i myself am working on a game and plan to crowd fund it... however i plan to actually have a working prototype akin to PUBg but without the bugs and incompleteness. the way i see, the money should be used to advance the game by hiring a team to fully flush it out, not just to make the damn thing "playable".... i wish more people cared about honor/pride and the like instead of rushing something to make a living. it's all well and good to feel the need to profit off your skills but i've always been one to put work before money. i just don't understand a situation like this: *at a highschool reunion* "what do you do for a living?" --- "well i made a game and then released it before it was finished and make a fuck ton of money of it, now im retired" ---- "oh cool what's it called?" ---- "no man's sky" maybe it's cause i was and am a musician/artist first and foremost so i don't see the point of trying to sell a half-ass piece of shit that could of been so much more. imagine if tolkien treated lotr as such...

All of the questions that you have asked in this video are still unanswered. And even now, 5 years later, more questions have arisen. Why no government legal agency (i.e. California Attorney General) is not involved in the companies affairs by this point amazes me. Somehow, this company is escaping the forensic scrutiny that it deserves.
