, I agree with you. You can practically see the influence the Borg and the Dominion had on them. I don’t think that’s the case with all their ships and not all aliens might be too weak to oppose them, considering Voyager had to drudge through sectors with aliens that had several times their own firepower. That and until the Dominion War, Starfleet had a habit of reusing century old ships to supplement their fleet. All in all, power is relative and compared to the other major powers, they were behind by a huge margin. Starfleet is not only just some exploratory organization, they’re literally all the the Federation has for a navy and its about time they realized it, which they did as shown in the video.

Mini Nubs when the entire federation is at risk they can no longer afford to play nice. The Enterprise E for instance has 16 mark 12 phaser. Those were previpusly only fitted on space stations because of power requirements. They took multiple attempts at designing a warp core that was powerful enough to run it and even then its debated whether its warp speed is limited to warp 8 because of this. It has ablative armour and a dedicated quantum torpedo launcher. It was only outmatched by the scimitar which from what im aware was build by the slave remans for the romulans as a super ship before it was stolen by the remans. It was likely extremely expensive to make however and could probobly only power itself because of the theyleron power supply which was likely rediculously hard to get.

Well now we will, with the new *Picard series* set after the destruction of Romulus. J. J's plot device is now _canon on that happening in the prime universe,_ but at least the rest of his stuff is in a separate timeline [unlike the new Star Wars trilogy…]. With Patrick Stewart involved hopefully it'll be good (he would be concerned about the fans) and the destruction of Romulus is a interesting plot idea as it throws the entire Alpha quadrant balance on its head. My wish is for it to completely ignore _Star Trek Online,_ including its ship designs that are mostly derivative, jazzed up versions of old ships. Instead use the new *paradigm* of blended nacelles into primary hulls, internal bridges, and basically tougher more pragmatic ships that the Defiant spearheaded. And have as a major plot point Starfleet getting the right to use cloaking technology (Admiral Pressman was right…Pegasus) and shenanigans by *Section 31.* Starfleet Cloaking could finally shut up the Wookie fundamentalists in versus match ups.
@fleetadmiraldiaz35885 жыл бұрын
STO is the epitome of fanservice while also expertly tying up all sorts of loose ends from every era of Trek. The only reason it is likely to be ignored is because CBS likes keeping their licensed works distinct from what's currently airing or may air in the future. Even the Discovery crap they just had to slap on there goes into background or ancilliary material rather than outright blending it into the ongoing episode structure. That being said, the material apart from Discovery has mostly been excellent, especially "Victory is Life" as a continuation of the DS9 story. As to ship designs simply being "jazzed up" or derivative, that's quite a load of bull. The sheer diversity of ship designs and variants is staggering. Naturally they are going to be reminiscent of older vessels, or they would hardly be recognizable. Picard looks as if it's going to be a Firefly/Renegades knockoff where its title character is relegated to backseat driving a crew of scrappy young rogues on some mission that centers around yet another "bestest most important chick EVAR" type character. If it turns out not to be, then I'll be happy to be proven wrong. But given the so-called entertainment industry's obsession with this sort of dynamic, I don't think I am.

The real problem is that Star Trek has _so much_ lore that the Borg shouldn't be even a minor threat. We see all kinds of wildly powerful potential allies, for example, ranging from the Excalbians to the Organians, any of whom could stop the Borg in their tracks if asked nicely by the Federation. Likewise, you've got technologies like isolytic subspace weapons, Wesley's sentient nanites, Kelvan field projector belts, Mirror-Kirk's Tantalus Device, and many, many more. Hell, you could just have nanites turn a whole solar system into billions of starships with Von Neumann machines and "crew" them all with M5 units. And that's just scratching the surface.

"Hey guys, we're giong to design 95% of our ships to cantilever our engines out away from the hull and call it a combat ship!"
@achtsekundenfurz78764 жыл бұрын
Semi-agreed. There was some lore that the engines have to be separated from most of the ship mass, at least for heavy ships - Defiant and smaller can pretty much ignore the penalty, but anything bigger is affected badly. But that's no excuse to use only one pylon per warp engine. A ship with one pylon connecting to the forward end and one to the rear would be much more durable and look the part, too. The Romulan Warbird design, with an upper and a lower connecting structure, does it MUCH better than any cruiser-sized or bigger Starfleet design. The _Norway_ class gets the worst of both worlds. The pylons themselves are pretty strong, but that doesn't improve anything because the roots, where they connect to the main hull are ridiculously thin, AND the warp plasma conduits (from warp core to engines) are unnecessarily long.

If the Sovereign has that many torpedo tubes, why in the hell does it always display such a pitiful rate of fire? If memory serves, those lauchers could fire a 12 shot spread, each. Now obviously you aren't going to vomit out 120 Quantum Torpedoes every time you pull the trigger, but when you are up against a Borg Cube or something like the Scimitar, you are going to throw as much damage is humanly possible against it before they managed to adapt or get shields back or whatever. That is one thing that always bugged me. Yes, the Federation is about diplomatic solutions, but they build ships that can depopulate entire worlds with minimal effort and yet when they really go to war, they are still taking potshots like they are feeling them out.
@Low_commotion7 жыл бұрын
You know, given how the Borg adapt to weapons, the best option seems to be that you _should_ just dump an overkill-amount of ordinance at a Cube right off the bat (maybe in the middle of their spiel about resistance). Can't adapt if the first salvo annihilates you. Not cost effective, but I would assume if Borg have showed up in Federation space resource efficiency isn't much of a concern.
@seraphina9857 жыл бұрын
+sole21000 Well considering that it's either kill the damn cube or donate your vessel and all it's materiel and it's crew as soldiers for the enemy then yeah don't really think cost efficiency should be a concern anymore. The same principle was explored in the Honor Harrington book series by David Weber. Initially ships of the wall (the largest and strongest) were mostly close quarters brawlers using beam weapons. As the series grew and technology became more and more miniaturized missiles became more and more relevant. Towards the end of the series, the ships were redesigned to carry pods of missiles, giant salvos of thousands of missiles would be fired in order to overwhelm point defense and electronic warfare. It was argued that the loss of the missile material, due to the inefficiency of the strategy, was much better than losing entire ships which cost magnitudes higher, as well as the cost of life, particularly experienced crews. A shotgun style starfleet ship could totally work, and possibly be devastating.

"Hey, let's build our fleet of ships that are supposed to go up against an adaptive enemy by having them all have the same type of weapon." It's a miracle Starfleet survived as long as they did against anything with that type of inflexibility in weapon loadouts. Why not mix it up with Lasers, Phasers, Plasma, Kinetic Weapons, Nuclear/Anitmatter Missiles, and a bunch of other stuff?
@toomanyaccounts7 жыл бұрын
you mean stuff the borg would already have defenses against just like federation ships have defenses against? lasers wouldn't even pierce a fed ship hull. kinetic weapons would bounce off standard shields.
@lordteapot97407 жыл бұрын
it's been shown that borg adaption doesn't apply to kinetic weapons in both canon and the novels.
@toomanyaccounts7 жыл бұрын
those were short not prolonged engagements with cultures that would have been using them. all the borg would have to do is modify their deflector shields to not allow projectiles to pass through.
@badbeardbill99566 жыл бұрын
The Borg literally cut a slice through the Enterprise with a laser during first contact, bypassing shields... I'd say the best option is to build asteroids warships. Just mount as many guns, lasers, phasers, or whatever to it and put the largest reactor you can in it, maybe actually quite a few of them, and wait for the Borg to come to you. Either that or just launch asteroids at them.
@giusepped39346 жыл бұрын
The main reason is because, of all the things you named, lasers, plasma, nuclear, kynetic and antimatter weapons are things of the past. They are quite less effective than phasers and torpedoes used by that time. In one episode of TNG they meet another civilization, armed with lasers and nuclear weapons, and feel quite strange about it; the exact reaction is a sentence like "They wouldn't even get past the navigational deflector". Which is the shield that protects a starship against high-speed impact with interstellar small object, too small to be detected by sensors. At high speed they can be fearsome projectile, like it has been stated numerous times by real life astronauts of modern era. If something can be avoided just using the navigational deflector of a Galaxy-class ship, i seriously doubt it could damage a Borg cube.

The Intrepid class should have been mentioned here. That class was the forefront in creating an advanced combat/science capable ship in a smaller package, able to complete research missions and combat missions. It was basically a more advanced galaxy class on a smaller package, with basically the same abilities.

@trevorperry30817 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. It should have been fairly easy for them to mount these in turrets if directional fire was an issue. Something I'm a bit more annoyed with is the lack of purpose built carriers, and a lack of proper fleet formations designed with mutual support in mind with specialised roles... seriously, did humanity just flush all military knowledge down the drain after they met the vulcans?
@seraphina9857 жыл бұрын
+Trevor Perry Indeed though the same could be said for some of the warlike races that keep showing up with single ships or on the odd times they send a group they are regularly homogeneous fleets of the same basic ship. Though that said being able to play fast and loose with the laws of physics does allow you to break some of the causes of why that's necessary like the fact that being big and heavy in real life is helpful for accommodating the sort of weaponry which is extremely effective at dealing out the hurt but makes you considerably less manoeuvrable due to your massive inertia which is not so good against a swarm of smaller vessels unless you have escort ships to keep them busy while your capital ships get a firing solution on them.

So most of these anti-borg ships are designed with the concept of MORE DAKKA in mind to destroy the borg quickly enough before they have time to adapt?
@ptonpc7 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly.. Yep. Steamrunners were supposed to stay back and basically rain hot photon or quantum torpedo death on the Borg cube while the other ships were designed to get closer and hit specific nodes if possible, otherwise, just blast the cr*p out of everything they see.
@Sorain15 жыл бұрын
Well, the Borg had shown a preference for singular huge vessels with limited offensive targeting. (However devastating on the target.) Since even the most advanced shielding was of limited use against the Borg, the idea of swarming an enemy with eggshells carrying sledgehammers appealed to them.

Type-12 Phasers ? Didn't know they even existed. I'd thought even Type-10's were for mostly Starbases.
@watcherzero52564 жыл бұрын
Type 10's are the omnidirectional phaser strips that you see most TNG era ships have like the Galaxy and Intrepid classes. Type 12 (also called 10+) are essentially the same weapon but with a higher output, they were indeed originally on starbases but also now feature on more modern ships like the Sovereign, Prometheus and Akira classes.

The 3 in 1 trick is meant for hitting a target from "multi vectors" to exploit any weakening parts of their shields or defenses. Its actually pretty unclear if shields draw directly from the ships total power supply or if they need to be charged. If they draw directly from the total power output then I guess the shields are given only a certain partition of the available power to not accidentally hinder other systems. Hence the whole auxiliary, secondary, and emergency power designations. The drain of the shield partition would leave some parts of the shield bubble weaker than others since they come from multiple emitters. Perhaps a few seconds to divert power from one section to another is too long to keep the strongest part of the shields facing the attacker.
@viralshadow7 жыл бұрын
The Prometheus was built for the Dominion War, not the Borg. And if I remember my Trek, it was never mass produced on a large scale.

I always wonder why they design ships with 9-12 phaser arrays almost always only 2 torpedo tubes...4 at most. Are phasers so much better? They always seemed like pretty useless to me.
@thefirstprimariscatosicari68707 жыл бұрын
mafbloggerdanny They do not have 2 or 4 torpedo tubes, they have 2 or 4 torpedo bays with 5 torpedo tubes each. They have more phasers moslty because they are a direct weapon (meanwhile torpedos can engage without direct conctat) and because phasers are a multi-role weapon, capable of performing both as a main weapon or as point defense, meanwhile torpedos are just torpedos.
@hotdogs10267 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it’s only because torpedoes come in a limited supply. The phaser banks are charged directly from the warp core.
@briananthony40446 жыл бұрын
The tubes on the Galaxy class hold 10 torps that can be fired as a salvo from each tube. The Sovereign had a rapid fire tube under the primary hull, as well as a number of fixed tubes, that can fire 5 torpedoes per second and can rotate to fire to the sides. One tube does not mean only one torpedo ready for firing.

The Norway class appears to be a shoe tree with warp nacelles. But at least it's bridge is not identafiably surface-mounted and shaped like a "shoot me here to see the really BIG explosion" target, as most other Starfleet bridges seem to be.

Right but that was one ship, rather than intrinsic to the ship _class._ Now, if all existing Intrepid-class ships were retrofitted with Voyager's scavenged & invented armaments, then yes it'd be a warship class.

Yes, but Voyager was the only Intrepid to receive those upgrades so Voyager and only Voyager could still be considered an "anti-borg" ship.
