LOL to O'Brien stating he's tired of being the bad guy. He's played a good amount of heavies in his career and is great at it.

“A Simple Investigation” was originally conceptualized while Odo was humanoid, and the writers had wanted him to experience sex as a solid, but he had gotten his shapeshifting back by the time they got around to making this episode. The end result, as we see, is that they basically had Odo make humanoid love while still being a Changeling but also threw in some Changeling morphing for good measure.
@davewolf6256Ай бұрын
Well this was the first episode to introduce the plot point that the Great Link is, from the perspective of the Changelings, sex. And it’s hard to say whether it would have been introduced if the script were shot under other circumstances. It’s another example of how the writing staff tends to pivot really well when the series arc changes unexpectedly. 3x26 The Adversary is another example of how well the writers have done so.

I thought it was interesting that Alexander Siddig is still using Siddig El Fadil for his directing credit. According to IMDb this and another DS9 episode is the full extent of his directing career. In case anyone was wondering his full name is Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi.

I feel in this show, most of the main characters who have a character arc are about struggling to become a perfect member of their society. Kira wants to help rebuild a peaceful Bajor, but all she's known her whole life was to kill and blow stuff up. Worf, Odo, and Garak have a deep love for their people, but can not support the actions of their leaders. And then there is Quark, who wishes above all else wishes to be a nasty Ferengi businessman, but fails because he's just too good.

12:07 Crystals are a very highly ordered arrangement of molecules. And Odo's species seeks out order. Shapeshifting into a crystal is probably pleasurable.

Cousin Gaila has been mentioned a few times before, btw. When Quark and Odo were trapped in the security office in 3x07 "Civil Defense", Odo complimented Quark on being so devious but then later admitted that Gaila and others are more devious than Quark. In 4x08 "Little Green Men" Gaila is the one who gifted Quark the ship that accidentally transported them to 1947 Roswell, New Mexico.

Lawrence Tierney the guy who plays the regent is also the same actor who played Cyrus Redblock in TNG episode The Big Goodbye
@BEBrunsАй бұрын
He’s probably best known to modern audiences for Reservoir Dogs where one character describes him as looking like The Thing from the Fantastic Four.
@jerodastАй бұрын
It still makes me laugh that Tierney, who by all accounts was a very tough, genuinely intimidating man who can be difficult to work with, was happy to sit in a chair and go through the Star Trek alien makeup process for this episode. I mean I know he was a professional actor, but it somehow just seems like he wouldn't have the patience for it...maybe I'm thinking too much of his legendary appearance on Seinfeld where he didn't seem to have the patience for ANYTHING haha.

Two great episodes! The woman Odo falls for in A Simple Investigation is SOO lovely. Her voice is hypnotic. The two killers are GREAT- like Cohen Brothers characters put into Star Trek! They had real character and were memorable. Business As Usual shows us Quark's cousin Gala after his name was dropped a bunch of times. It also shows that Quark is anything but a typical Ferengi. Both he and his brother and mother have that arrest of qualities- morals. It's also interesting to see some slimy human types- certainly it's not just the aliens in Trek that are creeps. Great to see Odo get some romance- and for Kira to notice!
@jerodastАй бұрын
I was a little surprised most of the two killers scenes didn't make the edit here, they were probably more memorable than the woman for me, although that wasn't bad either.

Steven Berkoff. He’s English but his grandparents were from Russia and Romania. Altogether it gives him a vague ethnicity, handy for an actor. Yeah I can definitely get the Rutger vibe from him. Hagath: yeah, he played him very well. You could never tell what he was up to. Joking with Quark about the food was hilarious. Definitely a well acted ep and the guests were written very well.

15:20 Yes absolutely, it can take the shape he wants... and more with shapeshifting fusion. He can pretty much give a girl an orgasm while not being solid at all... Sisko's reaction is priceless. At least we now know that Odo's taste in women is impeccable. Rules 35 and 36 and I'm mixing them up all the time: "War is good for Business" and "Peace is good for Business". Oh you mean that guy looks like Baron Vladimir Harkonnen? I was about to say the same. Better be in debt towards the Federation than towards the Orion Syndicate or any other scumbag mafia...

Quark once again showed he has a heart beneath all that greed. Its like what he said to Garak that one time before he gave the rootbeer analogy: selling weapons is such an impersonal business. Also its completely scummy because there is a good bet Quark's cousin (who you will see again, spoiler alert) and his business partner were selling weapons to both sides and profiting off the wreck of who knows how many lives. Money may not know where it comes from, but in the end you do and you have to live with that knowledge.
@cashflowhustlesАй бұрын
Quark is slimy and greedy but he's NOT EVIL! They made sure to HUMANIZE Quark and most Ferengis in general although some of them are completely evil.
@silikon2Ай бұрын
It’s interesting Bajor forced the station to allow the weapons dealing. It absolutely made sense and would be hypocritical not to. I also don’t think The Sisko could hassle Quark the way he said he planned to, but the speech was great. Certainly I buy everyone giving him the cold shoulder though… except maybe Kira… I’m way less certain of that and think she’s really just going along with everyone else, and particularly The Sisko.
